From the Derby City Forum -- The Winner of the Louie Roberts Award is Simply Amazing

What a shame it is that Greg and/or Fred's good names are being questioned about this year's award.
Thank JAM. Too much cheerleading will make people think I'm some sort of an angel. LOL!!!!

The complaints I hope are focused on understanding the process. The false claims are my only concern just for the fact that if I can squash a rumor, I will. If the complaints bring about a better method for the future, I'm all for that, too.

Most of the complaints, it's clear that many people simply thought someone else would win. Everyone knew what a tight race would bring , so it is what it is. Even landslides bring this on.

Had Tony Coleman not won, the people who voted for him would have just been swapped into this thread in place of the other posters.

Congrats Jenny on 20,000

At least, I think? I don't spend as much time here as I used to either. But, it was good to see a post from you this morning. Diana Hoppe, posted a great pic of Keith on Facebook. He still has a ton of fans out here in the pool world. Hope all is going well for you two.

Hear, hear.

You hit the nail right square on the head with this remark, and it has resonated with me personally. Some have selective memory when it comes to those who try to do good things for the betterment of pool. :(

I'm tired of the brown-nosed Gangsta pool gigolos, Sasquatch testicle danglers, blue-blooded purists who believe gambling sucks, egomanics who demand respect because of their deep pockets, and globetrotting organizational members getting a free ride to international events when pro players, the very ones they are supposedly going to watch, can't rub two nickels together to even compete on a professional level. Something is wrong with this picture, as I see it, in today's pool world.

This is my 20,000th post on this pool forum, one which used to bring a lot of joy to me each and every morning of my life. Today, I can barely tolerate reading the words, but, truth be told, I just wanted to catch up on the DCC smut. :p

FWIW, Greg Sullivan, probably the most generous pool promoter today in these United States, is the most giving person I've ever met in this pool world. He'd give anybody the shirt off his back to make things happen for the betterment of pool.

And poor Fred is only trying to assist Greg in his vision of keeping the Louie Roberts A&E Award as an annual tradition. Greg is not as talented as Fred when it comes to navigating on the Internet, I would surmise, and Fred is trying to help a friend. I know Greg appreciates it. What a shame it is that Greg and/or Fred's good names are being questioned about this year's award.

May you all enjoy Gobblers Knob on this fine day. :)

A better method might be to let people cast there votes in person regardless of when they leave. Get them to leave some sort of email or phone number and after the event you can contact them to confirm there vote as it's possible after they leave something may happen that would change their vote. No confirmation, no vote.

It's more work but that should certainly get you more than a 39 vote sample size. especially if you make sure the votes come to you or someone you designate to avoid any type of funny business, that's why the confirmation step is necessary.

Just a suggestion, it may or may not help out at all.

JAM, nice to see you post - with much passion at that. I am one who has bemoaned the choice, but there was only one negative comment toward Fred and it was immediately removed. Everyone loves what Greg does (and Fred for helping). Obviously from your post, you were not well-informed of the happenings at this year's DCC. There were only 39 voters (therein lies the problem), and about 20% of them have posted here. None of those voted for Tony Coleman at all. He would not even make the top 4 on the list.

No system is perfect and we cannot fault anyone but ourselves for not encouraging more voting. It is just that Tony's "Action and Entertainment" could get the last 5 for $40,000 from two of the other guys on the list. I appreciate your support of the top players, but if they want to win an "Action and Entertainment" award they have to get in action. They just did not this year.

I don't think any of those people post here. ROTFL

Good suggestion. 20 of the 39 votes came from votes in person at the Derby. Five changed their votes before I left on Sunday. A bunch of people actually said that they'd rather not vote because they didn't watch enough of the action. I got the full range.

Damn, you didn't count me and klatts vote for david parker? :(

I know DP made plenty of bets and staked plenty of games for sure he should of been a contender
.
What???? David Parker???

I tried to make an honest game with him, (where he gives me the 5 and the crackels on the barbox) and he had nuttin for me... He wouldn't even gamble wit me when he has the NUTZ.

:-) ;-)

Shawt Bus

Save it. LOL

LOL!!! David Parker was on the list until the last day!

Watch for him next year!

DP and Bumper should of been on that list for voting.

Fred - since I initiated this thread. Be clear that I have no issues with you. You do a thankless job.

I may have missed it but I don't see anyone in this thread being emphatic that Tony Coleman was a good choice. And the people that are upset with the choice it is more on a global impression of the player rather than what he did or did not do over the past 10 days of the DCC -- however the feeling is that he fell below the bar for those 10 days as well for action/entertainment compared to others. I understand that has nothing to do with the voting process but it is what it is. But like I said, Tony Coleman fits in nicely with some of the recent winners so carry on til next year. It is just the wonderful world of pool today.

