From the Derby City Forum -- The Winner of the Louie Roberts Award is Simply Amazing

Honesty

For those who don't know the cornerman, I can state that he is beyond reproach. I appreciate that he takes the time to create this 'sliver' of excitement for our industry. I applaud Fred and hope that he continues to deliver this great service to us all.
Appreciate him!!!

Freddie, I still want to thank you for the time you put in to do this award.............and chatting with me during the matchs.......OTB

It's a Borda-3 system. And not everyone put up 3 names. It has always been optional. Some people put two names. Some even put four. Sorry, I stop at three and it's clear.

I will repeat that I was going to be sick announcing this since it was so close. With every question that comes up, I get sicker.

Maybe I should just not bother answering, but I think I need to answer or else the whole idea of above board voting will go out the window.

Fred is a good guy who puts in his time without pay to help make this award happen. Usually there is a clear cut favorite, but not this year. I know Tony was in action quite a bit (every night) and he is a deserving winner. Gentile also provided good high stakes action on several occasions.

P,S. I voted for J Rock (TRUE!). I told Fred it was close but he provided good high stakes action and was entertaining as well. Jason may not like me because I criticized him, but imo he was most deserving of the award this year. Louie was a close friend of mine and like Jason he would make a bad game rather than have no game at all :). I couldn't tell you who any other voters were, I didn't ask.

Damn, you didn't count me and klatts vote for david parker? :(

What???? David Parker???

I tried to make an honest game with him, (where he gives me the 5 and the crackels on the barbox) and he had nuttin for me... He wouldn't even gamble wit me when he has the NUTZ.

:-) ;-)

I agree with this as well.

How can all of you be right??? Somebody has to win. It won't matter how the votes are done (and sure, I can change it back to a silent vote where I pick the voters) people will still complain. And I'm sure enough complaining will simply result in the award being dropped.
This is not a knock or attack but how did you get to be the action award spokesman, just out of curiosity?

I did see Tony in a few matches but it seemed like there were other players in just as many if not more. Its hard to keep track with the layout of the tables and all the different hours of play. I would have thought Gentile and Richie would be up there, higher than Tony from what I witnessed and heard from many others. There is no difference in the Action Award winner and the winner of a political election, and everyone knows those are not always on the up and up. Not saying the AW isnt legit but it always seems like there is controversy surrounding it. If there were only 39 people who voted, thats a sad situation indeed. This should be a wake up call to everyone who has a problem with this years winner. I would venture to say that in the years to follow, the voting will pick up a considerable amount. Voting by the public is not just to elect or award a certain person, its also to keep other people from winning.....

But now to the disgusting fact. When Scooter said I should get the reward, the response was he wasn't here all week so he doesn't qualify. WOW!

If this is true then its a shame. Winning or losing you showed more gamble, money wise than probably anyone there. Sometimes not being the declared winner is not much different than actually winning.....

J Rock - you got ignored again just like they ignored you when you asked to bet more in the action room.

Press Release: 1 February 2012 - Louie Roberts Action & Entertainment Committee

In what has been the tightest race in its history at the Derby City Classic, Tony Coleman has emerged as the 2012 Louie Roberts Action & Entertainment Award Winner. Not only was Tony in non-stop playing action, he was a high-profile stake horse and game-maker throughout the DCC. AS a highlight, at one point Coleman was playing one-handed banks (his specialty) while side-betting per bank with a professional player determined to shark him. Always a crowd pleaser, when “Tony Banks” was making a game, a crowd was sure to form. And that’s what the Action & Entertainment award is all about.

Chicago’s Chris Gentile finished a very close second to Coleman in the overall voting. An annual fixture in the Derby City Classic, there was never a moment that Gentile wasn’t in action. Involved in a partners one-pocket match on the internet live stream early in the event, Gentile’s action match-ups continued to the very last moments of the DCC well after the tournaments were completed. Chris Gentile’s action-packed presence this year warrants recognition.

For winning this year, Tony Coleman will receive free hotel and tournament entry for life to the Derby City Classic. Additionally as with all of the past winners, Coleman’s image will be placed among the championship banners lofted high in the tournament hall at all future Derby City Classics.

Congratulations to Tony Coleman!

Sincerely,

The Action and Entertainment Committee

IMHO Richie Rich deserved it this year.......... he was constatly in big action! And he should have won it 2 years ago when it was "GIVEN" to Jeanette because of her celebrity status.

Stake,
If I remember correctly Fred was appointed by Greg Sullivan when the award was in its infancy. And seeing all the grief he is getting my hard off to him for doing the job. He does it on his own time and dime and bears the burden of the action world. And I was one of the 39 that voted.

Thanks for posting that Fred. Only 39 voters??? I hope everyone here who is discussing it at least was one of the 39. I know I was and I only voted for one guy.

