Is Dippy Dave the New Minnesota Fats?

Given Dippy's trend of playing high$$$ matches against the current greats and sometimes beating them with the wild spots he gets, could Dippy Dave rise to the level of Minnesota Fats as a new "showman" of the pool world?

hell no.......Dip aint got what it takes and thats an insult to Fatty imop that Dip would even be close to the same category of showman.........

Fatty may not have been the best player, but he was by far the best showman thats why we all know who Fatty is.........not to mention that the fat man was a hell of alot better player than that donkey........i don't even get it Dippy is not fun to watch maybe preaction stuff but playing its brutal to watch.......

People act like Fatty played BAD or something. He didn't play upper-echelon elite... but he played "aight." Sheesh
He prob would have beaten 95% of the players on here handily.

I watched Dippy play for the past couple days and I must say he did come with some clutch shots. I watched him out move Corey on several occasions. He won the first two games outright and maybe that was part of Corey's strategy, but in the end, Dippy did win.

I know the man is no pro, but he has all the makings of a true gambler and in life, that is rare to find. For our modern day and age, to accept someone as a legend is much harder to do considering the accumulation of the 'greats' in history.

The best thing about Dippy is his gamble, and I would say that if he keeps playing these pros and win or lose, he will be playing close to even with them in no time.

With that said, I do think he has a rather immature attitude. As do many of the mods on the TAR chat last night.

I don't think your comparison is valid. According to what I've heard, Fats was a much better player, game maker, and money manager. Sure, he booked a few losers, such as Mosconi playing One Pocket, and probably some others, but nobody wins them all. Dippy is a gambler, pure and simple. I'm not saying Dippy can't play, either, just not at the same all around level as Fats. Get Jay to chime in, he's seen them both play.

Edit: Showmanship, the Fat Man, all the way!

 Confused....wasn't sure if this was meant to be a serious thread with a serious comparison...hopefully not. April fools isnt for a couple of months.

I agree lol

Dippy is no showman, but the matches he sets up are very entertaining. The spot is so huge you know the pro's are going to put on some amazing runs and Dippy is very unpredictable because one minute he makes a 2 rail bank dead center of the pocket and the other he miscues selling out the game completely.

So the game is a great show, but he's no showman.

I have seen them both play as well and Dippy is not in close to the same league as M-Fats. He is now where near the talker and excitement generator that Fats was either.
Dippy's alure is just the money, with Fats it was his attitude and gamemanship as well.

SK Custom Cues...I agree with the gamble, but Dippy could play the pros for years, and he will NEVER play on the same level. It takes a lot more than just gamble to play like a pro.

Pushout...You got just one thing wrong. Fats was no money manager (as is true with MOST big gambler/poolplayers). He never "saved for a rainy day", and while he did take care of his wife, he was never extravant, except on himself. He died penniless, living free in a hotel in TN, at the good nature of the owner.

knifemaker...Right! I once watched Fatty do an exhibition at Dave Cook's Sporting Goods, in Denver, in the mid 70's, and he stood around a pool table for almost 3 hrs, and never shot a ball. He had us all in stitches the entire time, telling stories. He was an entertainer, in the same mold as Jack White.

Scott,

While travelling with Ronnie Allen a few years ago I asked him about Fats. He said he could give him a ball but he sure didn't like it. Sounds to me like Fats was a player. At least at one hole. Don't understand why most people have so little respect for him. Care to enlighten me?

I agree 100%. What I said was that he would be playing close to even, but what I probably should have said was 'closer to even' than he is playing now.

I think what many players struggle with is the mental side of pool, and Dip knows how to control not only himself, but his opponent as well. The sellout factor with Dippy is huge, though as he loses his patience at times. I do see Dippy getting bored with pool shortly as he is the type of character to advance quickly and move on to the next thing considering it gives him the appropriate high.

Sorry dude, but there will never be another Minnesota Fats. The fat one could eat two whole chickens at a single sitting and still have room for desert. The fat one could talk more shit than any known living Human being in recorded history.

I will never forget the first time I met the guy in the early 1970's, he was bigger than life, and he never stopped talking (Shit) he always had a wad of cash in his pocket, most likely all the money he had. He lived in a double wide trailer at the time across the river from St. Louis in Illinois, he had a Gold Crown Two dead center of that double wide, from what I heard that's where Fatty went Fishin.

Dippy has a lot of money, but he will never be the next fats, they broke the mold when Fats was born!!!!!!:)

Lyn...I refuse to speak ill of the dead. That said, Fatty was certainly not above dumping...behavior I personally abhor.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't fats play a ball or two under champions?

I don't know if that was true or not, maybe when he was young. The game he was best known for was One Pocket, that is what Fatty liked to play for the Big$$$$$$ when the fish were hitten the hook.
