My freinds have been coming over more and more lately to play some after hour money games and I figured since I gotta stay up late charging them a small sum wouldnt be out of line. Not only for my time and the wear and tear on the table but I usually provide free alcohol too. (no ones getting really wasted anyways since theyre playing, which is why I dont really mind)
So whats the best way to do it, or how is this usually done? A set fee per player? a percentage of the winninngs? A percentage of the bet from each guy?

Thanks AZ

This could be good.

Garage? Living room?

Have a wife? keeper variety or disposable?

Have they offered something up in the past? How do they take rejection?

How do you avoid being the Awhole in this deal?:(

What's your definition of friend?

I dont have a solution, just questions.

I think there is no standard way. How about: loser of each game puts a quarter into the jar. Any ball onto the floor costs a quarter. Or a dollar since you're providing the refreshments.

15% of the action........thats what I would charge......:grin-square:.

Yeah, rake the pot just like poker, 10% of total bet sounds good but should be negotiable relative to the stakes too. And they should show up with at least a case of good beer. Cold.

charge for alcohol

It is illegal to charge for alcohol dont even go there shit happens and ppl get pissed when they lose.

I would explain that its there turn to stock the bar.
and help pay for the cloth and buy snacks.

First

What kind of betting are they doing? $2,$5,$10,$20, or $50, $100 sets, or are they doing $500 and $1,000 sets???

Personally, I would have to have at least $50 for the night, if they are playing big money, then a $100.

It really depends on what they're playing for. If it's small stuff, then I would just ask them to chip in for drinks. If they're playing bigger sets, then I would negotiate a percentage from the winner. If you aren't sure what percent to ask for, just start with an amount that will get you a little cash on the side, and at the same time keep them as friends. I think 10% is a fair amount.

If you do take a percentage from teh winner, just make sure they can't quit at even :)

Get as much as you can. This type of stuff won't last very long anyway and you have to replace your cloth at some point and you have expenses like electricity etc.

How long will they play each session? At what point will you tell them to leave or is it ok for them to stay all night? Tell them to bring their own food and drinks.

Get a % of the winnings each game/set.

Are they really good friends? Will they bring sweaters/backers? Do you trust strangers in your house?

Charging is a bad idea.......once they pay, then they have the right to dictate terms.....they become a customer and not a friend.....

The winner should be donating 10% of the take as a show of respect to the house......professional gamblers will get this, but most folks won't........if nothing else, you run a little set up.....have a buddy gamble with you while they are there, you lose, and then he kicks back 10% in front of the group.......a little verbal, "thanks for a good game and hosting....as always, house gets 10%, appreciate the table and beverages".....sometimes people just need a good example....

Tell them up front you want 10% of the winning action....Make a house minimum 50 or 100 dollar or better sets..I'm not staying up late to watch 10 dollar races to 7

Make a house kitty get a box, bucket or whatever put a sign on it says house gets 10% of winners share. If they don't like to bad...Where else are they going to go if there is no open 24 hour action spot

Interesting question. Friends and guests in my home don't pay to play pool, imbibe, or eat my food. I do have a pay toilet though.

All kidding aside, friends (mine anyway) do not make a habit of coming over uninvited. So I would either treat them as guests in my home or tell them tonight is not a good night to come over. If they show up unannounced then they are entitled to be received in whatever mood you are in.

Now, if the players are very good and the action is really big, let them play for free, charge for seats at the rail, and stream it PPV.:grin-square:

Either be a friend and just let them use it, or ask them to be a friend and knock it off.

Personally, if I were not the person gambling I would not let it happen.

I have a nice table and if someone did call me to come over and gamble with someone else, I would say no.

I was going to say I would probably say no, but after I thought about it, I am pretty sure I would say no.

Not sure I understand why my house should become a pool hall.

I responded to the first post; however, after reading the remainder of the posts I see I am in the minority; however, I am ok with that too.

I have people that call me late night sometimes ... I tell them ahead of time that if the call goes to voicemail don't you dare come over ... but aside from that, before they even show up I let them know the rules. If they are coming over after hours because they are looking to try to make some money that both parties had best post the cash and I pull 10% before the match even starts. I MORE THAN WELCOME them not coming to my house and finding someplace else to play after closing. I didn't get a table because I was running a pool hall but I also don't want to block people's action. They need to respect the fact that I am providing a table, location, and drinks well beyond the time any other place they could find. I would have no issue with them going elsewhere, I am doing this as an inconvenience for myself, hence the charge.

If it is any bit of an inconvenience for you, charging a percentage of the action is reasonable. Letting people walk all over you just because you have a table at home and they don't is crazy.
