Random Philippine musings

I did the same quite a while ago. Not much comes out of his mouth worth reading.

AZ ough to publish the top ten "ignored" posters just to recognize their efforts :)

How do you find out if you are on someone's ignore list?

I know I get on some peoples nerves but I'm usually just kidding around.

I hope no one is ignoring me..

A little update on the action scene the last few days. One Side is only a few blocks from Robinsons Place mall where the tournament is taking place, so many of the pros have been going there to play in their free time. The big action has all revolved around Shane (what else is new). In order he has played Jeff De Luna (he of the monster break) 9-Ball and lost, Dennis Orcollo One Pocket and lost, De Luna Ten Ball - win, Roberto Gomez Ten Ball - win, and last night Carlo Biado Ten Ball - win. Shane has been in action every night this week! The sets have ranged from 40 to 60K in pesos (you figure it out). Serious games over here.

They LOVE Shane here, he isn't afraid to get in the box with anyone, maybe the only foreign player other than Darren Appleton who will. Shane is followed everywhere he goes and the filipinos turn out to watch his matches. He is probably the most popular foreign player in the P.I. I watched his match with Biado last night (a very dangerous player) and let me tell you Shane flat BROUGHT IT! It was a Race to 21 for over a G note and deep in the match Shane trailed 15-12. That's when he reached down and played some awesome pool, running out one difficult rack after another. I think he ran the last four racks from 17-17 to close it out! When Shane lowers the boom you can forget about it. This young man who happens to be America's best tournament player, also is one helluva money player. A rare combination, something he has in common with Buddy Hall and Johnny Archer, who were his predecessors.

P.S. He doesn't have (or need) a backer for these sets either. Shane is his own man, in control of his own destiny.

Hi Jay

I was there last night and we didnt meet :(, i left early around 9pm, when i left Shane was playing very bad in the first 5 racks giving all those rack to Carlo. And yes you're right that Shane is the only player here who will play with anyone, he has a big heart and a fighter inside him.
Your last few words, you right too, here some Filipinos try to pool all resources then go for the big fight, like last night they were playing for 44,000 my friend bet half of it already, and some from Django side. :):):)

Pangit said..."Midnight Rambler in Barrio Barreto. It's a big place...right on the beach...Steve from London who owns the fish chips shop as a sub-let within in the "business" comes up to me and says, "I've Closed the Chippy Shop"."

I was in those places 2 days ago...haha. I didnt play on the tables there...they looked to be in pretty bad condition. I did play a few hours on the tables at Harleys and Johans. They were ok, but speed on outside tables is hard to get use to. Are those Brunswicks I see only in the Philippines some fake Chinese copies?

Im back in AC now...heading into Manila for the World Cup final action. I return on Sept 11 to boring Calif.

Enjoying my trip here....as usual.

Cheers
Bob

It's not only the rails that make a Diamond play differently, but that's a big part of it. They happen to be excellent tables that take a little adjusting too, especially the angle of deflection off the rails and the bank angles (they play shorter than a Gold crown for instance). The pros who are here that have more time on the Diamonds are at a definite advantage.

I will not be playing any underwater pool now or in the future, quite happy to hit balls on dry land.

Very true that Diamond tables play differently compare to Brunswick table, Jay you should try out the 2 Diamond tables at Hermes, both same Diamond but it plays differently.
Some of the Taiwanese and Chinese says that this table will play good on a constant temperature, if humidity arise, Diamond table is very hard to play. And for them, they seldom came across these tables in their country so they have a lot of adjustments to made.
just my 2 cents Jay

It is good if Jay or Raj is in there commentating with the local guys. If the local guys would listen, it would help them very much.

Jay "I think he will go for a cross corner bank" Beboy "No I think it will be just a regular bank Jay"!

Right on my friend. I was at Hermes last night after spending the day with Dennis Orcollo and his lovely family. His wife Ronah kept the food coming all day long as we relaxed and watched the matches on TV. It was my day off, returning today to do the Finals. Couldn't believe that USA escaped after blowing an 8-2 lead. The two kids from Taiwan are awesome, showing no fear whatsoever against the favored English team. Taiwan is a pool rich country with gobs of talent, just like the PI.

We went to One Side late last night after bidding farewell to Perry at Hermes. Marcus Chamat was in action as was Django against Gomez, and Carlo was playing some young gun named Levan a long Rotation race. Levan is just one more in the seemingly endless stream of pool superstars that I see every time I'm over here. Shane was sitting front and center, a smile on his face, with no challengers. Ronnie Alcano was there, as was Jundal Mason, plus the usual cast of suspects that one can see on any day at One Side. Dennis flitted around from game to game trying to make side bets and hopefully get into some action himself. I never saw Dennis and Shane acknowledge each others presence. The two big guns in the room just making space for each other. There is definitely a pecking order here and when your on top there is deference accorded to you.

