Hmm, interesting. Maybe I don't need the 2-and-out and all the breaks when we play. :grin-square:
Yep, you get the breaks.

Damm do I even know you?
Sounds like you wanna play some, what spot you gonna give me?
At least Cleary stepped up to play instead of hiding behind a screen...
I was joking with Cleary because we were kidding each other about playing pool earlier this week.
My comment was not meant to be a slight against you. Sorry if you interpreted it that way.
No, you don't know me, but I damn sure don't hide behind a screen either. My identity is not a secret.
Apology noted, so when are you guys gonna play?
He sucks so he'll need lotsa weight!

The best I ever played though was some guy down around New Orleans. I was really afraid when I walked into that no name bar on the lost highway. I had heard that this guy had beaten Johnny Archer and scared Keith McCready off the week before. I was young and cocky and wanted to try him some though.
So I walked into that no name road house looking for the unknown champion and there he was. I asked him his name and he said just call me "friend". I said are you the guy who busted Johnny Archer last week and he just give me a knowing smirk and said "Johnny who?".
So I had to guess that this was the guy I was looking for and I asked him to play some and he said sure what do I want to play for and I said $100 a game. He pulls back and says well that's mighty rich for this place how about $10 a game. I was disappointed but I came to see this guy's game so I said yes.
And man could he play. He ran out 27 racks on me at $10 a game before I got a shot. I was so nervous that I drilled the 7 ball right into the rubber. When he got to 30 ahead I paid off and said I'd like to bet a little higher if he didn't mind. He said sure and I said $50 and he agreed.
Well I got a Dr.Pepper and calmed down and got up and ran seven racks to get my 300 back and get a game up. He wins the next game and I said bet a hundred and he agrees, obviously a little on tilt now.
I won ten of the next 12 games and was a grand in front and he asks me to play for $500 a game. I said sure and won another five games before he pulled up.
Grudgingly he says to me that I was the toughest match he ever faced. He says usually he only plays hustlers who prey on weaker players.
I looked him straight in the eye and said "really Friend? so do I" and walked out with the money.
Never did find out who that unknown champion was. I may never know. I asked Johnny Archer about it but he can't remember ever losing to some unknown champion out in the sticks in southern Louisiana.
That guy was great though, for $10 a game I think he would have busted me in about two years when I would have ran out of bullets.
Anyone know who I might be talking about? Some completely unknown guy who plays better than Archer and who reportedly busted a bunch of good players? I'd sure like to know who I beat that night.
We probably will never play. We were forum barking, which means it most likely will never materialize.![]()
If I bark on a forum, I have no problem backing it up. I can't win but I don't mind trying. Im at SBE, US Open, and anything else that pops up on the east coast. Just show up and bust me.
Okay, will do.
If I bark on the forum about playing, it's usually in jest, but if you want to get serious about it, let me know well ahead of time, so I can dust off my cue stick and prepare for the battle. I used to go to SBE and US Open, too. They don't excite me anymore, like they used to.
At my age, I'm just as happy being a railbird. When you've seen the action I've seen, I'm very content today sitting in the stands and enjoying the show as opposed to being one of the combatants. :grin-square:
With all that said, I may show at the SBE next year because it's in my back yard. We can play then and make fools of ourselves, if you like.

That was one difference John. While you sought people to let you play with them people came looking for me to play. I didn't have to come to them with hat in hand asking if they would honor me by letting me donate to them. The only "name" person I ever asked to play was Mike Massey back when he was tuning to play in a bar table national event. The place was The Brown Derby, Airline Highway, Baton Rouge Louisiana. I could type a year, month, day, and hour behind that but it would be BS just like you have posted.
He had recently won several large events and played pretty good pool at the time. His wiki write up claims a high run of nine break and runs in nine ball in competition and a straight pool run over 200. I didn't go looking for him, I went in one of my usual party haunts and the bartender who I had been friendly with for years dropped the dime on Mike so I wanted to give him a try.
Somebody at Greenway steered people my way for several years in the early eighties. Those that were wearing long pants back then know that many of the very best passed through Greenway during that time. For the most part I didn't know or care who I played or if they were a road player. Many players didn't use their right name on the road so I didn't pay attention to names. On the other hand I have always used my nickname Hu while playing pool. Anyone that has played me almost always played "Hugh" with no last name.
Ironman can ask Danny Medina if he remembers The Rac it Bac just north of the Baton Rouge airport. Danny was driving an old Monte Carlo or Malibu, I forget which. I was just a little less hairy than my photo in the middle of my avatar. We played for hours on a bar box and there wasn't enough difference to talk about when it was over. The only reason he might remember is that he gave me his real name and contact number so we could get together and take a ride if I wanted to.
I have gambled with over a thousand people. I have long forgotten the name that all but a handful gave me. I have forgotten the name of most the places that weren't on my list of regular stops too, some that were. I think you will find that true of most people that actually played in the seventies and eighties. The idea wasn't to make a reputation, it was to make money.
While your fairy tale was funny it's obvious we never played, I didn't pass out spots to strangers and I would have peeled you like a peach without you ever knowing that I was anything more than lucky.
