Would you rather gamble vs @ 2 balls stronger, weaker or same speed?

What game would you more prefer?

I don't understand what you're asking.

There's 3 people sitting there wanting a game with you for some cheese, not mortgage money cheese, but enough to make you pay attention!

There's a weaker player, a stronger one, and a same speed one. You can negotiate fair weight in any of the instances. Which player would you prefer to play and why?

I'd rather play the weaker player and outrun the spot. I trust my ability and I know how to adjust the bet.

The Stronger Player

The stronger player. Your game improves overall when you play up in competition. Heading to Breaktime for lunch with the wife then to play some 8 ball on the diamonds before the game. See you there soon. By the way, this is a interesting question.

I always thought the purpose for gambling was to win and make $$$--- so I chose the weaker player. I'm not in a fight with my money, so I like to win.

Some of the considerations I take into account:

- if there's fair weight involved, you could argue you're gambling equally in all 3 instances. But in reality, we know lesser players are more prone to cracking quicker.
- you're not as likely to learn and improve your game if you're playing someone 2 balls below you
- the weaker player is less likely to know decent pool ettiquette and you may be putting up with some ignorance (case by case basis)
- the stronger player is more likely to know some "off the table moves", and you may be subject to some gamesmanship (again, a case by case thing)

Interesting question. For me, it depends. If I'm in the mood for a challenge and don't mind putting a small amount at risk for the challenge (i.e. not mortgage money, as you mention), I'll go for the stronger player.

However, if it's the end of the month and I need the money, I'll go for the weaker player and try to outrun the spot. I figure while I'm at the table, I'm in control of my own destiny, so the spot means absolutely nuthin'.

The "player of the same speed" question is kind of a trick question, because "how do you know?" Unless you play that player consistently and know all his/her moves (i.e. he/she is a constant practice partner of yours), you can't honestly say he/she is the same speed as you.

Great question,

I'd rather play the player 2 balls weaker playing dead even !

Oh Troy, Troy, Troy... I did a google search: "Picture of HoumaTroy" and this is what it returned:

This really is an interesting question and to an extent depends on how you interpret it. I chose playing the better player for two reasons.

First off, I will probably enjoy the competition and challenge more.

Secondly, I probably have a better chance of taking it down against the better player. If the player is generally considered two balls better than me, he is probably a little less than that when he's playing me for money. I generally do play better against better players, which is not uncommon I don't think. And to the extent that he might play down a little to me (the lesser skilled player) I'd have the advantage.

This is a no-brainer...... Maximize profits and play the weakest player first, then the same, and then the best player. If you beat the best player first, you've just lost the weakest players action......

Good point but I didn't realize you got to play all three and just had to choose the order. The other advantage to this is if you lose to the first two guys you can probably get more than 2 balls from the better player and get well off of him.

Why?

Consider there's appropriate weight involved.

I like doing all the above with moderation, it is good to gamble with players that are 1/2 to a ball better playing even, but set a limit on the amount of games/money you are willing to loose.

I always set my number of games to loose at 10 games because if you are getting your brains beat out to often you will loose your Drive to win, too many beatings close together is hard to over come, getting beat will make you a better player, but like I say do it in moderation.

It is good to play a weaker player from time to time where you can really let your stroke out and play with confidence, it helps you in tougher match ups.

Hope this makes some sense!

I don't have a choice. Even if I wanted to, the weaker players wont play me for a nickel. But generally I like matching up with similar speed or better players because I play to have fun, not to rob people (even if there is money on the line, you can still have fun).

It is hard to find anyone weaker who plays,so it boils down to who will give me a spot that I can live with

Houmatroy, Tell me Why?

I'd rather play the player 2 balls weaker playing dead even !

When you and I play I am going to play you even! I like that. Houmatroy, sound like you want to hook somebody! What about your back?

Why?

You sound like my old Economics Professor? In a perfect world, yes, the weight would be equal, but it rarely is. The 'stronger' player always keeps at least 1 ball for himself, just in case. So, if he is giving you the 7, he really knows he could give you the 6.

And the only time you learn something from a better player by getting beat by him, is when you see something you DID NOT know before. The only reason you might get better is because you get pissed off at getting beat all the time, and work on your game harder, and seek out more knowledge than you did before.

I know guys that play better players all the time, and have not improved much in 20-30 years of playing. Everyone does not have the talent to be a world beater, no matter how much they play.

And the only reason players can spot so much sometimes is because the weaker player makes the same mistakes over and over again, almost every game, whether it is missing a certain type of shot(s), or errors with the mental aspect and decision making of it.
