The Texas Express Goup

Avitar back row: Robin-Randy-John, with the great Willie Mosconi.

Randy:

You *do* know that including Willie Mosconi in any group with "Texas Express" as their title, is something that would've made Willie himself forehead-vein-popping and spit-flying cursing, right?

Nice pic, though.

I think that about this time of his life he had mellowed out UNLESS you mentioned the Fat man.

We flew Mr. Mosconi in for this event. Willie was the main attraction. I have a taped interview that we did with Willie, one of my prized possessions.

Hope Rock'n Robin checks in here. He has a great memory, as long as it happened after 1pm....:-)

John was great to work with. His mind was going all the time. Our first tour was due to his planning and hard work. Damm good thing he didn't drink alcohol, coffee was enough.

Miss him also.

Texas Express Group

I remember that. Must have been 17 - 18 years ago? I played on the Billiard Factory team for a few years with Richard Sauer.

DAAAAAAANNNNNNNG.....what a good looking bunch...

along with Mr. Mosconi and his wife, we had Jimmy Caras and his lovely wife. They were all very gracious and signed many autographs for the hordes in attendance.

Nice looking guy in the foreground, can't say much for the three taller fellows in the back.:p

Nice thing about ChezzKnee, you could buy a Membership, you could buy your way into the event, you could buy yourself or others in the Calcutta, and you could Buy a new pistol, all in one tourney.

Just some quick notes .... This tourney was the Texas Hall of Fame event. We inducted Mr. U.J. Puckett who was recently deceased. We had an open 9-ball event, a ladies 9-ball event, and a great one-pocket event. I directed the ladies and one-pocket shows while John and Randy wrestled with the open.

I remember Vivian winning the ladies and Julie Mason coming second. The one pocket was filled with great players and matches, one notably Jersey Red missing a spot shot to let Jimmy Fusco advance, David Henson taking out Steve Mizerak, and there is where my memory gets fuzzy. Seems like we had a tournament report in the Texas Billiard News or American Cueist, that i might be able to track down some day.

All in all, it was a legendary event filled with many legendary players. It was standing room only and thanks to Bill Porter and Mike the Cop for getting us the pics.

Sad to say, John is long gone. He was a visionary who helped transform professional pool with the Texas Express rules. John was a bear of a man who loved the game and the players but didn't take any crap from anyone! I kind of liked that about him. Sure do miss the dude!

John used to hold the Texas Express Tournaments at Shooters Olathe every 90-120 days. They were great events, run well and always eagerly awaited by everyone in these parts.

I bought a lot of cues from him when he used to come around. I still have Bob Vanover`s fancy Palmer (with wavy veneers) with his name in the buttsleeve. I remember some local young`uns asking who Bob Vanover was, and could he play pool........

If you have to ask, you don`t need to know.......

I miss John, too..............

Not getting the picture but i think i was at this event , if you walked in the front door the foosball tables were directly to the left and behind the rail where the 8 footers were they set up a table where Willy and his wife sat . Believe John's girlfriend's name was Sunny , she was from Corpus . Think John was packing heat most of the time .

he was a Bear of a guy but could be very funny, but could get a little riled up at times too.
We were at a place called Tournaments in Denver and John was running the show. One of the locals barely got it the money and wasn't too happy about his finish or the pay back. Imagine that?
He confronted John about it and John said that the payouts stood. The guy told john to stick it and john was off and hot on the guys heels. our own I salnd Drive and I were watching and near fell on the floor laughing.
John gave up chasing the guy and came back in and settled right back into the Tournament. He looked at us smiling and said,"that guy is pretty fast"~!!
I laughed for an hour!
No he didn't take any crap from anyone. He was fair though!

I only met John a few times when I played in a few events on the east coast. He was a nice guy and he ran an efficient tournament. I would love to hear some more stories about him.
