Mosconi Cup Ranking Proposal

This is an email that I, Stevie Moore, sent to the top 20 American players,the ABP and Luke Riches of Matchroom Sports.

Dear Luke,

I am writing in reference to the Mosconi Cup points list. I don't fully understand the reason behind having international events that only a few Americans have the opportunity to compete in as part Mosconi Cup points list. America only gets four spots to go to these events that puts a limit on who gets the opportunity to play on the Mosconi Cup team. It has and remains a dream of mine in competing in such an honored event although it is almost impossible for me and/or other Americans to pursue because of this reason.

I propose taking off the international events and adding Seminole Pro Tour events to the ranking schedule in an act to really see who are the top players in America. I see this can be done since you added the Pro Players Championship right before the event started. By doing this all of the Americans will have the opportunity to earn the honor of playing in your prestigious event.

The logic behind Mosconi cup points system not working is if a player doesn't finish high in the first couple of events he has no chance to get invites overseas which means he gets pushed even further from the guys who do get invites. No chance to catch up!
 
Yeah and what happens when guys at the top of the BCA point list like Mika and Thorsten receive those limited BCA invites to go to the international events like Thorsten did for the recent World 8 Ball. Even less points for the Americans to collect to compete for Mosconi spots. Good luck in getting it changed.
 
Bump this thread poses legitimate questions. Aside from a typical support the OP, I'd say prepare for the counter offer. Or the explanation about how funding from certain people deserve more support from their list than other people which explains the issue for American players.

The demand is a great start and a deep insight into the pro pool aspects of politics.

It has not happened this way.

The 4 BCA spots for USA were attributed to Rodney Morris, Corey Deuel, Shane van Boening and Earl Strickland.

I read here that Mika Immonen had a wildcard from the organizer (read this POST). I'm not sure how Thorsten Hohmann was picked.

Thorsten did apply for and was granted a BCA spot. As he is a regular supporter of their events they gave him one.

But it is a fact that no US player lost out on a chance to play because the BCA quota from the WPA was actually EIGHT spots.

Stevie Moore has a pretty good argument about wanting more US based results included in the Matchroom Mosconi Cup Ranking Points. But it is all a little bit superfluous when a system is already in place where he could have gone to the UAE any way.

Perhaps it is the fault of the BCA in not letting players know of this situation, presumably because they thought players would expect to be financed by them.
 
The whole thing is sickening. Why in the heck is the BCA granting spots to international players? They're supposed to be looking out for North American interests, e.g., the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and CANADA.

Thorsten should be getting a spot in the events through Germany. It does not matter if he lives in the States if he is not an American citizen. He should not be given a spot by the BCA, IMHO. If this is the case, then Thorsten, Mika, Niels, and all the rest of those European players should be on Team USA at the Mosconi Cup.

Of course, since the BCA's membership consists of pool industry sponsors, the membership may not care that Thorsten is from Germany. They don't seem to give a damn about American players anymore, as evidenced by their lack of sponsorship to American players to compete in these so-called "world" events.

American pool politics at its finest, once again. :angry:

Jam totally agree man, only US Citizens should get BCA spots, but we all know what the BCA are.....................oh well.

As for the rankings and the way they are calculated, Stevie has great points and Matchroom will address those I am sure. I know Luke is aware of the issue because I contacted him last week about the issue. The trouble is that with a revamp like this it's going to take time to get it right but, get it right Matchroom will. It may just take them a year or so to get it right, continually changing the system during the season has it's own pit falls.

It is easy to see why Matchroom are the top company in the game.. After Stevie's intelligently compiled appeal they have listened to his views and reacted to them.

They have dropped the overseas events 'for economic reasons' and have added two Seminole events to make 10 all US based events where players can earn ranking points towards Mosconi Cup points.

Bravo to Matchroom Sports! This is fantastic news. Now, this, my forum friends, is what a pool organization should be all about.

I say get rid of the WPA and BCA. Give the reigns to Matchroom Sports. They know what time of day it is. :)

To JAMs point (somewhat) why doesn't Matchroom get more involved in pool here stateside? I'm sure there must be a reason, and that there are folks "in the know" that post here.

It seems odd that such a huge market as the US wouldn't be attractive to someone who knows how to promote thigs successfully. There must be obstacles, perhaps regulatory in nature?

Matchroom was started by Barry Hearn and is now run by his son.

Barry Hearn is currently the head of World Snooker and has been busy expanding the tournament list, adding Brazil, Gemany and Thailand to the schedule this year.

World Snooker has these very strange components completely foreign to American pool:

Organization
Player Rankings
Co-ordinated tournaments to minimize conflicting dates
Rules players must follow, with significant fines or suspensions for failure to comply
Qualifying School

Maybe Matchroom has sufficient on their plate without trying to herd American cats. :D:D:D
 
Its a lot simpler than that IMHO the reason is lack of TV time here in the US. Look at what airs here in front of Pool, Monster Truck Racing, Camel Racing from somewhere nobody's ever heard of and it would seem pretty obvious. Matchroom like any business are in it to make money, without TV coverage there is none to be made.