That should explain everything. Tony, the four guys he roomed with, his girlfriend, his parents, and his brother-in-law-twice-removed voted for him and it was done.

We should have had more time to vote.............. at least a week or more! I'm still out on the road from the 9 days at the DCC and just happened to see this post this morning! I would have liked to vote! No wonder you had only 39 votes .......... since you cut it off after only a couple days!!!

I can't believe all the people giving Fred crap about this... all you have to do is vote people. It's not hard, just send an email from your computer, laptop, phone, ipad, your friend's phone, the hotel computer, etc. 39 votes is pathetic... there are more people *****ing about this than actually voted.

There is no scam going on, no favoritism, just votes. It's really a very simple concept...

Very well said Jamie plus Fred was actually walking around and got votes from those he knew were forum members as well. Thats how I gave my vote, person to person. It is what it is, somebody will be complaining either way, wether it was Tony Coleman or Tony Macaroni that won.
Next year, let your voice be heard and not the voice of complaining but the voice of voting.

Greg asked me. Simple as that. In those years, too many people complained (shocking) about who should have won (deja vu) and who was voting (since nobody knew). Knowing a lot of internet posters had this huge internet voice, he wanted the internet forum members who actually go to the Derby to go ahead and have the biggest say. Maybe because I've written for the industry in InsidePool or maybe because I'd written something on the action on a forum and Greg liked it, or maybe I can slop it with the mud in the forums with the best of them.

Exactly. And this is the most individual votes I've received. I do the same posts every year to AZ and 1P, so it should be no surprise to the veterans.

If this is true then its a shame.
Fortunately, it's not true.

Nice post Worminator

I saw the thread, asking for votes. I didn't spend much time in the action room, so I didn't vote. I know Richie was in there quite a bit, because when I walked by, he seemed to always be there, or in the hall talking to someone. I have known Richie for several years, and even tho we ain't best friends, I could have voted for him. I had several friends in the room I could have voted for, but, since I didn't know who was supposed to win, I didn't vote. It shouldn't be a popularity contest. Fred needs to find a few trustworthy people, who will vote accordingly, and take their votes in my opinion, or this whole concept will soon go down the river. That's a pretty good chunk of change, if you look at it over the next 10 years or so.

As for those picking on Fred, that's just sad. He posted here, asking for votes to be sent. If I recall, there was a mention of the voting, posted here when I came home just after the bank event. Regardless, they tallied the votes, and that's who won. It has been this way every year. I too, am surprised he will still want to help with this.

You make a good point Bob. This unfortunately is just another example of "no matter what, someone's going to complain." As many people know, I gave it a week in years past. But, there were too many complaints that one week is entirely too long for people to wait or remember. The announcement was coming when the rest of the world was already forgetting about the Derby and on to the next.

It's a tough decision, and the decision was made. The good news (I think it's good, but clearly others won't see it that way), was that the voting in person was in line with the email voting. The same four names came up more often, and the same top two were the same top two.

I take any thoughts and advice on how people would lilke to see this process improved via email ( LouieRobertsAE@gmail.com) . This isn't a dictatorship... welll maybe it is.

None of it even matters. I do prefer seeing the award go to guys that can actually play at the top levels though. That way its not a total waste of entry fees and what not.

Damnnn just thought about it, SVB won all that money this year and he was free rolling. Whoooo

Hear, hear.

You hit the nail right square on the head with this remark, and it has resonated with me personally. Some have selective memory when it comes to those who try to do good things for the betterment of pool. :(

I'm tired of the brown-nosed Gangsta pool gigolos, Sasquatch testicle danglers, blue-blooded purists who believe gambling sucks, egomanics who demand respect because of their deep pockets, and globetrotting organizational members getting a free ride to international events when pro players, the very ones they are supposedly going to watch, can't rub two nickels together to even compete on a professional level. Something is wrong with this picture, as I see it, in today's pool world.

This is my 20,000th post on this pool forum, one which used to bring a lot of joy to me each and every morning of my life. Today, I can barely tolerate reading the words, but, truth be told, I just wanted to catch up on the DCC smut. :p

FWIW, Greg Sullivan, probably the most generous pool promoter today in these United States, is the most giving person I've ever met in this pool world. He'd give anybody the shirt off his back to make things happen for the betterment of pool.

And poor Fred is only trying to assist Greg in his vision of keeping the Louie Roberts A&E Award as an annual tradition. Greg is not as talented as Fred when it comes to navigating on the Internet, I would surmise, and Fred is trying to help a friend. I know Greg appreciates it. What a shame it is that Greg and/or Fred's good names are being questioned about this year's award.

May you all enjoy Gobblers Knob on this fine day. :)
