I just returned from an extended road trip, and wanted to report on my visit to New Orleans a couple of weeks ago.
I spent a week sampling the cuisine and music of the French Quarter. It was unbelievably good. The better places CARE about the food.
I also was the recipient of some true southern hospitality - thanks to JoeyA for steering me to several unbelievably good restaurants. He also was gracious enough to taxi me around, and we ended up two nights at Buffalo Billiards in Metairie.
What a GREAT pool hall (I wish we had something like it in Indy :frown::frown
. Though smoking is permitted, the ventilation was adequate. Lots of tables, mostly 9 footers in decent condition. Lots of players, plenty of opportunities to match up if you wanted. Nice bar area with television (streaming from the U.S. Open the nights I was there).
Something you NEVER see in Indy was a "race to 1" Nine Ball tourney on the big tables. TONS of players entered, the poorer players received a little handicap. It was rewarding to see beginning players trying their hand at the big tables instead of the crappy barboxes proliferating like rabbits elsewhere.
It looked like a place where proficiency and skill were valued and rewarded.
It was really nice getting to play some with JoeyA. He's a great player, and very respected in New Orleans (all week people were coming by asking how I knew him, telling me how good he is). We had some great discussions on pool - he is a true student of the game (and I'm trying hard...), and even got in some one-pocket and Nine Ball (not my areas of expertise:smile
.
Thanks to JoeyA - I can't wait to return to the Crescent City. I will stay longer the next time.