Maybe the award should be changed to the Action, Entertainment, Integrity and Honesty Award. Oh, wait, that won't work...sorry

I gave Fred my vote at Derby and I voted for Chris Gentile. I think he was the best choice with JK being a close second.

I watched Tony running around while I was there and he was involved in a lot of action but I didn't know to what extent. Is he the best choice for the award this year? Not IMO, but unfortunately I am only one voice out what should have been many more votes.

As has been stated many times, if people will actually take part and vote their choice then this may happen with less frequency. 39 votes is silly, there were that many people in the line at the ice cream shop......

Maybe, there should be a large banner placed in the action room to bring more attention to the award and how it is given.

The biggest issue here is being missed! The guys putting in the time and effort to carry on this tradition aren't reading between the lines. Everyone is saying it but indirectly instead of taking a stand. This is what's wrong with our country and has been a Cancer in the pool world for 50 years !!

The issue is the last two years this award has been given to questionable Character. There has been a lack of Integrity around pool for way too long! Maybe a lie detector test should be given to the award winner asking one question " Have you been a part of misleading the rail or dumping a stake horse in the last 2 DCC tournaments you attended." If they answer with a positive NO they are not only looked up to for winning this award but also for trying to clean up the game !! We could just go back two years because anyone that has changed should also be commended !! This award is worth a lot of money so what if every one up on that banner stream was admired for taking a stand while still showing Action and Entertainment?

If anyone is paying attention to pool you will notice every generation of pool players have less stake horse to help them survive. There were way more Stake Horses 30 years ago !!! We have run so many good gamblers away even myself for 5 years because of the lack of Honesty and Character. Pool is paying for it's choices like any other industry that conducts themselves in this fashion. We need the people making choices to be a part of saving this sport. If you also noticed, there are many Champions that don't gamble a lot and it's because of what it has done to the game.

Since this thread is so busy and I feel that this issue is SO important I just started a new thread on Action Room as well

I'm one of the guys on the other side that can speak for the Stake Horses because I lived it. I've staked 50 pool players in my life and now I stake a hand full. I've been lied to, dumped, stolen from, and taken advantage of many times! I know many big gamblers in Georgia and SC that feel the same way and you never see them anymore. Stake Horses have always been a part of pool and really allowed guys who chose this as a vital part of there income to have opportunites to make money. Look around guys, they're fading out quickly. My point is we need people to take a stand !! What good is it if 39 people voted and 20 have been a part of questionable behavior rescently. If you start recognizing Good then maybe change will happen. This has nothing to do with me and this award but all about Pool, which is what most people on this site enjoy. I'm going to be fine regardless because pool is about 5% of my leisure interest. There are many that rely on Pool as there lively hood and if we don't find a way to kill the Cancer it will continue to decline!! Why do you think Stake Horses have fallen out and investors have come and gone. It's because you can't market something that's dying and anyone that get's Cancer is usually heading in that direction.

Take my comments however you choose but know it's how I feel and I represent a group of guys that can inject money or seek other avenues to do so. I also speak from experience. I have been asked to dump repeatedly in the last 5 years even by Champions all you guys reveer. It doesn't matter how much I lose, I told anyone that has ever approached me about something so disgusting what I thought of it and what I thought of them for asking. You want ever have to worry about that with me. What you do have to worry about is more people like me going away because of it. If you hear anyone doing such please take a stand for what's right !!! The dumping that went on last year was disgusting and the pool fans that I'm speaking to now ( the rail ) are the ones hurt the most. I wish Pool the best but I'm glad I don't have to rely on it's current state to survive. Desperate people do desperate things so we have to do our part to clean it up and allow the pool players out there opportunities to survive. GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL !!!

Would you care to elaborate on the portion of where you said 39 voted and 20 had been part of recent questionable behavior? Maybe I'm wrong but as one of the 39 that voted I take offense to that statement. Even more so because you were my second choice after Danny Smith. Help me out if I missed the mark. Thanks

NO NO .... I wasn't saying that at all. I was implying what if, that's all. Sorry for the confusion.

Hand the ballots out at the ticket window? Hang a duplicate banner of the prior years winner upstairs in the action room with info on how to vote??

I was there 2 days before the event to 2 days after and the Louie Roberts was the last thing on my mind so I didn't think to inquire as to where to vote.... After seeing only 39 voted I guess I should have taken the time to figure out how to vote....

Excellent Idea!
