An introduction and the typical rookie question...

The "Professional" cue is two piece. I had toyed with the idea of just adding a 314/2 to it, but I can't find anyone who knows what my joint is, nor what Predator would fit it. Sorry no pics, since my camera is already in Denver.

The joint on your cue should be 3/8 in. diameter and 14 threads to the inch.
It is very common because of Herman Rambow. Many shafts from Joss,
Schon, Richard Black, many Predators...etc...will inter-mix.

But I wouldn't advise using it for modern pool...I've had a few Hoppes and
one Rambow and they tend to be the old 3-cushion billiard thinking and you
are expected to grip them very short ( near the balance point)...the butt
is just too thick.

I strongly recommend seeing Measureman and Cuesblues at Hanks.

Sounds like you'll fit in just perfect with the rest of us pool nuts.

Congrats on your dream table. Now just enjoy keeping your dream alive.

Looking forward to your posts. geno......

Welcome to the forum Bob. While in Denver, look up Measure Man (Bruce) at Hank's. He is always willing to play for a bottle of water.

Bob...Welcome to the forums! I lived in CO for 15 yrs, before moving to MT, where I lived for almost 25 yrs (I love the mountains!). Now I live in MI, but travel all over the country teaching full time. Whatever kind of cue you get, I'd scale back the price a bit (maybe look at used cues here), and spend a few bucks on some quality instruction. That will "up" your game a heck of a lot more than a new cue. BTW, there is NO reason why any cuemaker couldn't trim down the butt a little, and install a leather wrap. Some of them must just be lazy. There are some good instructors in Denver, and I travel the whole country, coming through CO at least a couple times a year (I'll be there for a week, in a few days). Good luck with whatever you decide, and all of us here are jealous of scoring a beautiful Anniversary table. Be sure to spend some money to get it set up correctly...don't go cheap here. We can steer you to a good mechanic.

Yes, I called Joss directly. Don't know whom I spoke with, but he flatly said that the SP is "an entirely different animal" and that he could not add the leather. I wanted to question him further on his response, but I had just had oral surgery, couldn't talk for beans, and just left it at that. I don't see why a skilled cue guy can't just undercut it and add a black leather wrap, but I defer to the experts here. I ain't gotta clue why...

welcome

Welcome to the forum Bob.
Looks like you are all hooked up on playing pool in denver.
I like the custom cues better but. I have heard great things about Joss cues.
Might be worth your time to find a custom cue maker there.
Its is a lot of fun seeing all the cues in there stages of being built.
And ordering in the cue of your dreams. Me they all look great.
Best of luck and welcome.
MMike ps very nice first thread , think :D green

Welcome to the Forum Bob! Sounds like you're heading for a large adventure in CO. I have several friends that have lived there and all of them say they love it!

I have an Anniversary table, too. Purchased it on eBay about 5 years ago and had a friend, who's a local table distributor, help me move it and set it up. It's a sweet table and I can tell you, you're going to love it!

After you're set up out there, and get the cue you want, I also suggest lessons. I found going to Pool School as well as private lessons from Scott Lee to the thing that has jumped my own game up and increased my enjoyment of it. Having a table at home to practice what you learn is invaluable.

Enjoy!

welcome Bob.
If you can hold off buying a cue until you get to Denver you can come to "Hanks" on a Saturday and You can try a lot of different cues that the regulars have.I don't think anyone will mind if you hit a few balls to see what you like. Just might help you decide on wrap-shaft tip, etc. And there is always some real nice used cues for sale in our group.
And of course I will buy you your first bottle of "Hanks" magic water.

Thanks for your welcome, Bruce. I've been spendin' money like a drunken sailor between the table and our new townhome. A freebie would be a welcome change!! :clapping:

That Mezz is nice, but over your aforementioned price range, plus the added cost of a smooth leather wrap would put you in the $600+ range.
I'd go with the 2 piece conversion of your existing cue as first choice.
I would then go with a butt of your choice under $200 with a joint you prefer. Purchase a low deflection shaft of your choice to fit it.
If you like the combo enough then have a smooth leather wrap put on it.
Keep in mind that the leather wrap will make the cue slightly heavier and move the balance point closer the the butt end. That might be why Joss didn't want to alter one of their SP's. Plus it's not a SP any more once you add the leather wrap.
For about $100 you could try a Players HXT and convert the wrap if you like the cue. I would not spend the extra money on the leather wrapp until you know you love the cue.

What part of Denver are you moving to? Just a rough idea would be fine.
