What is the worst thing or the best thing you ever seen in pool.

Both situations are "Low Class". I did not know that about Russell, that disappoints me but it does not surprise me at all about Strickland with all of his off the wall behavior that he has displayed over the years.
I can see saying politely to an adult that you do not sign autographs or you just don't have the time but to treat a kid like that is totally uncalled for.
That is something that kid will never forget. It works both ways, good memories & bad ones.
 
Honestly when I was a kid growing up in NYC we use to go to the NY Yankees, Brooklyn Dodgers, and NY Giants Games all the time. Kids would ask player to autograph a ball or their glove, and the player did if for free.

Now autographs have become a Big Business, for the players, Sport Memorabilia, a Card Show have many big named player jumping on board to sign their Signature for a FEE.

I was at COSTCO last weekend, and they had a bunch of Autographed Sports Memorabilia for sale, all signed or autographed with certificates of authenticity For Sale.

The Baseball Cards I attached with Close Pin to my Bicycle as a kids to make a cool sound, destroying those cards, if I had keep those card from the 50 with some of Baseball Great would be worth big bucks now.

Yes, autographs were free by all players back then. Those players were "Men". I too use to put baseball cards on my bicycle, all us kids did that back in NYC & LI.
You have to be a little older then me to have gone to the NY Giants & Brooklyn Dodgers games. My father in law played 2nd base for the NY Giants back in the 50's. Maybe you remember him: Davey Williams.
 
The greatest thing about pool is that a man can play it for 90 years out of 94... So far I have 28 out of 32.

Another great thing going on is a small movement within pool now to take it to schools. Pool is going to be in schools all over the world soon.

It's one thing to have a strict no autographs policy, but to not do it over $10 for a kid who loves you(u know how kids are) so much to carry a framed picture of you is completely another. F%CK Earl and anyone else who would behave like this.
 
a guy i know was buying a cue from a friend of mine. it was 700 and the guy was making payments. anyway my friends letting the guy hold and use the cue like he already owns it while he makes payments.

the guy buying the cue dogs a shot during a tournament and then puts the tip of the cue on the ground and steps on the shaft. it was a jaw dropper!
 
A guy slapping up his wife in the parking lot after she lost an apa cities match.
About six or seven of us informed him that if he hit her one more time he might not make it home in one piece that night:angry:
 
Worst, seeing a grown man pull a gun on a 14 year old boy and telling him he had to lose the $300 dollars back to him at $5 a game. The man was a well-known pro's brother and was a bully. Within 6 months he was dead after beating a man up, chasing him down to beat the guy some more so the guy pulled a knife and stabbed him.

The best, watching Shannon Daulton and Alex P. play about 12-14 years ago at Q-Masters after Alex had beat everyone for the cash. It was a marathon but Shannon got the money after a grueling match.

I have seen a professional player travel around the world on their last dime, do well in a highly rated WPA sanctioned event and get STIFFED.

Happens all the time.

Saw a guy in bar walk up to a table get down to shoot and slip on some peanut shells on the floor and fall in crack his jaw on the table and the chalk so when he final gets up from the floor his entire chin is a mass of blue smears. Funniest thing Ive ever seen.

Were playin in league last year and the place is full. Everybody's having a good time. At the time [ he passed earlier this year] the oldest player in the place is our friend Jim. 85, almost deaf, got a hearing aid but won't turn it up, you have to explain a foul and BIH every time it happens, can not make 2 balls in a row, but he was there every day. Great stories, great guy. Well this waitress [who shall remain nameless] is standing across the table from Jim and in the middle of his shot yells his name out and flashes her boobs when he looks up! You should have seen the grin on his face! It was good for all of us but that was Jims best day ever. RIP

Not to be defending poor actions by Earl, or Bill Russell, but the general consensus you guys have come to here isn't complete.

First of all, the likelihood of a small child even knowing who Earl Strickland is is very remote. It is very likely that this childs father had the "framed" photo and sent his child up for the autograph, seeking to avoid the $10 fee. Again, this is speculation on my part, as I wasn't there. But I bet neither was the person quoting this story. This sort of thing happens all the time to athletes.

Again, not to go to great lengths to defend sports figures who treat fans poorly, but they have some gripe here. most of it comes from the fact that their signature and likenesses have become an industry for others to profit from. There are individuals that will go to events to get photo's and autographs merely to turn around and put on ebay. And while it isn't costing the athlete anything, really, it still is aggravating for others to profit on you without involving you.

Is it frustrating to see a young child get turned away by an athlete, yes. In reality, most athletes recognize this and take care of the ones that they can tell are truly genuine. The instances of very famous athletes taking hours to sign for fans doesn't get publicized very much, but the few times when one is a bad guy will get trumpeted to the heavens.

Bill Russell is a different case, by the way. Many different factors involved, in a completely different era than we live in today. It still doesn't excuse surly behavior, and if I remember correctly he was certainly guilty of that, at times. But if you doing any research on him you'll see that he was a very complex man. And the story we've heard might also not be complete, either...

Down from my soapbox. As to the original point of the thread, I've seen many good and bad things, and nothing comes to mind specifically.

Well, the best thing recently was the young lady selling beer at the state tourney yesterday! :D:p:o:grin: Oh my word. It simply continued to reinforce the point a good friend of mine and I proclaim often.... "Youth is wasted on the young!"

(Yes, I am that shallow. But wow... )

As soon as I saw the original post, the first thought I had was the same as justadub's. As much as a lot of people love to hate Earl, I find it difficult to believe that any human could act in this fashion...with full knowledge that they are are being watched. Sometimes the truth gets in the way of a good story so it is put to one side in the hope it won't be noticed.

PS I was not there. I was probably shaving with Ockham's Razor!:shrug:
