FS: G. Szamboti?

Ok, so this is my first post. I got this cue from my father after years of him owing me money. I don't know anything about it or even what to list to sell it. I'll just take some random pictures and if you want me to take a certain picture let me know. An old friend of my dad who owns a pawn shop is helping me sell it, and can verify that it is a Szamboti. I personally don't know anything about it and am just trying to sell it for college money. Sorry if the pictures are really bad.

Hello New AZer,
Sorry to inform you that your cue is NOT a Szamboti..
At quick glace JW ( Bill Stroud) would be the maker.

I concur..

Good call Ken.. Looks like Strouds work to me also..I've never seen ringwork like that on anything Szamboti.. Nice cue though!!

It's definately from the Joss tree, either JW early after split, or made when it was just Joss. Possibly, but unlikely a Scruggs.

Cue might get you a month in a community college, or a semester of Pheonix :p

Cue

I think it looks like an early JOSS cue. Dan is a member here you can ask him. I just don't remember his id. GL.

I was told last night that it was originally a Gus, then Joss redid it and made 2 shafts for it. What that means... I have no idea.

Here's my take on what that means:

The guy who told you that feels you are dumb enough to believe that anyone would take a Gus to Joss to have it reworked.

or

The guy who told you is dumb enough to believe that.

Thanks

I don't know anything about it :( It's not my area.

Here is the story I have.

Dad pawned it, pawn shop owner had it redone by Joss after 6 months of holding it for my dad, then my dad got it back. And now I have it.

Hope you didn't take it from Dad thinking it was worth like 10K or something he owed you. Take it from the experts on here, this isn't a Gus. Your best bet is that it's a Bill Stroud JW or a Ginacue.

It's real simple. From the comments posted already from some very knowledgeable members it does not appear to be a Gus. You would have a very difficult time selling it as such here. Add to that you are new, so an authentication by some pawn shop owner isn't going to cut it.

If it was a Gus it would be worth a lot of money. So the best solution would be to call Barry and ask him if he would be willing to authenticate the cue. If he does and you are willing to use an escrow service, it would be well worth your time and money to have Barry refinish it. A Gus refinished by his son is worth more than one refinished by anyone else. But I wouln't hold your breath because from the feedback so far it doesn't sound like it is. Keep in mind also that a potential buyer here probably knows Barry personally and would certainly talk to him prior to the purchase.

Then you may get an interested buyer here. If you already know it's not a Szamboti (and I'm not saying you do) don't waste your time here on this board. These guys know their stuff and will eat you alive for trying to pass it off as such. I've seen it happen and it's not pretty.

Welcome to the forum. :grin-square:

I honestly don't know anything about it :) I'm not trying to pass it as something else, I'm just going off from what I heard. I would use the escrow service. I have nothing to hide so if someone knows him well that would help. To me it's just a stick, no offence. But I hope it can contribute to my education.

Simple

I would do yourself a favor, I would re-list the cue with pics and just note it as cue maker unknown. This will save both the potential buyer and yourself allot of pains. You may be surprised on what you'll get for it. My bet is somewhere between $350 and $1350

No problem. From my own expert eye it does not appear to be a Ginacue either. Well that, and the fact that Kevin said it wasn't. :grin-square:

If the cue is an early Joss made by Stroud/Janes, then it is worth something. Again, an authentication might help you get more than simply listing it as maker unknown.
