Mosconi Cup Team USA Named!

Top 5 guys in ranking points got the spots. IMO that is 100% fair and the way to go. Maybe it will make some of the players who only play "some" of the ranking events make a little more effort to get out there and play and thus make the fields better in those events.

Not a huge fan of Putnam because of his antics and attitude at times but he got second in points and got second at the US-Open and for him not to make the team would have been robbery. Morris not long ago drilled Alex in the final of a fairly major tournament to win it. Archer had another steady year of underachieving for his talent level and still got into the top 5, SVB wsa a shoe in and is clearly not only the best player in the USA but the most committed to playing professional pool on the gloabl stage. Dechaine did everything he needed to do to deserve this shot.

I can thing of noone on this team that does not deserve to be there, they ARE the top 5 guys in the ranking events, no politics needed, they all earned it more then anyone else.

Can you clarify??? SVB is hands down the best player in the USA. But I do agree with the rest of what you say...they earned it and they should be there!! And whoever said Charlie Williams should be there???? I think I puked in mouth when I read that...you gotta be kidding!!!???:embarrassed2::angry:

WITH The 2011 partyPoker.net Mosconi Cup set to kick off at 11am on Thursday 8th December, the team selected to represent America at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas will be Shane Van Boening, Shawn Putnam, Mike Dechaine, Johnny Archer and Rodney Morris.

It has just been anounced that Team Europe will consist of

Darren Appleton
Ralf Souquet
Nick VanDenBerg
Niels Feijen
Chris Melling

A strong team indeed, and a team of Mika Immonen, Huidji See, Thorsten Hohmann, Mark Gray, and Karl Boyes, none of whom made the team, might be nearly as dangerous.

Let the games begin!

My pick would be SVB, Corey, earl, hatch and shannon daulton, possibily gabe owen, but who am I? lol.
hopefully USA will pull it off this year, I will be going to root for the USA.

btw, if Mika lives in NY, i suppose he's a us citizen, i don't like him being on the europe team, even though he didn't make it this year.

True, and I really think Hohmann and See could replace any of the players in the europe team. Even though I know the ranking system is the only "fair way" to pick a team, I still would like maybe one spot for us to vote.

You're not the first to suppose this about Mika. I suppose many of you supposing individuals have a very strong anti immigration-stance, seeing as
you only have two parties to choose from. Why would you all of a sudden want to hand out citizenships?
btw, thats one way of saying Mika does not have US citizenship, and I'm sorry that you don't like him representing his country and his continent at the Mosconi Cup.

How in the sam hell does the world 10-ball champ who won a $60,000 tournament with pretty much the strongest field of the year not qualify for a spot on the Mosconi Cup?

Not to mention that Thorsten has made over $95,000 this year, second for Europeans only to first place Ralph and 4th in highest earner in the world...

Picking Nick Van Den Berg over Thorsten is almost criminal. Hohmann got screwed, he has to be wondering "WTF..." atm. Huidji See is probably thinking atm that Matchroom thinks he is from Asia, because given he is Dutch, the 5th highest player in the world on the money list, and the world 10-ball champ he has to feel a little boned atm as well. See played pretty awesome in the US Open.

With this line up, I hope team USA doesn't get crushed so bad they wouldn't finish the race...

Matchroom sports stated clearly at beginning of the race which event's finish points would determine one's score to be selected into team member. 10 events listed for USA team and 13 events listed for Europe team.

Although Huidje See won the World 10 Ball Championship this year, his total accumulated score placed finished him on 6th and 6 points short of Niels Feijen who's 5th.

As for Thorsten, although he is ranked as one of top player on WPA ranking, him not competing in Euro Tour has killed his chance of increasing his points to the top.

For this year's Mosconi Cup, I believe players were picked straight from their points accrued. No Wild Cards, just 1-5 on USA list and 1-5 Europe list.

I think if Hatch would have beat Putnam in the US Open then he would have made the team, it was only a few points difference.

I agree, no back room deals or politics involved this year if they just took the top 5 on the points list for each team.

If Hatch had finished 3rd or better, he would have made the team. If See had finished 3rd or better, he would have made the European squad.

Johnny, Niels and I sat up in the stands Friday night and worked out the math. Keep in mind though, that was based on the idea that Matchroom would pick the top five from the lists.

Of course, that assumes that there were no dumps late in point events involving players in contention for the teams.

Wow Mike, that is crazy, I met See at the Derby last year and he is a pretty nice guy, maybe next year.

Right Mike. I was thinking only of Matchroom in terms of their two wild card picks on each squad. BTW, I'm not insinuating that Matchroom would make some sort of underground "deal" but simply that they have the right to basically pick whoever they want as the last two members of each team. That could include consideration for who they think would make for a more popular event. This year their picks coincided with the points list.
