Support BEF and help spend Dr. Dave's money

My belief is that you should make this a yearly thing. So next year, maybe some of the tightwads on this site will loosen the 'ol money belts a little more. I've seen so many donate money to send someone to a tournament somewhere, and this is also a good thing to do, but for cryin' out loud, we're talkin' about our youth and the future of American pool here.

Once again, good job to all those involved. My hats off to ya!!!

That's a great idea! I'll put a note in my calendar so I won't forget.

We're currently at $420. There's only one day left to maximize my match of $500. We only need $80 more. Anybody else out there think the BEF is worthwhile and deserving of support?

Thanks,
Dave

The purpose for this thread is to rally support for the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF). And to help provide encouragement, I am offering to match all AZB contributions over the next week up to a total of $500.

The BEF is a great organization and a good "cause." They provide various programs for juniors in the billiards community. The BEF funds academic scholarships, produces the Junior National 9-Ball Championships, and sponsors juniors to attend the WPA World Junior 9-Ball Championships. The BEF also encourages youth to stay in school and further their education while building and maintaining a lifelong love of billiards through the “Pool In School” program. For more information, visit their website here:

To contribute, go to the BEF website. Under "Donate to Help Kids" on the left side of the screen, enter the amount you want to contribute and click on the "Donate Now" button. If you prefer to not use PayPal, you can send a check or money order directly to the BEF. The address and contact info can be found here.

Again, I will match (up to $500) all donations the BEF receives within the next week (by October 3). Please send me a PM or e-mail when you make a donation so I can track how much I need to contribute.

FYI, the BEF is a non-profit organization and your gift will qualify as a charitable donation, which you can claim on your taxes as a deduction.

Please contribute whatever you can, even if it is only a few bucks.

Thank you for your time and for helping me support the BEF.

Regards,
Dave

This is the last bump and last chance to spend the rest of my money. $80 more will max out my match.

Thanks again to everybody who chose to support the BEF.

Regards,
Dave

Okay, you got me. I'm in for 80 clams. :D

I must report since my previous post in this thread that I did, indeed, receive a letter dated September 27th from Laura Smith, Executive Director of BEF, thanking me for my $50 donation I sent in a few months ago. The thank-you letter made me smile! Now BEF will be on my annual list of pool-related philanthropic endeavors. :p

I don't do PayPal, Dr. Dave. PM me your postal address, and I'll issue you a check today.

Dr. Dave, am I supposed to send it directly to BEF and not you? If so, here is their postal address for those who don't do PayPal. I will issue the BEF a check today for $80.

Thanks JAM!!! That's great news on this Monday morning. We've now reached the $500 goal. With my match, that's $1000 to a very worthy cause.

Thanks again,
Dave

PS: I'm glad you got the well-deserved thank-you for your previous contribution. I'm sure the BEF and kids appreciate your support.

What exactly does this organization do? I'm late on this action, but will donate as long as Dr Dave still gets charged.

BEF said:
The Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) was formed in 1993 as a 501(c) (3) non-profit charitable organization and is committed to promoting education and encourages the development of life skills through youth billiard programs. The BEF supports youth by funding academic scholarships, produces the Junior National 9-Ball Championships and sponsors billiard athletes to attend the WPA World Junior 9-Ball Championships. The BEF encourages youth to stay in school and further their education while building and maintaining a lifelong love of billiards through the “Pool In School” program, which promotes billiard clubs, teams and billiards as part of the physical education “Lifetime Sports” class.

You can find their website, and lots of other information, right here.

I already sent in my $500 to match the $500 we raised before October 3, but please consider making a contribution anyway. The BEF puts on the Junior Nationals tournament, funds scholarships, and administers the "Pool in School" program, all in support of juniors in billiards. I hope you think the BEF is worthy of your support.

Dave

Support the Juniors

I applaud Dr. Dave for matching donations to the BEF.