I did find out that earlier in the week Darren and Chris Melling took on Roberto and Carlo in some partners 9-Ball with the Brits prevailing. Didn't stay that late (left at Midnite), it had been a long day for me already and I'm working tomorrow.

It's always nice to see you Jay, well nice watching the 1st semi-final but things just didnt go USA way, like what we discuss it might boils down to Rodney's games after all.
As of writing this, i am seeing an all European Finals : Poland vs Finland

This is funny. I have lot's of stories.

I was the Admin Officer at a rather large Aircraft Intermediate Repair Facility at PMTC/NWAS/NAS, Point Mugu, just north of Malibu. About 10-15 years ago.

Every new check in's Service Record came across my desk along with a little interview and a signature on the check-in sheet.

I get this Service Record "Miles St Laurent" I'm expecting some sort of Caucasian, maybe of French origin? I initially didn't review all the way down to his Original Enlistment papers. In he comes for his check in interview...and a short Pinoy from Abra walks in, speaks little English. The Skipper XO, CMC, and I got a good laugh out of that one. I remember it as clearly as Shellback initiation, Chiefs initiation...or any other Naval rite of passage.
When a person enlists in the Military you can legally change your name. He could have chosen something that people would believe?

Sorry, I missed the punch line. This is funny?

It's the craziest country in the world..and I've been to dozens. First off..."Honey Mo" and I go to the heart of Olongapo City for some shopping. Make a few purchases...a couple new suitcases. She and her 18 year old sister are going back to Bacolod to visit their extended family in a few weeks.

A couple young Pinoys walk up behind me and one grabs me be the shoulder and say's "Hi Dad". Don't be touching me secondly. An obvious reference to how young and sexy my honey mo is. I stare them down. Then pull my wallet out of my pocket and start peeling off 500 Peso notes. Ako has "Peso"nality, Ikaw...Wala. Give the traditional Pinoy hand shake.

Now they are ready to fight??? "You started it you dumbasses".

Then, I get home and find out that my next door neighbor tried to rape my Honey Mo's 18yr old sister. His Wife was in our house crying and apologizing for her husband. He bite's her on the chest CSI style.

And I'm their little girl's Godfather...????

So what are you going to do about it big time? Just talk?

I may not be as "experienced" as you, but flashing a large bankroll is not a very good idea imo. I've had street guys make remarks in Tagolog about my GF also, but have never had to resort to getting physical. A couple of years ago one guy followed us for about a block making lewd comments to my girl. When I saw her crying, I stopped and waved for the guy to come here. I told him I wanted to talk to him. He took off, not wanting to deal with a pissed off American, senior citizen or not. To me guys like that are just punks with big mouths. Nothing really to worry about. But flashing money can invite the real "robbers" who are usually well armed. In that case you just have to give up the cash!

P.S. Pangit, once years ago I was walking back to my hotel late at night on Mabini street when a couple of street guys walked up to me and asked for money. I was with my girl then also. I said NO but then one of them put his hand on my shoulder to slow me down (I was walking). He made a big mistake as I handed him his arm back along with a king sized shove, almost knocking him down. He was so surprised that he backed away, as did his buddy. No harm, no foul in my book.

Last night at One Side I watched Francisco cream Gomez in Ten Ball and Dennis beat John Morra in One Pocket. Morra had just knocked off a hustler at Metro Poker room the night before. They were playing Banks when I left. I'm at the airport now, my three week excursion to the Philippines over. On my last day, I spent it with my daughter, who this time asked to go with me. She held onto me and wouldn't let go, rubbing my face and head with her little hands, and giving me little kisses. Tell you what, I didn't want to leave, that little imp had me under her spell.

Jay, I'm almost sorry you're coming back so soon.
I enjoy your Filipino threads.

...and Panjit gave us some running commentary on some of the matches...
...I don't think he would be so morose if he came home occasionally also...

regards
pt...thanx

I know what you mean about that, mine still does at 30:D

Thanks Jay. These threads are special in several ways and I always look forward to them.

Just got home with more good memories from the PI. Something about it grows on you and makes you want to come back and stay longer. Pangit, even with his complaints, LIVES THERE!

Yes, it's primitive compared to the USA. Yes, the infrastructure is sorely lacking in many ways. Yes, there is corruption on all levels. YES YES YES to all of that! But if you love pool and enjoy getting a game anywhere you go with no questions asked (other than what's the bet?), then there is no place like the PI.

And if you enjoy beautiful beaches at bargain prices, with food to match, then there is no other place quite like it. When you see how far your dollar will go in finding a nice place to live, you will be amazed. And a live-in helper will also make your stay that much more comfortable. I don't see many sad faces here (try none) among the foreigners I meet. The standard line is, "It's a rough life but somebody has to live it!" Always uttered with a broad smile on their face.
