Jesse Bowman(What a Grinder)

I just can't say enough about Jesse Bowman this last weekend at the Dr pool tournament in Oconomowoc,Wi.

The nine ball was handicapped with players going from 7 to 10 according to their ability. In the nine ball it was easier to play a safe and hook a player. In the eight ball it wasn't that easy. All these guys at this tournament could run out a rack of eight ball.

Just an example. I'm playing a guy that is rated a 5 in the 8 ball. I'm rated an 8. It is alternating breaks. This guy that is a 5 is going to get to break 6 times for sure and if he wins the flip he will break 7 times if the match goes to the hill.

I play almost perfect and run out from my first 3 breaks. The 5 I'm playing breaks and runs 3 out of 6 racks that he breaks. We end up in a hill hill match that I won by getting out on a real tough rack.

I could see what a grind this was going to be.

I never sat and watched Jesse Bowman play every match but I watched bits and pieces here and there. The few I watched were hill hill matches. I don't know how many of his matches went hill hill but I'm sure there was more. I know he had to bite, scratch and kick to win match after match after match.

These players in this tourny that were 5's 6's and 7's can play, especially on a bar table. And then you have the roll factor. These tables played ok for bar tables but you do find a bad rail here and there. It's just the way it is on valleys or any table that gets played alot.

Sometimes your playing 1 or 2 or 3 rail shape and you find just one bad spot and your shape is terrible leaving whoever it is to just run out an open rack. Really tough.

I hope I described good enough just how tough this was. And I don't care how many players and people say Jesse is superman this and superman that. He does play awful good. But to win a tournament like this you had to dig down even deeper. You had to use your knowledge to think quickly and play your shape so you didn't have to move the cue ball around very much. Not like you would normally play shape but kind of like you are playing marbles.

Jesse Engle said to me at one point, Bowman plays some weird shape sometimes. But it wasn't weird. He was playing the shape on the shot so he had the least possible chance of a rail or roll effect what the outcome was. Every once is a while you still get hooked or out of shape but the odds work out in the long run.

My hat is off to Jesse Bowman not only for winning this tough handicap tournament but the long grind and just never giving up on any shot. The sheer determination is what gets a player to the end of this big one.

Great Job Jesse. You deserve this great win and of course the great money that goes with it.

You have the heart of a lion my friend.

I for one can't wait for the chance to compete again against a player like yourself again and again and again.

And if everyone didn't know this already. He's also a pretty nice guy.

great for the game............

Good post Machino

And good shooting from Jesse.

But there was something else that was good....
..the handicapping...

If the best players didn't have to dig deep...
..it wouldn't be much of a handicap tournament

great for the game............

and he is a good guy to gamble with.

no moves just play and try to win.
hope we make a game this year at dcc.

Remember: Jesse is a bad MoFo!

What looks like a superhuman effort to us scrubs is part of the daily grind for him...coz he plays that good(ly).

I have played a few poker chip tourneys where my handicap meant I got to lose just a few chips and others got to lose many...sometimes I'd go hours without losing a game. Just playing smart pool too, within my limits but well beyond others'.

right on about Jesse...real good guy, and no funny business - JUST PLAY!

I'd like to see how you two play 1P at the Derby.

GOOD thread Geno. Still find it hard to believe that Engel was a 9 playing in the 9 ball.

I watched quite a bit of Jesse's matches and the ones that went hill-hill (maybe only 2) were because Jesse missed easy shape and gave the game(s) away.

are you his backer?
if not no disrespect but no need to get into
how i would play him unless im talking to him or backer.

Fair enough. You mentioned you hoped to play him at the dcc so I was curious. I am not his backer. I agree no need to get into the game details on here otherwise. I am sure someone who is in his area will let him know you are interested. I know he justs want to play like you said, not sure his schedule but I hope a game comes up. Keep us posted.

Look, Bartram.

Do not challenge us. We'll send i Phone, dammit...I swear we will do it.

(don't worry, folks, this is just like the watch he is sending us...no typos there!)

I don't blame you at all. I enjoy watching Jesse play when he stops in Des Moines as he is a class act. I haven't gotten to see you play yet. Hope you guys match up. We need a new pool match to bet on in the action section...too many basketball and football threads.

I had the honor of playing Jesse in the Orlando Open in 2005. What a great player! Jesse plays what I call "aggressively intelligent pool". He is one of those guys that raises your game up a notch or two as he's beating you like a drum. I remember that at 7-7, I sunk the cue ball on the break and never shot again. After the match he shook my hand, told me I played very well, and then complimented me on some of the articles I had written. I think he had seen them online. I felt great that I had played so well against such a great player. That match really motivated me at a time that I really needed it most. Jesse definitely is a very nice guy, and IMO, one of the best players in the world today.

Good Post Gene!

But I really want to know is how did the final 4 break down in the 9-ball.

I see the standings:
1 Jesse Engal $1,070
2 Geno Albrecht $830
3 Chris Patterson $600
4 Jesse Bowman $400

But who beat who? And how did the finals turnout between the two guys that drove down (over) together? You didn't let the kid off easy did ya?

Nice showing for you all!

Great report from the field Geno!
Jesse plays all right.... Played one pocket at DCC with him and he ran out like he was playing nine ball.

The comment about Jesse's position play is very perceptive...he's a great shooter, sure, but his greatest ability is his knack for breaking down a rack. He plays patterns that are brilliant in their simplicity...which is what makes him so strong on the BB.