CSI also supports the BEF and we put 13 kids through to the Nationals. Not to toot our own horn - but we would like a 'little' acknowledgement - since it did cost out close to $1,000.

We feel that all that support the juniors should be recognized.

Here is the press release article on that:

We want to congratulate the fine performances that 'our' players delivered.

CSI Sponsors Top Junior Players

CueSports International (CSI) sponsored 13 young players to the 2011 US Junior National 9-Ball Championships. Produced by the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF), the event was held at the Huskies Den at Northern Illinois University July 6-10. The players CSI proudly supported this year were: Sheldon Barber (Gallup, NM), Shawn Begay (Gallup, NM), Chad Behnke (Farley, IA), Levi Behnke (Farley, IA), Chris Byers (Tualatin, OR), Mikey Evans (St. Peters, MO), Ricky Evans (St. Peters, MO), Danny Olson (Broomfield, CO), Manuel Perez (Kansas City, KS), Sergio Rivas (Milwaukee, WI), Kirk Short (St. Clair, MO), Joey Torres (Tomball, TX) and JC Torres (Tomball, TX).

CSI wishes to congratulate the following players for placing in their divisions: Danny Olson (1st Place in the Boys 19 and Under), Chad Behnke (4th Place in the Boys 19 and Under), Shawn Begay (2nd Place in the Boys 14 and Under) and Joey Torres (4th Place in the Boys 14 and Under). Over 100 junior players participated in this year’s BEF produced event with the hope of winning titles, scholarships, prizes and compete in the World Pool Billiard Association (WPA) World Junior 9-Ball Championships which were held in Kielce, Poland September 1-4.

In addition to competing in this year’s junior nationals, several CSI sponsored players have also successfully competed in the BCAPL Nationals. Long time participants in the BCAPL National Championships, Chad and Levi Behnke hail from the well known pool and billiard Behnke family. The young brothers have cashed in several BCAPL national divisions including the Men’s Open Singles and Mixed Open Team representing their family’s pool room, the Dakota Cue Club.

In 2011 Danny Olson, at age 18, had a banner year. In addition to winning the US Junior National 9-Ball title, he won the Men’s Advanced Singles and was a member of “the Wrecking Crew” which finished 9th in the Mixed Open Team division at the 35th BCAPL National Championships this past May at the Riviera Hotel & Casino.
Chris Byers, in his first year at the BCAPL nationals became noticed quickly. At age 17 Byers was a member of “Abracadabra,” the 1st place Mixed Open Team finishers and out of 1328 entries, finished 2nd in the highly competitive Men’s Open Singles division.
CSI is proud to be able to support these tremendous young talents and the BEF in their goals and the US Junior National 9-Ball Championships.

CueSports International is dedicated to creating more choices for all players. In the past seven years CSI has directly paid out approximately Seven Million Dollars to players. CSI is the parent company of the BCA Pool League and the USA Pool League. CSI also produces independent events such as the US Bar Table Championships, the Jay Swanson Memorial, the US Open One Pocket Championship and the US Open 10-Ball Championship. Wow! That's strong, Mark. I know BEF must be very appreciative, and I hope you got a thank-you, either verbally or in the forum of a letter, acknowledging receipt of your very kind donation.

Many years ago, '99 to be exact, I was part of a team that produced a same-day-delivery job for Senate having to do with Monica Lewinsky. We put our heart and soul into this job. It was like the Super Bowl or Mosconi Cup of my industry.

About a week later, a thank-you letter came from the Senate that gave us a glowing review as well as appreciation for accomplishing this difficult task. I can't tell you how much every single one of us in the office appreciated that thank-you letter. I still have a copy of it, framed.

I've heard of the Behnke name. The BEF is one way to keep professional-caliber pool alive. It's very important for those of us who do want to see professional pool thrive in the United States. Thanks, Mark Griffin, for helping the BEF.

I love the fact that the BEF donation is a tax write-off. It makes it double sweet for me. :p

Mark,

Thank you for the info and for your support of juniors.

Dave
