Road Trip to New Orleans - thanks to JoeyA

I just returned from an extended road trip, and wanted to report on my visit to New Orleans a couple of weeks ago.

I spent a week sampling the cuisine and music of the French Quarter. It was unbelievably good. The better places CARE about the food.

I also was the recipient of some true southern hospitality - thanks to JoeyA for steering me to several unbelievably good restaurants. He also was gracious enough to taxi me around, and we ended up two nights at Buffalo Billiards in Metairie.

What a GREAT pool hall (I wish we had something like it in Indy :frown::frown:). Though smoking is permitted, the ventilation was adequate. Lots of tables, mostly 9 footers in decent condition. Lots of players, plenty of opportunities to match up if you wanted. Nice bar area with television (streaming from the U.S. Open the nights I was there).

Something you NEVER see in Indy was a "race to 1" Nine Ball tourney on the big tables. TONS of players entered, the poorer players received a little handicap. It was rewarding to see beginning players trying their hand at the big tables instead of the crappy barboxes proliferating like rabbits elsewhere.

It looked like a place where proficiency and skill were valued and rewarded.

It was really nice getting to play some with JoeyA. He's a great player, and very respected in New Orleans (all week people were coming by asking how I knew him, telling me how good he is). We had some great discussions on pool - he is a true student of the game (and I'm trying hard...), and even got in some one-pocket and Nine Ball (not my areas of expertise:smile:).

Thanks to JoeyA - I can't wait to return to the Crescent City. I will stay longer the next time.

I just hope someone sent you to eat at Coop's Place. If not, you need to fire them all as friends.

Nice....but your killing me:frown:. I had a trip planned for this area and it fell through, I was going to meet up with HU :cool:and was going to try and meet Joey also but it was not to be. there are a few others that reside in that pool mecca and it will be only a matter of time before I get to the Big Easy. I like pool but Cajun cooking is also high on my bucket list.

Damnit!!!! I didn't go there; but my rule is go ANYWHERE that someone thinks is great. While our tastes may be different, it is always worth a try.

Where is it, and what kind of food? I'll be returning.

P.S. - EVERY place I ate was superior so I will be able to keep my friends.

Unfortunately, I don't read everything that gets posted on the Main Forum. Glad to see you had a good time. Real cute about the how did you know JoeyA? :D

Come back and visit any time!

COOP's place is 3 blocks from Cafe Du Monde. I'll let you take me there next time. ;)

I'm jealous. I want to come. :p

My daughter went to N'orleans last year, and she brought me back some samples from Cafe Du Monde. If you're going to drink that chicory coffee, best be prepared to put a lot of cream in it. It's great, as long as you add that cream. :D

Actually, my daughter is flying back down there next week. She's going on a cruise with her childhood friend for a week. The Norwegian Cruise, I think it is called. I'm nervous about those big boats. :embarrassed2:

Don, didyou go to Draco's? We went there and hadthe best Chrbroiled Oysters ever and Joey took Nick to the hood forthe rice and beans,. I am looking for a reason to go back allthe time and Joey is a great host. Didyou meet "LocknLoad"? :P)

Keith knows his way around N'Orleans but you'd have more fun coming by yourself. :D The only time I drink coffee & chicory is when friends come into town and we go to Cafe DuMonde. You're right about the cream necessity. :D

It was not rice and beans for Nick. Nick got the real deal down in the hood. I know he was a little scared but it turned out all good. :D

In the French Market directly across from from Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville.

The place is kind of seedy, but aren't they sometimes the best. I highly recommend the taste plate which includes jambalaya, gumbo, and probably the best fried chicken I've ever had.

I will be in Indianapolis on January 13-15 and hope to catch up with you then.
