Any good info out there on the JC tournaments? Didn't P&BMagazine do a series about ten yrs. ago? For an event with such lore attatched to it there isn't much recorded about it.

mod edit: fixed 'Johnston' for you. -Mr. Bond

Sports Illustrated did a couple of stories about it. They're probably available on line.
They were in the Dec 4, 1961 and the Feb 25, 1963 issues.

Just to make a small correction in your title......the city is Johnston City, Illinois, not Johnson City. It may help with your searches.

Found a nice pic of the Jansco Brothers to share from 1962...
I had never seen their faces before...

Have to admit it....I can't stand it.....

Weenie Beenie's name is spelled wrong on the tournament board.

More than once I've pointed out a great player's name spelled wrong
on a tournament sheet....often the response is "AAH, I never could spell."
Sometimes I actually say what's on my mind "So why are you doing this job?"

...we're talking posterity here

So are Vives and Cokes.

Thanx....I didn't know their names for sure.
I've done lots of tournament sheets...I'm quick to correct and usually ask
if uncertain.
I hate misspelling a person's name.

..and I don't wanna hear how I spell 'thanx'.....;)

Nice clips. I've got an intact copy of The First Five Years of Chalk Up but I don't want to cut it up into snippets...lol...although I have considered just scanning the whole thing

I would not dare cut up my Chalk Up!!! LOL.

How about Daddy Warbucks finishing 5th in the 1-hole event? I knew he played WELL. I just didn't know he played THAT well. Then again, if I drew Hubert...based on what I heard about the man... I'd MAKE SURE he won.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the players spelled their names wrong on purpose. I don't think some of the hustlers wanted any publicity.

Thanks for the memories

about Johnston City. I went there three times, not as a tournament player, more as a punk kid, hustler wannabe. (Damn Alfie. Doncha think you're being a little harsh?)The first time was with Sonny "The Mantee Raider" Springer. I was able to watch the toutnament games but when the guys headed for the back shack area for all night action, I was too young to get in. It was October in Illinois so the nights were less than balmy. Freezing's less than balmy, right? However the pool bug doesn't allow for pain so I watched many one-pocket games, proposition's of every kind and the never ending ring nine-ball games that became Jimmy Moore's torture chamber through the window. he was unstopable so they came up with ten-ball to slow him down. Yeah, right!. Mr. Moore, standing tall in his cowboy boots and slipping his hand all the way to the back of the wrap with each shot re-defined running out. Just about the time my blood was beginning to clot from the cold a very nice, very round man named Wanderone came up and said "They can't keep my buddy out in the cold. You ain't even got no coat. What's the matter with them mooches". I was in. Keep it nice. Alfie
