Charlie Williams named as Captain Team USA Mosconi Cup!

Playing Captain...

I think what Matchroom should do is elect a playing captain, and instead of payin a 6th member of the team, give the playing captain a little extra cheddar! So with $7500 going to each member, they give the captain $10,000, as an extra stipend for being captain! Also another idea would be to reward the MVP with a cash bonus from the extra money saved on the spot for the non-playin captain!!! Hence, no need for a 6th member of the team and more money an motivation for the players that earned it!!!

My 2 cents...

...
Matchroom considered a number of contenders for the position of non playing captain. ... no conspiracy, no muscle flexing.

It cannot be a surprise that two of the three players would choose their manager to be with them.

All I wait to hear now is a press release from the US Mosconi Cup Team Lawyer

Is the criteria Matchroom considered in this thread?

The people involved at Matchroom are probably more knowledgeable about pool on a global basis than all but a few people. They have a network of insiders in all the sports that they cover. So nobody who was deserving of a place would be missing from their list

O come on! I work next to the PR folks at my company and know sometimes words are put together that aren't true.

AKA: Then how the pluck is Charlie the logical choice?

Here's a pretty good Wiki article about Mosconi Cup: Wiki Mosconi Cup article.

I did not know this: In its earliest days, the Mosconi Cup was created by Sky Sports and Matchroom Sport as an exhibition event to increase public awareness of pool in the UK. In the first year of competition some of the WPBA's top players played alongside the men in their respective teams. These included Franziska Stark (Germany), Allison Fisher (England), Jeanette Lee (US) and Vivian Villarreal (US).

Jeanette was invited back the following year but Matchroom declined her request for a $15,000 appearance fee.

On a sadder note - Lee Tucker was a member of the European team that year. This week I learned that he has been diagnosed with lung cancer. Get well soon man!

You sir have action on that. Luke surely knows more about his part of the pool world than most but that is just one part of the world as a whole. Don't believe me have Luke show up to Derby and make some lines.

To paraphrase that classic line from the great American epic "Smokey and The Bandit" : "Just how smart you are depends on which part of the world you are standing in."

Yes I do know Luke and consider him a very bright man. The hyperbole of your statement is a little ridiculous though.

I still fail to understand how CW is chosen*. I can see him making a list of the top 25...perhaps, but that is a lotta 'no-thank-yous' before he gets the nod.

*the mutual back-scratch is certainly a theory. If so, then what does CW give in the deal?

That's so sad. Did you hear that Sid Waddell has also been diagnosed with cancer. :frown:

I love the hype on the Mosconi Cup website by Matchroom. Dennis Hatch is so fully of joy. He really epitomizes what team spirit is all about: MatchroomSport.com.

The MatchroomPool website is really interesting. So many cool articles, and it's easy to navigate ----> MatchroomPool.com.

The truth of the matter is that this did not happen.
Matchroom considered a number of contenders for the position of non playing captain.
It is not a coaching position so all the arguments on here about coaching ability are superfluous.
What the teams need is a motivator and in the end only two names were left on the list.
The three surviving US team players from last year were then asked to choose their captain and that is how Charlie got the job.

The notion that Johnny Archer and Shawn Putnam leaned on Barry Hearn or Matchroom is laughable.
These players know how futile that would have been - they would have been enjoying the comforts of home while the Mosconi Cup was happening.
At least the ABP have not tried punching above their weight on this one.

So there you have it - no conspiracy, no muscle flexing. It cannot be a surprise that two of the three players would choose their manager to be with them.

And there it is. Matchroom wasn't picking the most appropriate candidate. They were choosing who JA wanted. Simple, and easy to understand.

Thanks for the clarity.

lol. If selecting CW as USA team captain is any example of his PR skills, he needs to relearn the definition of "hard sell."

still chuckling

From Darren Appleton on UK forum
"Think Charlie the man for job .. I'd be much happier if Earl was captain for sure as I think he be no good for team..

Other candidates Allen Hopkins,Jim Rempe , be good I think ESP rempe as he got that presence about him

I think it fair to give other people a chance ... ESP if not winning and Varner lost few times,

I really think captain is important even though not playing Johan showed that last year for team Europe helloed massive part in our success.. And I know Charlie really well I think they got the best man for job ... We will need to play our best to win am sure"

Commented Rodney Morris, who will be making his eighth appearance in Vegas; “Charlie will make a good captain. He’s helped me with my game recently, he's a good motivator, and has played in Mosconi before, so he's very familiar with the team concept.”

Johnny Archer added, “I think Charlie will bring his coaching skills to Team USA and I look forward to going after Team Europe with Charlie at the head of the team.”

seems the USA team voted CW in and has the approval of even some of Europe's Team

If Rodney and JA are on CW's Dragon player roster, then CW gets a piece of their Mosconi Cup earnings. Good choice, indeed; that is, for CW.

I remember when the UPA sent players to the World Pool Tournament in 2003. Instead of using the UPA ranking system, these players were friends of CW. He was president, so he could do what he wanted.

It's all about the almighty dollar and has nothing to do with who's the best person for the job.

AzHousePro (Mike H.) recently wrote a blog about this year's Mosconi Cup. It was written before a team captain was selected. I think it's a good read: AzHousePro's Blog.
