am i being a dousche

Some ppl are so die hard league that they will take wins any way they can get them. No way to tell that's the case here, but I've played with teams who would take a forfeit to split that $400 at the end of league 6 ways.

I was taught a long time ago that the unwritten rules is that if you have to ask, then you've already answered your own question.

Situations arise when you have to deal with people, and some of those people are going to do the unexpected at the worst time. That's life. When you have the balls to make a decision - or if you are in a position where you have the responsibility to make decisions, chances are that not everybody will agree with it. Unavoidably, you will eventually end up getting called a douche. I look at it like this, being a douche isn't always a bad thing, its an occupational hazard.

This is where the rules conflict: local bylaws say no forfitures in first 2 weeks of thew session ( this is week 1 of spring session ). however 3 players showed up and he left 75 mins after league start time

What is your leagues' rules on forfeitures, doubling up, and re-scheduling matches?

Please correct me if I get the situation wrong.

As team captain, one of your responsibilities is to get enough people to play the matches. Its not your responsibility to follow-up on the other team members to show up on a scheduled match time. As courtesy, the other team captain could've told you before the start of the match. It doens't sound like he extended that courtesy, and then tried to shift his failure to you.

After 75 minutes past the the scheduled match time of 7 PM, the other captain asked to re-schedule. As captain its you're duty to evaluate the offer, review against the league rules and protect your team's interest. In my league, forfeiture is the penalty for being 20 minutes late past the scheduled match. If my league if people show up, then you're required to play, otherwise its a match forfeiture.

When he didn't get his way, he chose not to play the 3 matches and left? If there are no league penalties, then it was a smart decision on his part. Otherwise, its another bad decision and he was being the douche by misplacing guilt and blame on you. That's bad sportsmanship in my book.

I hate the concept of winning by forfeit. I really do. I would much rather come up with a way of rescheduling matches to get them in. (And I'm one of those "lesser" players, imagine that?)

That having been said, I also hate being taken advantage of. If someone isn't playing fair, I'm not interested in helping them out.

I ain't all about nit-picking rules, myself. But was the weather in Mass so bad that the phones didn't work?

To add one last thing, the NFL post was pretty bad as those guys do it for the money and love the game also, but the money is so much more, and they have close to 60 player rosters so it ain't going to happen short of a blizzard where a team can't come, and those ppl have 60k other depending on them for tickets. You and your team Fast Eddie have a bar who is depending on you for ice waters all night and free peanuts. Well maybe not that, but the team which took a forfeit in our league drank ice water and whatever was free as opposed to patronizing the bar and helping them stay open.

I don't think the OP really wants anyone's opinion unless it goes along with what he believes, that's what I'm getting here so I don't have too much to say..

I will say one thing, if the weather was bad, I'd certainly overlook the other team not getting to the match this time and just reschedule.. I like to use common sense, not everyone lives by it.. Rules don't apply to every situation and league pool just is not that important! YMMV

Since you asked, and you did ask... Yes, you are being a douche.

Tuesday night, we were sitting in the bar when we got a cancellation call.
I can't remember what the VNEA time frame is but its more than 5 minutes notice.

I don't know what the captain was thinking as he knew on the weekend that one of his players was down with a bad back and another was 1100 miles away.

Normally this would be an automatic forfeit but considering we are a pretty close knit league, we will do a make up game at a later date.
If I were to take a win like this, it would get around and the next time my team might need a favor, then I don't get it.
How I've worked it in the past is that I leave it up to the team that canceled to make arrangements for a make up game, I don't chase them. If they haven't made an effort before the last 2 weeks of season play, I put in a score sheet for their forfeited night.

The tournament at the end of the season is all that counts anyway as the tournament is handicapped different to thwart any sandbagging that might have gone on.

It was an easy excuse to practice and drink beer anyway and we all had a blast.

we have rules and by the rules the 1 guy that was there on time i shoulda flipped a coin and lagged then gone off league time and just counted forfiets. league starts at 7 captain didn't show till 8 if anyone is familier with the ghost rule concept he could've played 4 matches and if he kicked our ass the 5th wouldn"t have mattered like i have already stated call me before league start time no problem talk to me 1 hour after that, shut up n shoot.

Yeah, you're definitely being a douche. Weather is out of his and his team's control. Is there some other reason you can't make it up later that you're not telling us?

Be flexible. Pool is supposed to be about fun.

....or did you just want everyone to agree with you? If so f that other guy and grab the forfeits!!!

like i said you could have done a lot of things. what you chose to do was get on here and b*tch about it. this is one of the reasons leagues have a bad name on here, people just like you. no i am not familliar with the ghost rule like i said here in atlanta we allow make up matches. and that rule still doesn't matter, you could have told him from the outset, hey if your team's not here in 15 we're doing this or this or that. but no, you waited the hour, who's fault is that. now you want to cry about it. you asked for opinions and i gave you mine. if you didn't want people to be frank with you - you shouldn't have asked.

I think technically you are within your right and the other team captain was also being a hard head, but if I were captain of your team I would just make up the match later but on the same day as your normal league day. Maybe people can only play on that one particular day, so having a make up match on a day others can't play wouldn't be fair either.

Also, if I were the captain of that other team, I would have played the guys I had and forfeited the remaining matches. My team has had to forfeit 1-2 games before since not everyone can get off work to play pool and its not a big deal. So you loose a point or two, and yes it can make a difference at the end, but its just League play. All in fun and shouldn't be taken that serious.

was this the first week of league play?

Are the first two weeks of league for setting averages?

If so, won't this screw with everones average on both teams?

The reason is because usually there are 1 or 2 teams that fax over their rosters at 8 am on the first day of a new session then the operator has to redo schedules byes and all that and switch everytrhing around. So sometrimes there is a bit of confusion on week 1 and 2

Our 8ball APA starts at 6:30 and 9 ball at 7:00. This past week the other team failed to show up and we had 3 people calling the team but no one could find them. The LO said we could take the forfeit as he could not contact them. We took it at 8:00 and headed home. My wife had an early surgery the next morning so thats all the extra time I was willing to give. Do I like to win that way? No but I do feel its a deserved punishment for them.

In your case I would have marked my sheet as they forfeited all games. That is what he did by refusing to play the 4 games he could have.

You guys got lucky

ok so here's the story

I realize yesterday was a major storm, or the day after. But I still got 7 people to show up. Would have been 8 but one of my players husbands works for the dpw therefore was out plowing. Any way at 10 of 7, 1 of the players from the other teams shows up. I have never been they guy to make the matches start so me and the other guy start shooting for fun while we wait for a few stragglers. at 8 pm only 3 players showed up. the other 5 could not make it. so me and the captain started discussing options, he had 3 players plus 1 ghost, then forfeit. He says i"m not losing a point my players didn't show.

here is my problem

if he called me before 7 and asked to reschedule, no problem whatsoever, it was 815 before their captain decided he wasn't gonna get his way so he took his shit and went home. I don't think half the team should be allowed to show up then cry and go home. I woulda made a bigger deal had my division rep not gotten a hold of Steve and he made final decision.

Before I get harped on re read the reason I got upset over the whole issue.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT EVERYBODY THINKS

I read your post and it confused me,but im easily confused!

I'd much rather have a misspent youth, than a misspelled....dousche :)
