Can years of experience and knowledge overcome an active younger player? That was the question I put to a number of friends. It seemed that the answers were mixed. Obviously depending on the length of the race and the game were all factors. So I got to thinking about something I have wanted to do for a while and in the process of putting together a very interesting Challenge match between Nick Varner and Scott Frost. As some of you know the last couple of Challenges I have put together have been an assortment of different games and this is no different. Both Nick and Scott are on board to play this match, race to 10 1 pocket (may end up being more) race to 15 8-Ball and a race to 200 straight pool.

The scoring will be what I originally wanted with the Bad Blood event where each game won is equal to one point for the 1 pocket and the 8-Ball and then the final game will be the 14.1 and each 10 points will equal one point.

So what do you think? can Nicks years of know how and experience get the edge on a younger active player that also has tons of experience and highly regarded as a one pocket player. The races are not super long but long enough and the games are ones that take more that just being able to make balls.

Oh, looking at having some $$ in the middle of course and like the TAR matches making sure that the winner gets the largest chunk of the $$ and the loser getting an appearance fee. Love to know your thoughgts on this.

Mark,

It would be great to witness this matchup.

I for one, would be most interested to see the result of the one pocket. With a race to 10 you should witness both sides playing to their respective strengths verses having to "adjust" their strategy to accommodate a race to 3 for example.

Scott's more aggressive attacking style verses Nick's patented squeeze game? Scott obviously has the edge in the age category (read, stamina), in an extended session such as this, but it might be closer than we think.

Nick's proven 14.1 knowledge would prove a challenge for Scott, especially in a 200 pt race, although Scott's phenomenal ball making skills could allow him to strings several racks together.

The 8 ball, I think....is a coin toss.

If it's in Phoenix I would certainly be there.

Hey Bernie, thanks for your input. I am working with kolby's on this so hopefully we can do another great event in my own area again. I still have work to do and need to make sure that the prize fund is there etc. Actually if you have Rod Sands # please can you PM that to me? Looking forward to it and I am getting alot of great feedback from the people I have talked to about this.

Also I am trying to get a hold of Fast Lenny, I just left him a message and if it is at all possible I would like to free stream this match. I am sure that Lenny and I can figure something out on that. Just FYI so if you see this Lenny give me a call, thanks

Interesting! Since the max a player can win in one pocket is (probably) 10 and you can win up to 20 in 14.1 - I think that plays in Nick's favor a bit. It's more likely for someone to have a hugely lopsided victory in 14.1 than the other games. Nick could get spanked 10-6 and 15-10, but then win 14.1 200-105 and win the match.

This point system heavily weights 14.1 - was that on purpose to perhaps level the field a bit?

Can't wait for it to go down - do have a time-frame in mind? Nice job Mark!

At first look it seemed to me Scott 1-hole, Scott 8-ball, and close on the 14.1. But it depends how Nick is playing now and what the rules and the table are. IMO if Nick hasn't lost too much this could come down to who wins the 8-ball. They play two very different styles. It will be very interesting to say the least. Thank you and Lenny? in advance for the free stream and please put a donate button for paypal on the stream. Johnnyt

Thanks KK9, yeah the 14.1 will be held last and so it will go down to the last day most likely. Thats the idea and it makes every game in 8-Ball and 1 pocket important. Obviously you want to be going into the last set with as many points under your belt as possible and even then if someone runs 100 it can swing the game in either direction. Remember the Bad Blood event when Archer ran like 140 and then Earl ran 140 something right after? it made it more exciting even for the people that didn't play 14.1.

As far as time frame I would like to get it done and ready asap. I am working with the pool room to get a date set and then I need to get sponsorship together for the prize fund. This way I can get the livestream out there for free. Thanks for the questions and feel free to ask or suggest anything.

Thanks JohnnyT, I will have to see about a donate button. From what I have seen I think Bigtruck tried that and didn't get much traction. Maybe it would be easier to do some kind of drawing.

IDK, for what it is worth, I would much rather see DVDs of these events. Have TAR and other people that are putting on and shooting these matches no longer recording them? If they can also be recorded I am hapy to purchase DVDs and that could help the cause.

I like Frost in the IP no question. i would have to lean towards Frost in 8B as well. 1 point for 10 balls, lets do some math.
Lets say it is Scott over Nick only 8-7 in 8 ball and 7 over 3 in 1P that means before ther SP
it is
15-10 and Nick would have to be 50 balls over Scott... I guess that is possible. Interesting format for sure.. I look forward ot this.

You couldn't have picked 3 better games IMO. I'm bored to death with the "paint by number" games.

I love the idea, I love the choices for players and I"m sure it would be close and interesting.

Format

Seems pretty good, but a race to 10 in 1 hole could take a long long time, especially if Nick turns it into a wedge game.

From what I've read, the cost in time and materials makes creating DVD's a hassle, and has a limited sell through. Just my guess, mind you...

The match sounds great, Mark! Hope it comes together for you.
