The Secret of Pool

Samm Diep just wrote an article for Pool Synergy, in which she claims that the "true secret to pool is humility." http://www.pooltipjar.com/2010/04/humility/ ;)

I'm with the other posters, in that pool has many secrets that will take a while for many of us to learn and master.

I was going to disagree with you (or Samm maybe) and say that humility was for the shortstops, but then I remembered how humble Efren was, so I'm retracting my thought and I'll spend the rest of the day bowing to my Efren shrine.

Years ago, non-players (usually thieves or outlaws of some sort) would sidle up to me and ask me how to get good at pool. They were mainly interested in wanting to rob their buddies. I would give them the bad news - There are no short cuts! There isn't anything I can whisper in your ear that will magically give you the ability to play good pool. It literally takes years of dedication. That was the end of that conversation.

The secret is - THERE IS NO SECRET!

ya either got it or you dont.

One day while playing you discover "the secret" or a huge secret in the game of pool. No one else knows it, you are sure. You cant find it anywhere. So what do you do with it? Do you publish it and let everyone spread it around for free? or Do you sell it one player at a time? What is the best way to sell it? Should you share it for the good of the sport? Should you copyright it and try to prevent its being reprinted in mass? If this is so good it makes pool less challenging, do you destroy it to preserve the game? What do you do with something so good?

The answers to these questions might prove interesting.

Ask stan shuffet. LOL! Just kidding i could'nt resist with all the recent aiming threads. No offense stan hell i may take a lesson or two someday in my opinion you can never know to much.

I've openly shared every "secret" of pool ... it's called VEPS.

Dave

Actually you are selling this information for a good amount. So your advice to the original poster is to make a DVD of his information and sell it?

Seems to work for most people.

Now if anyone can tell me the secret to getting major distribution in a fragmented marketplace I'd love to hear it.

> Everyone that reads what I'm about to post owes me 100 bucks, you can just mail it.

Concentration is not a skill that can be taught or improved on.

Concentration is a muscle, located in the middle of your forehead. Learn to tense this muscle without it causing your facial expression to change noticable and you will never miss another ball. Tommy D.

Actually concentration is a skill that can be learned and improved on. However if you concentrating on the wrong thing then you will still not reach your goal. What sense is there to be the fastest runner if you are going in the wrong direction?

If by "good," you mean "fair," then I agree.

If the OP has good information and is dedicated and committed to a DVD project (which takes a lot of time and effort to do right), then he or she should go for it.

That's easy ... put out a high quality product with useful information ... the smart distributors will pick it up, and word of mouth will spread.

Dave

That easy eh? Ok then. Can you do me a favor and get rid of those annoying four diamonds and the ta da sounds? That kind of drags down the otherwise professional content of your VEPS offering.

I like the way you slipped several ads into this thread. You are the best on AZ at guerrilla marketing for sure. I thought I was good but you have me beat by miles.

So instead of advising the original poster on what to do based on your experience, you advertised twice in his thread instead?

How dare you accuse me of advertising the Video Encyclopedia of Pool Shots (VEPS), the best resource ever created for pool players.

Shame on you. :grin-square: :sorry:

Tahdah!!! :p

my 2 cents, letting everybody know what the secret is, is no big deal. as this is only half of what it takes to be a great/greatest player. The other half is execution. I agree with everybody on the PRACTICE...

The secret to playing great pool is simple, you look at it through the eyes you did when you were young, no cares in the world, just get up there and play!

How true! Although I would offer also a slightly different version: The secret is to practice as if you were a child practicing (and allow yourself to learn like a child learns).

Dave,
When you came on this forum and started recording everyone else's thoughts, ideas etc., it became clear to me that you had in mind to sell this info. at some point and it has proved correct. I don't mean to be so critical because it doesn't bother me. What's fine for other people doesn't bother me. But I have a question. Can you list some of your original ideas, thoughts, etc. about the game that you haven't cloned from others.
Just checking.

I proudly admit that I've learned a lot from many books and videos (I've read, watched, and studied many), numerous magazine articles (I subscribe to and read every article in BD, P&B, and IP every month), many instructors I've had the privilege to work and communicate with (Jerry B, Randy G, Tom S, Tom R, Bob J, etc.), and from the thousands of threads I've read and participated in over the years.

However, I do feel I have contributed a lot to the pool world. Here are a few examples:
- 30-degree-rule and trisect-system peace-sign techniques.
- thorough understanding, explanation, and illustration of all squirt, swerve, and throw effects and principles (based on analysis, experiments, and video studies I've done).
- through understanding and illustration of pocket center and size effects
- thorough analysis and summary of all useful draw shot effects and principles
- almost 100 well-illustrated and thorough instructional articles for Billiards Digest over many years.
- innovative, full-color book (The Illustrated Principles of Pool and Billiards) with online video supplements published and posted in the pre-YouTube era.
- comprehensive Video Encyclopedia of Pool Shots (VEPS) series with Tom Ross, considered by many the best instructional video series ever created.
- a huge collection of free online high-speed-video super-slow-motion video clips that many people have referred to for many years.
- extremely useful and comprehensive collection of answers and resources (from me and others) for frequently-asked-questions (FAQs) in all pool topics.
- etc.!!!

I don't list these contributions to brag, but because I took offense at your post. I have worked extremely hard for the pool world and plan to continue to do so for a long time to come.

Just to be clear again: I have learned a lot of stuff from a lot of people. I'm sorry if that offends you (or "others"). :(

Regards,
Dave
