Queen Jean FINALLY on Youtube...

I have no idea who said that. I didn't hear it. I think Loree Jon did win a Straight Pool event that Jean did not play in. That's about the only thing I can think of. Jean was far and away the number one women player during her career. She rarely lost more than one match in any calendar year. She may have lost a handful of matches in her entire career. I think Robin did beat her once, as did Ewa (in Chicago) and Lori Shampo in a 9-Ball tourney. That's about all I can remember.

Wow. That is sick. She just LOOKS worlds apart from any other female player. She literally looks like she is hunting. So glad this was posted.

:) WoW, Jean is like a female Earl :D

Is this the infamous match that ended up with Jean quitting?

Jean won the tournament, beating Ewa in the finals. That made sixteen in a row she had won. The WPBA fined her $200 for her "bad behavior" during the match, and she refused to pay on principle. She never played professional pool again.

The women had a good grasp on where their games were at in relation to the men. Eva commented on it during the early games in the set and Jean commented on it in the post match interview.

I still think that Jean should have apologized to Robin. I mean as Jean said she is expected to win so what kind of pressure is that for Robin Bell (now Dodson) just to be playing Jean Balukas and everyone expects you to lose?

Can any of us say we have never been sharked by this type of commentary by an opponent?

I can say, shamefully, that I have made these types of comments to and about my opponent and the conditions, and then gone on to win the match because my opponent started to dog it and I got some rolls. In those situations I felt like a real jerk.

Jean can play, no doubt about it. But she should have paid the fine and apologized to Robin for disrupting the game with the comments.

I really do respect Earl's game. But I absolutely hate his comments. I sat five feet away one US Open while he made racist comments about his Japanese opponent. Now of course Jean didn't do this but she had to have known that her comments were likely to shark Robin.

I don't know. I guess it goes both ways. On one hand a pro should be respectful of their opponent but on the other hand I guess a pro should be fairly sharkproof.

I'm just curious.
How can you tell it was due to bad racking?
Can you see spaces between balls or some other problem on the video?

When the 9 ball immediately moves towards a corner pocket, it is ONLY because the ball behind the 9 on that side was not frozen to it. In a properly racked rack of 9 ball, the 9 should not move at all unless kicked by another ball.

I wasn't there, but heard the story more than once from Robin. After seeing this, I have to say that her version of the story is 100% accurate. It's a shame that this caused Jean to step away from pool because she still may be the best female player the game has ever seen. However, she did act up, and it was more than just one "beat me with skill, not luck" comment. She also mocked Robin with the "some world champion" comment after Robin lucked a ball in. Some people think pool players should have thicker skin and just be able to deal with stuff like that, but why should they have to? Why should players be subjected to that kind of BS simply because they want to compete in a pool tournament?

The tour chose to fine her ($200, as the story goes), and they had every right to do so. I wish sportsmanship rules would be enforced more often because, sadly, they are not enforced nearly enough.

I thought I heard Jean say "some world championSHIP", which is not meant as a slight to Robin so much as the game itself...perhaps implying shoddy refereeing (with the racking...which was clearly bad).

Yeah I picked up on that too. The caption definitely said Jean was "#2 ranked".

I can understand your reasons. We all comment on the motives of others. But if I were truly objective, I would have to say (without knowing a thing about Balukas) Jean can only be who she is and I accept it. It is a part of her persona that drives her. Maybe, just maybe, if she weren't that way she wouldn't have had the competitive drive that made her great.

The referee was a young and dapper Gary "The Driller" Drennan from Oklahoma. They showed a very big Joe Kerr on the screen one time after he said something to Jean. But the funny thing was they listed his name as Gary Drennan. Gary is a little guy, about my size. He played in the men's division of the tourney.

Some of the people I noticed in the stands - Billy Incardona, Leonard Bludworth (sitting by Robin), New York Blackie (with the ball cap), Buddy, Sigel, Jimmy Mataya, Ernie (Ginacue), Peg Ledman and Barry Dubow.

Nothing Jeannie said was that bad, and it was over in seconds. I hear and see worse in every tournament I direct. I saw Jeannie as a fiery competitor here. Hey, she's from New York, what do you expect? "Eh, what's up with all the lucky rolls! You wanna double the bet!"

The overall quality of play wasn't bad, with good shooting by both players. Jeannie missed a nine ball when she was still steaming and Robin made a couple of mental blunders. By the way, Robin's nine balls on the break weren't all luck. She had her break working good.

Robin blundered a lot, and Miz brought em up too:):):)

Jean sharked Robin. Clearly Jean was frustrated but her comments were uncalled for. She should have paid the fine and moved on. Jean really reminded me of Strickland in this match.

There is no doubt that Robin was disturbed by Jean's outbursts.

Beyond that the irony is that Jean got some lucky rolls as well.

Jean plays good and thank you for this footage. I doubt Robin will chime in here but I for one feel that Robin was in the right. She should have been able to expect her opponent to sit quietly and not comment on Robin's play.

By "shark" do you mean intentional? Because I don't think it was intentional. It was an uncontrollable blurt.

This is the last of the footage on the old tape.

Sorry about the ending.....(or lack of)......I didn't make the tape.

Cheers - Dave.

RINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG! There goes the damn alarm clock!

Dave,

Thanks for uploading. I know I had this taped too, at one time, but it got fried in a fire.

Thanks again for taking the time to do this.

This has been a real treat, we are often seeing videos on here but this is like the Holy Grail of pool videos. There are a ton of Jean fans out there. Hope we get more stuff like this put up online. :)

Jean totally sharked Robin. She sounded like a cry baby from the chair. The "beat me with skill not luck" made me roll my eyes since Jean rolled her a few times as well. I dunno... not paying a $200 fine after you've won 16 in a row is cry-baby stuff as well.

I wish this wasn't the time I've seen Jean play. I'm SURE she's not that way all the time.

Hey, if nothing else, at least an internal question was answered for me based on what I saw. Allison is def the best woman player who ever lived.

I sat five feet away one US Open while he made racist comments about his Japanese opponent.

LOL.
HAD TO BE against Takeshi.
Worst i ever saw was when he played Okumura that year.
That was unreal.
Especially with all the idiot guys in the stands chiming in.

I should have recognized The Driller. I actually have kind of a funny story involving him and John Borba in like '92 or '93. We had taken off across the country to go to the Kentucky Derby and stopped at some pool rooms along the way, his pool room in Oklahoma City being one of them. It was pretty funny. We told the guy at the counter that we were looking for action and he said he'd call this guy named Gary, that everyone called The Driller, but warned us that, while we could win a little something if we beat him, we might have to fade a lot of crap. LOL! What an understatement. If I remember correctly, I think John quit winner because he couldn't fade it anymore, and offered to just let him keep the money. It was pretty brutal. lol.
