it happens so rarely that i figured i'd start a thread.

it started out as $10 a game bar box 8 ball. i lost the first 3 and then won the next 3. we up'd it to $20 a game and i win the next 4.
then the guy says bet 100. i'm short on dough but before i say anything someone (a local, boy george) says bet 200 i'll put up the dough.

i played pretty well. i made 2 mistakes and only missed 2 balls. i won the set 5-1.

that's the story on how i got most of the down payment for my BCM.

Congrats bud. May I ask, what percentage did Boy George take? I've
been in the same boat before. (Backer, not player) and thought that
it would be a 50/50 split on the winnings, and the player (good player,
but not good friend, just an aquaintence) wanted a bigger cut. If its
none of my business, please say so. Thanks, Dom.

50/50. i was real surprised it went down like that. when i got to 4 games i started thinking "i wonder what my cut of this will be".

if anything i figured he'd want a bigger cut since it was his dough that got me in the box.

i was real happy with the win. especially since i went down like a 5 dollar whore in the tournament earlier that night.

Good shooting Sam. As far as the split went on the money. If I ever backed someone in a game I would have split 50/50 as well. Congrats on winning. Just think a few more sets like that & your BCM might not cost you a penny. lol

that's how i paid for my gilbert j/b and my petree! i don't book a lot of winners but if i win enough i usually buy myself something nice (usually a cue). i've never been one to keep shooting money back. i thnk that's why everyone calls me a nit:eek:!lol

I'm looking at it a little differently. His money did not get you in the box. You were already in the box. Your opponent was trying to get even in one game or set after being down 4 games. First off, I wouldn't have gone that high yet. I already know I am in his head, and that he is willing to go off for what he has on him.

Why should I give him the added mental state of knowing he can get even in one set? I worked for it, he is going to have to work to get it back. I will raise the stakes to half of what I have won, and later raise them again if I win. Eventually, I will get all of his.

The backer was butting in where he shouldn't have. He should have pulled you off to the side and asked you. You are getting all the guys money anyways, why should you cut the backer in except to get it over quicker. Anything less than 50-50 would be a rip off by the backer. Him butting in, you should have gotten 60-40 you. You didn't need him, and he wasn't a part of the original plan. You were doing him a favor, and in his eyes, at no risk to himself. This was not your normal backer situation.

Way to go. It is a great feeling to win money from an unknown person who goes off.

that's actually what i probably should have done. but without realizing it i think i did the right thing. the place was gong to close soon and it turned out we only had enough time for the 1 set anyway. i maximized my earning potential for the night

Neils right, make him chase it next time. Even though there would have only been one more set that night, you would have been guaranteed action later still being up on the guy.
Time will tell if you can still get a game with the guy, cause time tends to cool people off. He has now lost almost 300 and has had time to think about whether or not he can win. He may realize he cant, and now your atm card has expired. :(

i know the guy well enough. he's a good guy. he'll play me again. i figure 3-4 more sets before he quits for good. to be honest though it's bar box 8 ball and i don't gotta win. wth short sets and big barbox pockets everyone's fire power is exaggerated. it's not out of the question that i lose the next set or two the same way i won this one. 1 roll or 1 mistake at the wrong time and the whole game changes

I agree with spending that $!

i've always been a fan of shooting my winnings to az'rs and cue makers via cue purchases.

my gilbert j/b has paid for itself several times over already. in this tough economy i'm still doing what i can to buy nice cues from the az community. i hope others will do the same and spend a little cheddar right here

Already n the Box!

Neil is exactly right, you could have won all the money your self without a backer, hell you didn't need one at this point, this guy was gonna go off anyway, didn't matter if it was $20 a game or $40 you'd won the money your self.

Playing by the game is sometimes better than sets, it gives you the opportunity to raise the bet in increments, no tellin' how much money I've won starting out at 5, 10, 20, 40, 50, then going to 100 a game.

When you got a guy's Nose Open that is the way to play him!, don't worry they will play your way every time!

Why give half the $ away when you can get it all!

Congrats on your score tho, hard to come by these days.
