What do the Top Players in the World AIM at?

I owned a poolroom in Cincinnati and also made cues. One of my customers who played on our 3C table pretty much, Bucky Bell, made a comment that he'd play any pool player, 3C for cash.

Sherm, here's a little story.....I don't know if it was your room, but if so, maybe you were there that night....about 10-11 years ago I was driving to Florida and stopped off on a January Friday night at the 'action' pool room in Cincinatti (I forget the name of the room, but I do remember that there was a private table in a fixed up garage behind the main building)....I first played a big young guy a couple games of One Pocket, but he was tush-hoggish, and I didn't like his action so I quit him....then Gary asked me to play - thinking maybe I didn't know who he was - but I did ;), and I wisely declined his offer......Bucky was also there, and I knew him a little bit, because we played each other some One Pocket a couple years before that, once in Chicago, and once at the One Pocket tournament in Kalamazoo, Mi....well, there was a billiard table in the middle of the room, and I didn't know that Bucky played billiards, but he didn't know that I played pretty good billiards, so we agreed to play some billiards (after we both lied to each other about how bad/little we played billiards, lol) - both of us thinking we were sneaking up on the other guy a little bit...well, it turned out I was sneaking up a little more on Bucky then he was on me, lol....we played two games for $100 a game and I won both...the first game was real close, about 25 to 23, but the second game I won about 25 to 13 and Bucky pulled up....we had a good laugh about it afterward though - Bucky's good people, I like him.

PS, Bill/Mr 3c...sorry for hijacking your thread for a minute.

Lou,

Funny that Harry's lathe and cue making skills followed him to St. Louis :). Here's a quick story of his cue making technique:

While in San Jose, CA, Harry had his shop in the back of the original California Billiards where the billiard tables were. His process for completing a cue was to turn it down til it's the right size, then take it out to one of the billiard tables to roll it, file down one side of the flat-faced joint, roll again, file some more, repeat as often as necessary until it rolled straight.

That's how out of square his lathe was. It was impossible to have him make a second shaft after the fact, because after his "custom" adjustments, one of the shaft would not be rolling straight. It was a trip to watch. But in all fairness, his cues played pretty well.

Harry was a good friend and an incredible talent on the table. He once told me that pool was too easy that's why he switched to 3-cushion - he said he ran 11 or 13 racks of 9-ball when he made the decision. He had the stroke to do it but I never saw any evidence of his pool playing at that level. He is missed. One of the great characters in billiards.

Now back to the original thread :).

Oh yeah, the file adjustment! On many an occasion, I'd see Harry come into the pool hall, roll a cue on a table, check the wobble and pull out a big honking metal file out of his back pocket, give the face of the butt end joint a few passes, and repeat this process as many times as necessary. It was one of those things you could see a million times and still not believe you were actually seeing it.

OK, now back to our regularly scheduled programming :-)

Hey Lou.

I should stop by the Main Forum more often. This thread is better than Comedy Central. :lmao:

>ps. Bill....You would be surprised of how many balls are half ball hits on a pool table.

Doc, it's like they say: sometimes you have to make your own fun :-)

Excuse me but I do not understand what you are talking about with this comment. A half ball "shot" is totally different than a half ball "hit".

You were originally talking about the spot shot, which is a "half ball" hit when placing the cue ball slightly inside the long rail at the head string.

This shot occurs many times in different forms in pool. Not sure of the half ball shot. (unless your interpretation of "shot' ="hit".

Doc; That's exactly what I meant!

I'm not sure how I aim. I think I aim ghost ball. I don't know how to explain it with typing either.

Cte is the center-to-edge aiming system that many pro players allegedly use. (You've posted on this forum for how long, and haven't ran across any of the cte threads? Simply amazing.) ;) :D

to be honest i have.
put the posts are so long i cant make myself read them all.
i might do cte and just dont know how to tell people how i aim.
i have run with some good players and never have any of us asked
the other how we aim.

I find that the more I try to learn about aiming and use a specific system, the worse I play (Overthinking maybe?). As long as I keep my eyes in the right position and stroke straight I play much better. I still struggle on certain shots and am hoping that I'll figure out something one day to make shots from this particular range become easier.

I just hit it as hard as I can and yell out, "All pockets stand by."

Oh, wait. I just re-read the title of the thread. Maybe that's why I'm not a top player. :o ;)

Not that I am on your list but I will tell you how I aim. This is very difficult to explain. Lets say I am cutting a ball 45 degrees into the pockets. Standing behind the cue ball I visualize an imaginary straight line going around the object ball at the contact point, to the pockets. I do the same thing to the cue ball just on the opposite side. Then I match up those pieces and the ball goes in sometimes. I hope you guys get this. I think of it as an advanced ghost ball system but I can predict where cue ball is going with this better.

I hope you mean a straight line going through the OB from the pocket? If not you lost me. Sorry you weren't on the list. You should have been. I like your game. Johnnyt
