Dragon Promotions is pleased to announce the very first Straight Pool Hall of Fame during the middle of our World Tournament of 14.1 . The dinner will be on Aug 31,2011 at the Hyatt Regency in New Brunswick, NJ.

Currently we have 5 players on this year's ballot . Our plan is to induct 2 players posthumously and 1 living inductee for 2011. We are considering seniority in age as a factor .
Here are our nominees for this year.

Ray Martin
Dallas West
Nick Varner
Jerome Keough
Alfredo DeOro
Willie Hoppe

The winner will receive expense paid trip and entry into the 71st World Tournament

Thank you for your help!

I think we may be missing a couple really obvious ones.

What about Willie Mosconi, Ralph Greenleaf, Jimmy Caras?

Mosconi, Greenleaf, Crane and Sigel are, most likely, the best four 14.1 players of all time. Posthumous choice should be either Mosconi and Greenleaf. Living is a slam dunk for Sigel.

WILLIE HOPPE, whose brilliant career was one of the longest in the annals of the sport, is considered by many to be the greatest all-around billiard player of any era. In 1906, at the tender age of 18, Hoppe won his first world's title by defeating the renowned French champion, Maurice Vignaux, at 18.1 Balkline in a memorable match in Paris. He went on to win the 18.2 Balkline and Cushion Carom titles and years later, between 1936 and 1952, held the Three-Cushion title 11 times.

No 14.1 titles.

My take on this

Dragon Promotions stated clearly that age was a factor. Keough, DeOro and Hoppe were the founding fathers...I assume next year the slightly younger generation of Mosconi, Caras and Greenleaf will be included in the posthumously nominated catagory. Later the Mizerak era.

As for the greats that are still with us Varner, West and Martin are at the top of the age group. I assume next year we will see Sigel, Rempe, and others nominated.

Just my thoughts...either way I just paid the $75 on-line to attend the dinner. What Charlie is doing makes sense to me and I want to be there for the first induction ceremony.

I do agree that Hoppe's nomination is a mystery...I am sure it will be explained at the ceremony.

Also, perhaps rather than age for the posthumously nominated catagory era in which they played could have been added.

Just my humble opinion!

Meh, they shouldn't call it seniority in age then. Dead people aren't any age.

We are considering seniority in age as a factor.

... and you guys forgot about The Machine Gun?

:banghead:

I voted for Ray Martin - 3 world championships - and if the balls spread right, he could still win!

A few points:
Alfredo de Oro was not the first 14.1 champion. According to Charlie Ursitti's web site, that title fell to Ralph in the first championship in March/April of 1912. The top finishers:
1. Edward I. Ralph
2. James Maturo
3. Alfredo De Oro
4. Frank Sherman
Ursitti's site shows the chronological scores for all matches in that event. De Oro immediately challenged Ralph and they played a championship challenge match which was suspended when it was nearly finished with Ralph leading. De Oro won the replayed match to 600 points.

I'm not sure who Jerome Keough was, but Jerome Keogh is credited with the development of 14.1.

Also, I think it is bad to confuse Mosconi/Hoppe.

That Greenleaf was left off the list is remarkable.

Maybe I'm missing something too. Why is Willie Hoppe's name on a 14.1 Hall of Fame ballot??

Yeah, that's what I say.
Something wrong with a straight pool list that has Willie Hoppe on it
and not Frank Taberski.

Greenleaf and Mosconi should be the first two guys to go into any 14.1 Hall of Fame.

Agreed. Can't vote for anyone to be inducted if these two greats aren't already in. The first vote should be for say, 5 or so founding inductees with all the greats included on the ballot. Then do the annual vote thing. I don't see any of the 6 names on the current ballot qualifying in the top 5 of who should get in first.

I have to say I'm completely baffled by the nominees...not that they aren't deserving of being in the HOF but come on! Greenleaf, Mosconi, Lassiter, Caras, and Sigel should be the automatic first 5 in, sort of like the first baseball HOF inductees in 1936 were all automatic shoe ins. And how Hoppe got nominated is beyond me, I mean you might as well nominate Andre Agassi! And even more baffling, 6 people have voted for him!!

I heard an old rumor that a half assed car salesman named Irving Crane could run a couple of balls from time to time

Two thoughts:

1. Based on post #1, Dragon Promotions is not competent, or at least didn't expend much initial effort, to handle this task.

2. Do we really need a Straight-Pool Hall of Fame? The BCA HOF, though subject to questionable election procedures in the past, does house most of the great 14.1 players of the past. I believe the One Pocket Hall of Fame was established because many of the greats of one pocket and bank pool were not recognized by the BCA HOF. That's not the case with 14.1. Should we also have separate halls of fame for 8-ball, 9-ball, 10-ball, etc.? It's just too much. Work to improve (possibly by enlarging) the original HOF for cue sports in general, don't water down its importance by establishing multiples.

Why a HOF for 14.1

Ignoring the fact that the list of names was an embarrassment. . .

What is the purpose of another hall of fame?

I believe most of the names that were suggested are already in the BCA hall of fame.

I don't get it. Dragon has a terrible habit of calling events 'world events' - and now their own HOF!!!

Give me a break.

All of this naming nonsense makes as much sense as calling the upcoming 14.1 event a'world tournament'. It is a disgrace.

It is not a world tournament!!!

I can appreciate the argument that a 14.1 hall of fame is not necessary, but if we do start one, a 14.1 hall of fame without Mosconi and Greenleaf would be the equivalent of a Baseball Hall of Fame without Ruth and Gehrig. Leaving out Crane, Caras, Sigel and Lassiter, is the equivalent of leaving out Hank Aaron, Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, and Willy Mays from the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Well, you get the picture ......

If we start a 14.1 hall of fame, it starts with these six, as any 14.1 hall of fame omitting any of them would be a joke.
