Talk to yourself???

Lately, I find myself talking to myself while at the table executing a runout (or in my case ATTEMPTING to execute one :o). I'm talking in a full voice but a rather muted one, but out loud nonetheless. I guess that unless you were standing fairly close, you wouldn't be able to understand what I was saying. I'm talking myself through the pattern, assuring myself of where I want the cueball to go and how to get it there. Sometimes after a real nice shot, I tell myself to calm down, or when I get to rolling too fast, I tell myself to slow down. I find that I can obey my thought processes better if I communicate with myself orally. Basically, I'm just thinking out loud.

Would you consider this rude/unsportmanlike behavior? Could this be considered cockiness by others? I haven't had anyone say anything about it yet but I was just wondering if any of ya'll ever do it and what kind of results you have with it, or if anyone has ever said anything negative to you about it.

Perfectly normal, I see this from time to time.

I do it all the time - and I'm not a good player. It helps me stay calm, and puts a smile on my face when I miss shots.

If it in no way effects your opponents game its fine.

someone was going to say it, might as well be me

i have been told that making love between two people is just another form of communication,
if thats true, then i guess that masturbation, is kinda like
TALKING TO YOURSELF

sorry i just had to

Brownie Mcghee would get groovin' on his acoustic guitar...and just before
he was going to make a mistake, he would say "Don't get excited, Brownie."

Dean O'Kane, a New Zealand snooker pro, would have an on-going monolog
every time he played a match....one player complained to me about it.
I told him "He doesn't talk when YOU shoot."

Thinking out loud worked pretty good for Mike Sigel.

..just make sure you save SOME english for the cue-ball...:rotflmao:

i, quite often, tell the cue ball to "STOP" but it doesn't listen! it just keeps rolling too far! :(

could be a lot worse

Talking to yourself isn't too bad although you may give away more than you want to to your opponent. Just for grins I stopped and cocked my head listening to the voices between shots a couple of times long ago, even had some arguments with them. Used to be a street person that had very heated arguments with himself gave me the idea. As expected, sharked hell out of the other player, they lost and quit playing me. :D :D :D

I wouldnt think its arrogant, but a little weird maybe. To me, any talking to myself when I'm down on a shot is the voice of the choke. First think and talk when up, then shoot when down. I dont always get it right, but it helps when I do.

I talk to myself cuz nobody else will listen to me. I think it evolved from being married to the same woman all those years. LOL

Seriously, over the years, many players have asked me to talk my way through a rack in hope of learning something about position play, getting out of trouble, key balls, safety play, etc.

These days since I don't play much anymore, most of the talking usually is toward the cue ball and goes like this:

"Oh, sh*t, OH, SH*T!"

"Whoa, Whoa, WHOA! SLOW DOWN, YOU S.O.B.!!"

If it's your inning at the table, you can talk to yourself all you want. I do it too sometimes. There's noting rude/unsportmanlike about that. If someone doesn't else doesn't like it, screw them. You're not doing anything wrong. A lot of really good players are very vocal when they play.

I dont see it as a problem.

However, if you are concerned about the other player, just make an annoucement like...."I talk to myself sometimes, during my shots, hope it doesnt bother you"

They cant seriously be mad at you after that......

I talk to myself all the time. Playing or not.
My wife is always asking me who I'm talking to, or tells me that I'm talking to myself again.
It's worse for me on the table though.
So, I'd say it's perfectly normal.

I talk to myself all the time; my lips move but I don't make any sound. If my opponent thinks I'm a little crazy all the better. :)

I don't think it's a big deal so long as it's your inning.

Dean O'Kane, there's a blast from the past...

I'm usually talking to myself as I'm leaving the table.

Maybe you're onto something....perhaps if I start talking to myself before I miss....:p

If you're winnin' you're grinnin'. It's your table when you are there. Talk if you want to. You are certainly not bothering anyone. Too bad if it is. I do not see it being inappropriate or bad etiquette.

Ask Donnie Hale.

It only bugs me (when my opponent does it) if he is naturally funny or is telling jokes. I can't play when I'm laughing.

I talk to, but I avoid questions. They just lead to conflicting answers. :embarrassed2:
