Food Poisoning at the Derby?

Heard rumors that some folks had problems while there, and am curious to hear any stories about it. As for me, I was forced to withdraw from the 9-ball event after limping through the first two rounds with extreme stomach cramps and a whole host of other gastrointestinal issues that culminated in me being virtually bedridden for 16 hours or so. I still had a great time playing pool and meeting people, but it was a very unpleasant end to an otherwise great week. :frown:

MANY people got sick after eating at the Italian Sub shop that sold sandwiches and pizza. It's located right across from the buffet. I think the Hotel should do something about this place. So far I've not heard anything positive about how they plan to handle it. Maybe someone should report them to the local health department.

I had heard those rumors (from you and others), but I mistakenly assumed I'd be fine eating a couple of slices of cheese pizza from there, figuring it to be a meat-related problem. Boy was I wrong! I fully intend to contact the casino and let them know about my experience.

We lived on pizza from that place for most of the event. Guess we got lucky. Seems people ALWAYS get sick at the Derby. I almost always am down for the next few days after returning. Actually feel pretty decent this year.

The Derby City Crud is a time honored tradition second only to the Vegas Heaves. Hope everyone makes it through OK.

LOL this is so true! It is my opinion that you have not truly experienced Derby unless you've gotten sick while there or right after arriving home.
 
Yeah I must have got lucky as well. I lived off the calzones for the time that I am there. Like Justin, this is the first Derby where i havent been sick afterwards.
 
Two people I know got sick from sandwiches, one from the tuna and another from a meatball sub. They had a horrible trip and it cost them considerably since they weren't able to attend or compete in things they had already paid for, I hope they are able to recover their losses.
 
I guess I got lucky. I ate lots of pizza and at least one of each sub on the menu with no problems.
 
I saw 2 guys get it, one guy had to forfeit his match, the other guy actually played my friend in the 2nd round and he looked terrible. He couldn't even make one ball.
 
I was talking to a cue dealer when a woman came up and was asking people where they had eaten and making a list. She said she got salmonella and was sure it was from someplace at the casino. The dealer I was talking to said a employee in his booth got sick and was at the hospital after eating there. I guess it pays to buy $5 cheeseburgers and whatever else the stand by the main tournament room had, except for the breakfast sandwichs imo.
 
Was ill one night...

I was ill one night. I had to take it easy that night, but I don't think it was food poising, but the four trips to the buffet at lunch time. Its amazing that I have no food intake control when I'm eating at a buffet. I didn't eat at the pizza place, but had a really good chicken salad sandwich at the small eatery next to the front desk check in area.

Food Poisoning

My wife, and I ate pizza twice. We also ate at the buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We had no problems at all. I'm sorry to hear others did, and couldn't enjoy the tournament.

We arrived on Saturday, Jan 23 and were staying until the following Saturday. On Wednesday evening I got so sick in my room in the early evening, I was bedridden for about 20 hours. My roommate actually had an EMT come to my room. By the time they came, most all of the "bathroom" action was over, so I just stayed in bed. I didn`t show my face from Wed about 6pm until about noon on Friday. Terrible stomach pains. It was somethin` special, I can guarantee you. :yikes:

AS Gilda Radner (Rosanna Danna Danna) used to say, "It`s always somethin`. First, it`s one thing, then another!"

Other than the food war, I really did enjoy DCC. I was up every night until almost dawn, bought a couple of cues, enjoyed the tourney matches and genuinely enjoyed renewing friendships. :wave3:

See you all in VF. Time to do it all over again! :p

Last year I got terrible cramps in my game after eating at the hotel. I had a fruit platter, but never had a problem with fruit before. I also got ill this year and didn't rebuy.
 
Food poisoning

Guess if I ever go I should bring my own food. Not a doc, but pretty sure you don't recover from salmonella poisoning without medical treatment. It is very serious, as in you could die.
 
Most people do not realize that the water in Indiana is different from their normal supply. Water comes mostly from treatment plants using the beautiful ohio river. It's one of the most polluted rivers in the country. Steel in Pittsburg. Paint and chemical in Ohio, and any numerous other chemical and industrial plants in Kentucky. For many years, these companies just filtered their water straight into the Ohio. Buy hey, if you don't believe in man made pollution, it's not a problem for you. I ate at the pizza joint many days. Never got sick. Its like when you go to a foreign country, dont drink the water. Mostly it was the ice cream parlor that got my business. That or Hot Browns from local restaurants in Louisville.
 
Almost every year colds and flus run rampant passing from group to group so if you are coming to the DCC, here is some unsolicited health advice you need to follow:


Don't eat the food

Wash your hands as often as you can stand it

Always wear a gas mask in the elevator

Never touch your face

Maintain maximum breath distances

cough into your sleeve

anything im missing, post it up fellas/felons

Have a healthy DCC!
