Friend makes cue offer...

most gambling pool players that I know are not that great at managing their money.

Someone posted this in a thread recently and called it something like " serious bankroll management issues "

When I used to hang out at the pool room a lot, guys would come up to me all the time to sell a nice cue for not too much for some seed money or when they were broke. Then, when they scored a big win, they would come buy them a real nice cue from me...of course, they would sell it back a little later for a lot less for some seed money.....vicious circle of the gambler...

This happens all the time. I have bought cues and case's from people under the stipulation that they wanted to get them back in a certain length of time. Basically they were pawning them but were getting more than they would at a real pawn shop. Sometimes they get them back and sometimes they dont and one thing I have learned from this is that it is best not to do it with good friends, just like renting a house or apt to a close friend (I could tell some horror stories about that). This doesnt happen all the time but more often than not the situation turns sour after a short while because people take advantage of a little more freedom with dealing with someone they know.

I have gotten lots of good deals on cues just like many others and numerous times I have paid the sellers asking price or very close to it. If someone is selling something because they are needing money and offer it under priced there is nothing worng with buying it, for a few reason's. They could have asked more because there is a good chance they knew what they had. You have no way of knowing how long you will have the item before you can move it. If it's from someone you have never met you may have no idea if it's stolen or legitment. When a pool player goes busted or someone is in need of money and sells a cue or case for way less than its worth to make some quick cash, it sometime's starts a chain of events. If I buy something for a very reasonable amount I will pass that deal on to someone else and try and make a quick profit and let the next person do the same, instead of holding out and trying to get top dollar. I have bought cues and sold them to friends for the same thing I paid for them but I have also had friends expect to pay the same thing if they wanted something. Very seldom do the pawn shop Szamboti's come along or someone walks up and says you want to buy this Tascarella for $500. I think people look at someone making a few dollars on certain deals as taking advantage of others....sometimes it happen's and sometime's it doesnt and lots of the time both parties are happy.

I have a friend that came up to me and says,"HEY would you be interested in this cue for $500?" Frankly I would have been interested in the cue for a few times that cost, so I say, "YEP, Ill take it.", I pull out the cash and pay for the cue.

It is from a top maker, four points, four veneers in each point, (2) full 13mm shafts. All straight, but in dire need of refinishing, tips and removal of an awful leather wrap. (Rode hard and put away wet, LOL).

Today, it got sent away for a complete refinishing. Sure makes me scratch my head sometimes.... Ill post pictures when complete.

Does this just happen to me?

It happens to me all the time, people bring all kinds of cues into my pool room and try to sell them. Most are junk, but there are also those Diamonds in the ruff, but in many cases I just pass unless I know the person. To many thieves out there these days, and it just isn't worth the chance of taking stolen property to me.

I'm starting to understand you and Lou's conversations better now, you are living in a distorted world of your own.

I am not going to rehash something from another thread. Like I said if you find your self on the balloon committee don't hesitate to ask as I am generally up for donating to worthy causes.

I understood exactly what I was in for in for if I confronted you and it almost made me not want to make another reply in this thread. But If I give in to that then I lose some dignity. So I will weather the storm that is likely to come and if I get lucky and it doesn't then that's great.

Lastly, you're right, my world is not your world. I don't think that you have much if any idea what my world is really like - my world seems to be in line with a lot of other people's experiences though so apparently I am not completely alone in it. Your descriptions on this forum of coming into my world seem rather academically detached rather than personally lived but perhaps this is just how you write. It's that old saying "on the internet nobody knows you're a dog". No matter though sometimes you make great points so one doesn't need names and dates or verification if the point is understood.

I would call most of the guys from the pool room "Buddy" I try not to use the word "Friend" unless I truly meant it.
If someone offered me a cue for well under market value and they were no particular "Buddy" or "Friend of mine I would just pay them and take the cue.

If a "Buddy" of mine from the pool room offered me up a cue for well under market value because he/she was busted I would first let them know what I thought the value of the cue was & that if they took some time to sell it properly they could do better.
Then offer the following choises:
A. Offer to loan them the money against the cue for 30 days.
B. Pay their asking price & own the cue outright

If a "FRIEND" needed the money I would give/loan it to them with out hesitation.

Any time you want your money back all you have to do is ask and send me a mailing address. The same goes for anyone else that made a donation and now regrets it or feels like harping on it. As for my writing, like my behavior in pool rooms it reflects the way I live. I have long met people half way or further and have taken more would be hustlers and serious gamblers than I can begin to remember. For years I took a special pleasure in flat busting them if I could. I didn't use cheap hustles to shear sheep. I hate mutton and it's a lot more fun to prey on predators anyway.

You are certainly the epitome of polite so I agree with you that perhaps this shouldn't continue. After all it's incredibly polite to essentially call a man a thief because he was the recipient of some good fortune in the pool room. I am sure that Ken regrets his purchase and is on the way to pay more for the cue right now due to your admonition.

And you're probably right, it's possible that I heeded your general call to donate to the flower fund and you didn't specifically solicit me. Still the offer stands to assist you any time you need it for such a good and noble cause.

Rick Howard is doing the refinishing. I assumed that I might need a shaft and had called Rick before checking the shafts. The shafts were arrow straight.

I have had Rick supply shafts for various cues he has refinished for me. Rick, IMO, has the best shaftwood that he keeps back for requested high quality shafts (his good is great, and this wood is even better). I pay a small premium for the wood and its is unbelivable.

Only problem I have had with Rick is he normally doesnt stock my preference on tips (Moori soft). He can get them but usually takes a few days.

He wanted to know who the maker of the cue was, once I told him, he said he thought they were great cues from a great cuemaker. Its nice when a cuemaker obviously respects another makers work.

Just to make sure no one is questioning how Ken treats a friend, I thought Id post. I have given Ken some good deals on billiard items before. I needed cash, no longer felt I wanted or needed the item, and new it would be a quick and smooth transaction with Ken. We were both happy.

But Ill also say this. There are few people I know that if I were really in a pinch I would ask to loan me money. Ken is one of them, and there is no doubt he would do anything he could to help me or anyone else that he truely considers to be one of his friends.

Ken understands what it means to be a friend just fine.

And if I know Ken the way I think I do, Im sure he picked up a really nice Meucci

I had a guy offer me his Tim Scruggs sneaky pete for $50 about 8 years ago. I thought about, so he threw in the leather case too. Deals come and go. Because tough times come and go in our lives. Right now I get as many people wanting to sell their cues as I get wanting to BUY new cues. Runs in cylcles for all of us.
