depends on the construction predator u need help. regular i just cut them off carefully. i have seen guys burn them with a torch then unscrew then with pliers when the glue heats up. ive done it this way too but it stinks. obv be careful too not burn the shaftwood. as far as an install u need a repair man with a lathe.

If you have the necessary tools, i'm sure you can do it by following some instructions given here. But as a cuemaker, my best advice is to bring it to your nearest repairman or cuemaker. And as what above said, it will be good if you will see it personally on how it was done, for you to have a complete idea..
With the proper equipment you could do it youself but as a cuemaker and repairman I would suggest you take it to your local man to have it done, being you haven't done one before.
instead of a torch tell them to just use a thick piece of leather it will heat up just as good and wont have the chance of catching on fire lol

Chuck, you left out the part about burning your fingers. The first and last time I did that, I made beef jerky out of the piece of leather. come to remember, a couple of my fingers almost got Kentucky Fried too.

Randy left out a couple of points. He shoots with a predator shaft and wanted to take about 3/4 of an inch off the shaft that came with the cue so it would be the same length. The ferrule is ivory on the shaft that he want taken down. If I cut off just below the ferrule and put on another tenon it will probably be a little shorter than the predator. A lot of work for 3/4 or an inch, but it can be done, and no guarantee that the ivory ferrule will survive. Oh by the way you shot great on monday night!

There may be a way to save the ivory ferrule that doesn't involve heat, or re-tenoning.
Assuming that the current ferrule is 1" long, chuck-up the shaft.
You want to remove 3/4" length from the shaft anyway so do that while the ferrule is still attached by boring that 3/4" amount of tenon out of the ferrule.
This leaves just 1/4" of tenon now holding the ferrule. Do you feel lucky?
The ferrule may break loose from the 1/4" tenon that is holding it.
Worst case scenario, the ferrule breaks. So what? You now have the shaft to the proper length for a new install of a new ferrule.
Might be worth a shot and may save you the cost of a new ivory ferrule.
