APA rank & innings

Hey everyone
Last night I had my best pool match yet (in my opinion)

It was 40-40, (12-8, 8-12, 13-7, 7-13) and I was the 5th and final match.

I am currently a 5, I played against a strong 4. (38 vs 31 race)

I won the lag.
1st rack, break & run
2nd rack, 9ball break + 2 = (4)

I think I played a total of (2) defenses.

I finished the match in (11) innings. (18-2 final score)

We are looking forward to regionals but our team has already been struggling with so many high ranked players ( [3] 6's, [2] 5's, [1] 4, [2] 3's )

What are the odds of me getting bumped up to a 6 after a match like this??

I can totally see it happening. I am new to league and just started shooting pool as an adult (I just turned 22, but played ALOT of pool from ages 7-9) but from what I hear, if TWO people on our team get moved up, we're no longer eligible for REGIONALS/NATIONALS.

Anyways, just curious, and wanted to share my excitement of my good match.

Your APA rank is based on the average of your 10 best matches. If you were close to moving up anyways it could move you over the edge, the league operators don't even know what will happen until they input the match into their system.

Quit worrying about it.... you're not that good........

If you go up to a 6, you'll just have to play like a 6 or get beat. That is what the handicap rating is for.

Congrats on the well played match. If you are a new player, then more than likely you will be moved up as your skill level isnt established. Like someone said before it is determined by the average of your best 10 matches out of the last 20. 9 ball scoring I believe is based on balls made per inning after safeties are taken out of the equation. It seems as if a typical match based on skill level will result in you getting your number of points in around 20 innings. The only way you would have a problem at regionals/nationals is if you cannot stay at or below the 23 rule for five players. People get bumped up all the time so just moving up as an individual player is nothing to worry about.

Any pool league where your team gets punished for playing good is not a good pool league. I guess you'll be forced to add your grandma to the roster to keep within the 23 rule.

Your expected turns at the table to win as it were (innings - defensive shots) is going to be around 16 for nine ball. If you are consistently under that total you are probably moving up. As a 5, you are expected to make pretty much score 2.5 points per turn if you want an easy way to look at it. For each additional skill level, add roughly half a point.

Apa s/l

The "raise 2 S/L and get DQ'd" thing is during the Regional or the NTC. In nightly league play you can move up all you want (or don't want). A while back some former League Operator lost his mind and posted the Top Secret Equalizer System on line, though it wasn't up long you can still find it around if you look long enough. When you're trying to calculate your skill level and what you have to do to uh..... maintain what you believe to be your true S/L just remember the term "implied innings" or "implied score" and also that any innings beyond what you "should" shoot (as a 5 or 6 or whatever) don't count when you win

"You're not that good........"??? All I can say is WOW. Could you be a little more condescending  to this person who was obviously "caught-up" in one of the happiest moments of his/her pool career? What a downer. I guess you have an abundant list of pool accomplishments, eh???

Maniac (hopes you didn't run the newbie off)

New players often fall into the trap of listening to the old sand baggers in the league and how they keep their SL low. These are CHEATERS !!!! Don't get sucked into their black hole. Keep your chin up and play as well as you can. Have self respect. Practice - practice and continuously improve. Ever wonder why a person has been a 5 for 3 or 4 years. Because they just are not as good as they think they are. Don't be one of them.

Have a sense of humor????? I hear comments like this on league night as well as all the attempts and methods of cheating the handicap system.

I hear: Don't play me against a 6 because if I beat him, I'll go up. Keep the innings up to stay down. Don't mark defensive shots, because they make you go up. Don't win so many games in a match.

I always play to win against anyone I play.......... all the time and every time.

No one wins all the time and no one is as good as they think they are or good as they want to be.

If you go up to a 6, it's because you have played like a 6. You will have to continue to play like a 6 or you will lose.

The handicap system actually makes a person play better.

Play your game and don't worry about your Skill level.

I am a 6 in 8 ball and I want to be a 7. I know if I am a 7 I will play like a 7. (or I will lose) I don't like to lose, so I will have to practice more and improve.

I think that your previous post came out the wrong way. You have a better view of things in this post. Play to win, give an honest effort, work to improve and all that. Most people don't know where their standings are at(their 10 best of their last 20) and letting up just a little can easily lead to losses.

PQ4 - Nice playing that match. Just keep doing what you're doing and see if you can hold that 6. Chances are, it's going to take you at least a little while to go up to a 7. That'll be after all of the upcoming tournaments. And who knows, there could very well be a couple of people that drop down by then, too.

Good work, don't stop now.

Not sure that moving up in skill level is a punishment. I see rather as a better approximation of a player's current skill level. Ideally I would think that in handicapped leagues one should be winning close to 50% of the time. If one is winning 80% of the time seems they are underrated. if one wins say 10% of the time then is overrated

Hector...I feel the same way you do. Nice post!

As far as individual skill level goes, I agree with you. Regarding the team handicap (the 23 rule) it is punishment. It forces teams to forfeit matches in many instances. It practically forces teams to sandbag to keep their team intact.
