Charlie Williams named as Captain Team USA Mosconi Cup!

Your argument doesn't make sense. All individual sports that come together as a team all most always have a caption that can out play the players on any given day. Examples in alphabetical order:

Archery
Athletics
Bodybuilding
Badminton
Boomerang
Boxing
Chess
Croquet
Cycling
Darts
Equestrian
Fencing
Figure Skating
Golden Tee
Golf
Gymnastics
Knife Throwing
Krav Maga
Judo
Lawn Bowls
Madden Challenge
Orienteering
Pilates
Power Lifting
Rock climbing
Shooting
Skiing
Skimboarding
Snowboarding
Snooker
Squash
Surfing
Skateboarding
Swimming
Table Tennis
Taekwondo
Tennis
Tenpin Bowling
Triathlon
Wrestling

I can not respond to this at all in any fashion for obvious reasons.

I say let Charlie do his job first and then we can all say weather he passed or not, give the man a chance, maybe this is Charlies calling card, what he does best, and for who ever thinks the man cant play great, well just ask around, Charlie is a great player and has been for some time.

Gold Star of the day.

WOW, if working so much causes me to miss gems like this then I quit, effective tomorrow.

At least the Americans will have a better chance when Daz gets drunk and wakes up with Charlie poking him in the back with his little dragon.

He won't be able to make a ball on the final day he'll be so shaken.

Damn Vette, it's gay pride week somewhere for sure.

I like you H-Nut, but this argument won't hold water. I wouldn't know where to begin to refute this statement, but let's start with Golf. Do you really believe Hank Haney could beat Tiger Woods or that Greg Norman could beat Adam Scott, one of the players on his President's Cup team? Maybe once upon a time Norman was the better player, but that time has long since passed. Do you think Freddie Roach could take Manny Paquiao? That would be MURDER and Manny would go to jail!

You better think again about what you said here. You're not just wrong, you're way wrong. :nono:

Be careful, Helfert :) Norman ALMOST snapped off another Open title 2 or 3 years ago out of nowhere...which is way closer than Adam's ever been. Chris Evertt prob had something to do with that resurgence, I believe.

I think Norman can still prob beat anyone in 1 round if he clicks. Doesn't mean he's better. Kind of like how anyone can beat anyone in a short set. Norman can still play.

The Mosconi Cup has been a successful event for much longer than AZ Forums have been around.

While opinions on here attract a wide audience, contrary to some people's opinions they should not be seen as gospel.

Matchroom have made the decision and the longevity of the event shows that they are rarely wrong.

.......and they do read the Forums

LMAO,,,, the gospel??? HERE???? LMAO!!!!! Why would anyone come here who is trying to do something good?

I am betting matchroom has little or no conerns of the opinions here. In fact they probably share the opinions of most of the good players.

I can't believe nobody has brought up the US dumping to Europe!!

i don't agree with their choice of a captain either. I don't even understand the thinking, but it is what it is. I only hope he is capable and can handle it. It all could end up quite embarrassing.
As far as A and pool goes, I think A is viewed as a problem rather than a solution.
BTW, where is BlackJack??

Vette, without an illustrated PhotoShop your post is no good.... I understand you're busy but we expect much more from you.

Arguments can be made both ways. Boxing is a bad example. I should have deleted a few of the sports after my google search and copy / paste of individual sports.

The main point is individual sports that come together as a team sport is way different that team sports in general. All most always the Captain named is a champion of the given sport.

All I can say is on any given day Fred Couples, Captain of the 2011 President's Cup can shoot the nuts off of any of the players if they have an average day.

Food for thought

not that there are many decisions to be made in the MC, but would you trust CW to make decisions in the best interest of Team USA in their quest to win the Cup, or to make decisions in the best interest of Dragon Promotions, CW, UPA, ABP, etc.?

Damn... It feels like someone just took a crap in my cereal! Charlie Williams is like a thorn in billiard worlds side.

GO EUROPE! Much love from New Jersey! Woot woot! I am TOTALLY routing against "Team U.S.A" this year.

I'm prolly gonna boycott it too. Who wants to start a boycott the mosconi cup poll? A message should be sent that we the pool community won't tolerate politics and bull**** in our passion.

Occupy AZ has begun

I wouldn't go as far as rooting for Team Europe.
I am more than a little disappointed in the decision for Captain tho.
I always liked Nicky and think other than him, there were many more obvious choices.

I guess that in the spirit of giving everyone the benefit of doubt and a chance, it is what it is and isn't going to change.

Someone mentioned that the APB got their man a pay check and considering
Charlies involvement with them, I can't help but think there was a little underhandedness in this. But then, considering the APBs track record thus far, Surprise, Surprise.

I would have gone with Jay Helfert or even Phatboy before Charles. And thats not intended as a put down to either.
I just believe that either of them have the abilty to put the team together better than CW.

I can't completely boycott it...

I was thinking of going this year and watching in person, but now I'm on the fence...

Either way I've gotta route on Team USA and watch the stream at least...

I've been known for doing a play by play here on AZ for those who can't watch the stream due to being at work etc...

I usually get a lot of green for it... Now I'm afraid if I do it, I'll get red....:(

Yup, the drive-by press release is imminent. In the background and around the corner, I hear the SmartCar with the air-chiseled exhaust pipes, air-powered shocks being lowered to a couple inches off the ground, and loud boom-boom music, revving its engine...

:p

I was thinking of something more like this:

Why Can't Pool Get a Break

The news that Charlie is the Team Captain is disturbing.

There are so many great players that could have been chosen.
I am not sure why Matchroom Sports wanted to choose someone controversial. Surely they knew this was going to happen.

Sorry XXX, but are you going to join Dragon Promotions next?

Didn't have the heart to spell your name.
I appologize for the comment as you are one of the good guy's, Barney

As I said in my previous post - AZ Forums are not the source of all knowledge. I read that 'the majority' oppose this decision - says who? A couple of dozen hardliners who are not CW fans doesn't give them the mandate to dictate to the experienced promoters that are Matchroom.

Charlie would not have been my No1* choice but he is more than capable of doing a good job. How many of his critics have added to the sum total of the game like he has.

* That would have been JoeyA. He would kick them out if they did not conform and respect the nation that they should be honored to represent.

No one is saying what is said here is gospel.

However, when it comes to the Mosconi Cup in this country this forum does represent the hardcore pool aficionados that have more than a passing interest in the event. The rest of pooldom in the USA wouldn't recognize the names on the teams. They know Minnesota Fats, Jeanette Lee (they probably don't even know her real name and just know of "The Black Widow"), Willie Mosconi, and maybe Efren and Earl. That's it.

What you see reflected here are the opinions of those knowledgeable about the sport. They are the ones that log on and later on go to their local rooms where people not inclined to hash things out on the internet ask them, "So what's going on?" Or, they just go ahead and share the latest news. And that, my dear gospel loving friend, is what most folks would recognize as the opinion leaders in any given community.

So no, it ain't gospel. But if you're looking for disciples to spread the good word amongst pool players in this country, this might be a good place to look. Or maybe if you just wanted an accurate read from the only group of pool players in the US who even know what the Mosconi Cup is...

I can see it now, people in the stand with signs, with Charlie's face that say, "sex offender".
