Heart? or Stupidity?

So tonight I went to play the guy I beat the other night to give him a shot at getting his money back. I will post the amounts in RMB because it sounds better.

When we quit the other night I was up 6000.

Tonight we teed off races to 7 for 3000 a set. I started out ok but shaky, I had taken a pain pill for my back and it was interfering with my touch. So I lost the first set. The second set went neck and neck and he had a cheering section that seemed to be applauding every time I missed.

I got a little hot and said something about it and made the guys on the rail feel bad.

So I won that set and then I felt bad and told the guy I was playing that we should just play it over and forget about the 3k.

So we did but we agreed to make it the last set and play for 5000 instead. So if he wins I owe 2000 and if I win he owes me 8000.

He starts off with 2 lucky outs where he slams the nine ball from stupid positions. Then I dog a few shots and it's 4:0 quickly.

So here is the HEART vs. STUPIDITY question.

At 4:0 I am a little pissed at myself and I tell him that from there I will bet another 5000 if he bets another 10,000.

It's a race to 7. So if I lose he gets 7000 and if I win I am up 18,000 (the 3k I am already up and the 15k he bets)

So essentially I am getting more than 2:1 on the money but giving up 4 games on the wire going to 7.

1000 rmb = $150 (about that). So I will be down $1050 if I lose and $2700 if I win.

I won 7:5. He dogged his brains out but I stepped up and played great under pressure on 4.25" pockets (Thank you CTE for the aiming system and to Coach Chen for fixing my stroke)

So was I stupid or did I show a lot of heart?

I feel great right now. This is the high you can't buy. Victory under pressure is the best kind.

I don't know whether it was either, but it was an interesting read and you won a decent chunk of change! I would go with heart over stupidity, since the story ended in victory :)
Upping the ante after getting down by 4 was really ballsy and would add even more pressure to the situation... props on the win!

No, I'd say it's just a CTE infomercial

LOL - well I have to say that CTE is part of the reason I am playing better - unless you are a player you can't really understand what it means to be able to jump on certain shots and feel totally confident.

I can tell you that there are so many shots which I would dog previously because I was unsure.

Say what you want but this guy beat me a year ago out of 6k rmb and I dogged my brains out against him then. Now I made some really great outs under pressure and I know WHY I was able to make them.\

FWIW this isn't the first time in my life I have raised the bet after being down a lot. Ralf Eckert watched me run five racks when I was down 5:0 for $200 and I raised the bet to $500. I won that set 7:5.

If it helped you get through to a new level, that's really great and what it's all about! Sounds good . .

I would say that you made a good move by raising the bet. Whether or not it threw the other guy off his game doesn't matter. You offered a bet, he accepted, and you won.

I think it was a slick move that rattled your opponent. Nothing wrong with that. I like it!

Not giving up when you were down was heart. Doubling the bet wasn't the smartest move even though it worked out for you. Or if you really felt that many games on the wire you still had a chance then maybe the original game was out of line. Either way congratulations on the score.

It is fun to watch guys squirm as they blow a big lead in a set. Some tend to get really weak as you make the game closer and closer.

John, I don't know which it was, but there is another alternative you left out it could have been the Pain Pill. I know from personal experience that at least the pain pills I was taking would make me calm, focused, and they would give me additional energy. Now I know that is not the norm for many people, but it all depends upon on each person body chemistry.

I don't know what kind of pain Pills your taking but, I was taking Oxicontin for a number of years.

Congratulations on your win.

I think you showed a lot of heart to do what you did, but somewhat stupid to play a match like this after taking pain pills.

We have a new Viffer.

The pain pills I take are percocet. I take them infrequently and only when my back is really acting up. The other night I really over did it with an 8 hour session and the next day I was paying for it.

Three days later an it still hurts a lot when I bend over the table. So I took a full pill at 6pm when I thought I would be playing at 8pm - but the match didn't go off until 10:30pm so I took another half at 10pm.

I really prefer to play on the natural with no pills but the way my back is now that's practically impossible.

I was theorizing that taking that extra half was messing with my touch. In any event I don't take them to help me focus or to be "high" when I play. I just don't want to be in agony when I get down on a shot.

The only reason I felt that I was not in a good rhythm is that I recently have begun to take lessons and the main thing we have worked on so far is my stroke technique. So I am very very focused on that whereas a month ago I would be free stroking and looking like Bustamante on one shot and like Hopkins on the next.

So for some reason I really felt disconcerted when trying to dial in my stroke and my conclusion was that it was because of the one and a half pills.

LOL Good job...oh Dippy won... paypal is mikeyfrost@gmail.com ship it rich boy!

I think you showed a lot of... well... lets just say that these things are located a few feet south of your heart

4 on the wire to 7 and you double your bet?! Sure... you were getting a good return because he was in the pot 50% more than you, but he was already 57% of the way to the finish line. Good pot odds? I don't know.

Either way, that's a heck of a head start... and you rattled off a 7-1 run for the cheese when you needed it.

Great playing!
