Ok, I just got back from the 2nd to last week in my 9-ball league and I am fuming. My captain texted me an hour before the match saying he wasn't gonna be there. I'm not playing next session and he didn't know that so I texted him back "Alright well I was gonna tell you tonight but since you're not gonna be here, I'll tell you now. I'm not gonna be coming back for 9-ball. The ride is too long (40 mins), it's too much money ($12 plus about $8 in gas), and I honestly don't enjoy 9-ball that much. (this is my first session playing it). Sorry." So I get no text back until about 5 minutes after I start playing my singles match (we play 3 singles and 2 doubles, 4 person teams and everyone plays). He says "Leave now dont need you", even though they did because without me we'd have to forfeit 2 matches. Needless to say, I got very upset but ignored him and won my match. So after that, I go to play my doubles match and I guess he got wind of it because just as we were about to start, I get a text from him saying "You are not playing doubles" So I say "You got it", apologize to everyone for him, pack my stuff up and leave without paying, absolutely steaming. Half an hour later before I get home, I get a text from him saying I owe the APA operator the $12 for the match. I told him to pay it himself, along with some other things. Now, my question is, will the operator make me pay it if he complains or will he have to pay it since he's the captain, along with the fact that he told me to go home when I was willing the stay, finish the match, and pay? Sorry for the long post!

I'm no expert. In my opinion, no one can "make" you pay, you've not entered into any sort of contract. It's the team captain who is under obligation with the LO, I believe.

What the LO can do is not let you play on any other team in his League, if he believes your captain or has a hair across his tookus.

Perhaps you ought to speak with the LO, and let him know your version of what happened, and your concern. Unless you aren't interested in playing in his league ever again, then who cares.

Too bad it went that way. Good luck.

They can't make you pay anything. Dont understand the format of the team you were on. didn't know there was partner play in the APA.

Tell your captain to be sure to send you your point money. Don't expect to ever see that money as he will probably use it toward the $12. Don't worry about it because you will still be money ahead.

I would contact the League Operator and tell them / show them (The text Messages) and explain what happened. If they say you have pay them after all that do it, and never play in that league again, that way your mind is clear and the bad Karma is on them, you know what they say what comes around go's around.

Also this way you have not burn't a bridge with the league if for some reason you decide to play with decent people at a later date, I mean while I understand the principle of the situation this way you will shine brighter then the fool you had for Captain.

You pay $12 a week to play APA.:scratchhead:
Is not the norm around $8?

You don’t owe anything and really neither does your captain. They money that is owed to the league is owed by your “team”. They may not allow the team to play until the money has been paid back or they might take the funds out of any money your team gets at the end of the session…………..Ron

That is how I understood it and was told my our LO. APA doesn't care who pays the weekly fees/dues, just that your "Team" pays what they owe. It's up to the team to figure out how they will cover their weekly cost. Usually that is each person pays their own, but there is no rule stating how it should be payed as far as I'm told.

The captain is responsible for making sure the money's there. Sucks that you had such bad blood on your team!

Your captain is responsible for the money. Contact your LO and let them know what happened. I'm sure they won't suspend you from the league or anything just cuz your captains a d-bag...

I would go directly to the LO and explaing the situation, show him any texts you still have and offer to pay $6 for the singles. Explain that you were told to leave and that the doubles money should therefore come from Captain, if thats what he can be called.

Sounds to me like you did the right thing, you wanted to talk to the guy face to face and let him know, it's not your fault he wasn't playing. You would seem to be better off being out of the team, especially as they appear to be captained by a complete Dick! Talk about throwing your toys out of the pram

Seems to me your capt may be paying more than your $12. If you leaving caused your team to be DQ then I would imagine the other players would say "Hell I ain't paying either since we didn't get to finish" So hopefully he has to cover everyone and hopefully everyone gets pissed and they lose the whole team for next time around. jmo

Definitely team responsibility to pay for it, at least from the LO's point of view. How it gets paid is another matter (by the captain, by the team, by yourself, or by everyone altogether).

Not knowing the individuals involved, I wouldn't necessarily call the captain a "dick". He obviously wasn't happy and probably responded emotionally about the situation since it appears this all happened in a matter of hours on the same night.

Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but texting that kind of information is unprofessional. Big decisions like that should be handled in a manner where the parties involved can at least hear each other's voice. Texts and e-mails can be misinterpreted on how a person presents the message. Maybe the captain felt the text was Magyar's way to back out of the team without telling him personally.

Obviously, the timing of the situation sucks. Magyar was going to tell his captain but the captain wasn't going to show. I think a little more notice would have been nice, having been a captain myself, but there is no contractual agreement to prevent players from quitting. I think a phone call may have gone a little smoother than a text.

Overall, I don't think Magyar is in the wrong but it could have been better handled by both of them. Since the captain did tell him to leave, I don't think Magyar should have to pay. The captain should have realized who was available to play to cover any matches and fees that could result in forfeit.

Apa

I play APA and it costs $9 to play and only those team members pay that actually play.

I never heard of the format that you describe.

Someone will eventually have to pay, the ? is who. They can't force you to pay. The best they can do is not allow you to play in the league until you do. Based on your post one of the following situations will arise:

A)You will owe $12 for the match you played and the team will owe for the forfeit.

B)You have an understanding LO, the Capt will owe $12 and the team will owe the forfeit.

C) The team will owe all non-paid money.

Now when I say the team will owe, what will happen is the money owed by the team will be split evenly among all team members & each member will have to pay that share before they can play league again.

Pay the $12 directly to the LO & pass along the team captain's behavior.
Then walk away with your head up, behaving better than the other guy did, and with your league history clean.
$12 is a cheap price for leaving a trail of clear credibility.
