KD cues player Brandon Shuff beats Earl the Pearl

Just wondering if Brandon requested the Steel-jointed sleeve or that's what Kent made for him because that's what Kent wanted Brandon to use?

JoeyA

Brandon requested it, he came by his shop and Kent took all the measurements such as the taper on the butt and weight, etc.

Congratulations Brandon! Nice job!

Now please kick Shane's ass this afternoon too. Nothing against Shane at all, but I'd love to see you take down this tournament, and I know you can do it.

- Paul from First Break in Sterling

Oh BTW, I concur that no seeding is the way to go, everything should be equal for all players and let the chips fall where they may.

I think at the pro level alternating breaks would be better though.

Cool! Thanks. Next time I talke to Shuff I want to ask him more about this cue and especially the steel jointed "sleeve".

WTF is up, Mon!?

Go back to work...or that lovely family of yours!

As you know, Shuff has a very good record against SVB. Historically, they are about even.

It is a pick 'em

I don't have the #s...perhaps Shaluff will comment on the criteria when he sees this

Hi Joey-

Certainly it is the Indian and then the arrow. There are many choices in arrows. Shuff voted for Kent Davis/KD cues.

Kent Davis makes a very fine arrow. Kent knows wood. He has been a custom cabinet maker. He is a low key innovative cuebuilder and a good guy who can play some.

Best wishes to Shuff who appears calm and mature beyond his years, and to Kent as well.

Take care

ps: I don't know Brandon but I know Kent. Don't tell him I said good things about him..shssssh

Kent--'Wild Bill' says hello

I was talking to a friend of mine last night who is there, and we both agree that this tournament is being run the way all tournaments should be run, and that's with no seeding. You draw into whoever you draw into and then wing it from there.

Kahonies to Brandon for beating Earl on the TV table. I'm sure that will be highlighted in his career. Good shooting, Kid, but let's remember that Earl ain't the same Earl that is used to be. He might think he is, but he's not. Earl used to run fives and sixes every tournament match that he played back in the '80s. I don't see it anymore.

I do like the no seeding. Heard Johnny Archer went 8-nothing first round. It gives you a reality check. Everybody starting out even is the way it should be. Nobody should get a head start.

Hows my friend doing? Haven't heard from you in a while, what are you doing now, since all the poker sites have gone belly up?

The game is 10 ball and you're not going to see 5 and 6 packs, it's tough enough seeing that playing 9 ball. One of the reasons we saw that frequently back in the day was the corner ball use to go in regularly, not so much today. It seems that 10 ball has taken over the the big tournaments, and yes 10 ball is the game the pros would rather play.

I'm getting up there in age but still try to go to tournaments now and then, but I really miss the tournaments of back in the day where we could watch a colorful player like Keith McCready running all them 5 and 6 packs:cool: Life was special back then, and the memories are all we have left but that's good enough.;) Miss and love you buddy and hope you're doing well, your friend Billy I.

Old school talking to old school about old school, does it get any better than this?HELL NO!

If they've never played, tht would make them about even.

Well if we go by the arrow and not the Indian then.......

KD cue > Cuetec

Is that fancy looking wrapless cue that Brandon with? I was admiring the cue when he was @ California Billiards but forgot to ask him who made the cue.

I realized not every pro plays with junk cues ... there were some beauties among beasts.

Hidy Ho <-- not smart enough to recognize KD cue

P.S. Kent Davis makes very fine looking and playing cue.

kd cue

Kent is definitely underrated... but not under-appreciated. His work is top notch and he can do so many types of cue designs as well. I spent about an hour with him at last year's SBE just talking about cues and woods and his building philosophies. He certainly does his homework and really enjoys all the aspects that goes into making great cues.

Congrats to Shuff too! Should be a great year for him.

I was up 2-1 in matches and then lost the last 4 times. Now I'm down 5-2. Today I was up 3-0 and 4-1 in our match and then lost 8-5. No big deal, just gonna take the scenic route ;-) again lol :-)

Speak of the devil, Alex beats Matt Krah 8-0 in one inning tonight. A 2 and a 5 pack. Something to see, perfect pool.

Well JoeyA, if you believe in hard core facts, the data suggests that you are spot on regarding the rarity of 6 packs and similar feats. Observe the following data kindly provided by AZB'er AtLarge from a major 10 ball tourney in March:

Break-and-Run Games

Masters -- 49 of 256 (19%)
Pro Players Championship -- 21 of 119 (18%)
Combined -- 70 of 375 (19%)

So, for that event, 19% of total games (I think this was only recorded on the TV table) were break and runs - just 70 of 375 games. Of those 70 B & R's, how many were consecutive "packages"? Not too many, I would guess. There are only 14 total "5 packs" available mathematically (70 / 5). I would bet that no one in that event ran more than a couple at a time. ...

Those data were from (1) all 20 of the matches streamed by Accu-Stats at the 10-Ball Masters event in Virginia in March and (2) 7 of the matches streamed by Inside Pool at the SBE Pro Players Championship in Valley Forge in March. Both events were 10-ball, and both events were alternate break.

So, in one sense, there were no packages, because the same player never broke twice in a row.

But we can still ask -- how often did a given player break and run two or more games in a row, even though his opponent broke for intervening game(s)? The answer is that, for these 27 matches, there were ten such "2 packs" and one "3 pack" (Immonen, in the winners' side finals). No one broke and ran more than 3 times in a row.

Of the ten "2-packs" mentioned above, the other player involved broke and ran the intervening game three times, creating a "3-pack" of a different sort -- 3 games won in a row by B&R, but by two different players.

So "packages" of any sort were pretty rare in these streamed 10-ball matches on reasonably tight equipment (Diamond tables).
