Random Philippine musings

Just got home with more good memories from the PI. Something about it grows on you and makes you want to come back and stay longer. Pangit, even with his complaints, LIVES THERE!

Yes, it's primitive compared to the USA. Yes, the infrastructure is sorely lacking in many ways. Yes, there is corruption on all levels. YES YES YES to all of that! But if you love pool and enjoy getting a game anywhere you go with no questions asked (other than what's the bet?), then there is no place like the PI.

And if you enjoy beautiful beaches at bargain prices, with food to match, then there is no other place quite like it. When you see how far your dollar will go in finding a nice place to live, you will be amazed. And a live-in helper will also make your stay that much more comfortable. I don't see many sad faces here (try none) among the foreigners I meet. The standard line is, "It's a rough life but somebody has to live it!" Always uttered with a broad smile on their face.

Spoken like a true optimist! :p

It's a crazy country. We settled Honey Mo's young sisters near rape in the Barangay.

The meeting was conducted in my kitchen whilst I was away, because I would have pounded his little Monkey C... Ass into the concrete.

The presiding officer was "Madam" as she is known...everyone has a nickname. She is known as "Madam" because the entire barangay has utang with her...{owes her money}, She wields the heaviest sword.

And this guy admits that he's in "love" with Carmen in front of his wife???? He's not allowed to come near my house anymore according to "Madam".

There are no "secret's" in the RP, Chismis as it is. Everyone "observes" everything.

He's not allowed to come near my house anymore accoding to "Madam?. The whole baragnay is fully aware of what happened. She rules the roost...gotta roll with the flow.

So that is ok with you? Your not going to really do anything about it yourself?

I see that members are still complaining about Pangit...let me just say that this makes the forum much nicer to read:

In Firefox, I used the suggestion in the following link http://www.socialanxietysupport.com/forum/f51/hide-people-on-your-ignore-list-193276/ and installed greasemonkey and the script on http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/88463. After that, just add http://forums.azbilliards.com/* to the user setting and these ignored users disappear completely from the thread and any posts that have ignored user in quote! There used to be addon that did this but was not updated.

Last night at One Side I watched Francisco cream Gomez in Ten Ball and Dennis beat John Morra in One Pocket. Morra had just knocked off a hustler at Metro Poker room the night before. They were playing Banks when I left. I'm at the airport now, my three week excursion to the Philippines over. On my last day, I spent it with my daughter, who this time asked to go with me. She held onto me and wouldn't let go, rubbing my face and head with her little hands, and giving me little kisses. Tell you what, I didn't want to leave, that little imp had me under her spell.

Jay,

Gomez got his way with Busti last wednesday night at Hermes Bar, 20-15 was the final score, they played on the first Diamond table from the entrance. well Busti was complaining about the table :):):)
it was dead even at 15-15 , i thought this was a cliff hanger, nobody giving in, a 2 rack lead is no safe from either one of them. then suddenly Gomez change to his 6th gear and taking the next 5 racks

The Philippines..I’ve had it..the longer I live here {nearly 10 yrs}, the more I dislike it. I’m seriously considering moving to Thailand. The food is WAY better, the infrastructure is WAY better. You can only eat so much Adobo, Dried Fish, and “Carabao Caldereta”?

The Go-Go Bars are just as good. Pool is okay, Snooker is even better. Dart’s are better. The Thai’s have Katoy’s the RP has Bakla’s. same-same, gotta deal with homosexuals and beggars wherever you “is” SE Asia. Always conduct a package check. I’ll be a “Farang” in the Land of Smiles instead of a “Kano” in the Land of Mabuhay. Both countries….I have ATM written on my forehead. Thailand makes sense.

Talk about exploiting girls all ya want. The Pinoy’s are the worst. The more money you have, the more “wives” you have. Politicians, Actors, {pretty much the same thing}. Remember, Divorce isn’t allowed in the RP…Because the Pope said so, along with birth control.

The Best “Girlie” bars in the Philippines are for Pinoy’s. A Kano can’t go in the “good” ones without a Local that the bar “knows”, and of course the “Kano” is paying for everything. Better than anything in Angeles City with the possible exception of DUNK SHOT. The Pinoy owned bars don’t get a shake down for underage girls like the “Kano” owned bars. Shit…”your government licensed her via the National Bureau of in Investigation {NBI}/ PNP to shake that ass for me”? And now the “licensing authority” is putting the shake down on me? Normally they aren’t underage, it’s a setup from the beginning. The closer it gets to Christmas…the worse it gets. At least in Thailand, “Karma” rules…Here, it’s Police Officer’s issuing no helmet citations to people on scooters, while they themselves are riding scooters without a helmet? And the Country wonders why it’s poverty stricken????? Corruption is beyond belief. I have a good friend married to an Ilocano, His in-laws will make someone disappear for P10000. There is no CSI here. They don’t even really investigate anything unless it’s someone important. More importantly my Aussie best friend is the Grand Poo Bah of the Local Chapter of the Free Masons. That thrumps everything.

95% of Pinoy’s don’t have a lick of business sense. They are world class hustlers, no doubt. It’s HARD to find good employees. That’s why I’m Kalbo, I’ve pulled all my hair out.

It’s sort of understandable…I probably wouldn’t bust my ass in flip flops for 5 dollars a day in the heat of the tropics, either. It’s crazy, it seems like there are NO Pinoy run business’s that has basic change on hand for a 500P note. That’s about twelve and a half dollars???

Everywhere ya go. I hear, “Sir, do you have a smaller bill”?.....”No” I say, “because no business in the Philippines from Chow King to Burger King can provide change, I’m tapped out of small bills”… Yet all us foreigner run businesses seem to always have change on hand? It’s endemic in the culture.. Then they hold up their hand and say “wait”….then go running around to other local “businesses” looking for change, the whole time the customer is waiting… “listen rocket scientist”, the other “business’s” ain’t got any change either, and if “they” did, “they” probably won’t give it up anyway.…”they” operate their business just like “you”.

Spoke to a guy in Philippines last week. He was moving to the Philippines after 10 years in Thailand. His nickname was Bangkok Bob

I have a friend that has lived in the Philippines for 20 years. When I ride with him in his car, he will slow down and lecture pinoy moto drivers about their stupid driving habits. It cracks me up! I just laff and ask him if he really thinks he is going to change something there?

Relax Pangit!

pangit as I have suggested before, move to an exclusive subdivision somewhere in makati, corinthian gardens or alabang so you won't have to deal with everything you whine about. or better yet, go with your plan on moving to thailand

I bought a new Nokia Asha 306 Cell phone yesterday at a so called "reputable" business In the new Ayala Mall in Olongao???

It is supposed to have all these Wi-Fi, Blue Tooth, WLAN capabilities??? The Dictionary is in Chinese, the GPS doesn't work????...and non these "employees" can figure out how to make the dictionary speak English or the GPS worK??? I went back today and tried to make "them" fix it.

"Sorry" Sir, Company policy...no exchanges or refunds is their canned reply in unison???

What the hell is that??? "Where" do I purchase a Cell phone that works from a Vendor that stands behind their product???? Anywhere in the RP...please

That's the way it is in the PI, nothing makes sense???

Pool related....all these little guys running around the table...pulling balls out of pockets in your line of view...when you are down on a shot? Relax...stand back from the table whilst I'm addressing the ball??? Please... It seems to be an alien request?

And they will probably go to "Sabong" next...bet on which Rooster get's killed first in the Local Cock Fight Arena.

It's Karma...There is a reason the country is poverty stricken.

and your karma is your stuck here  you must have been a very bad person to have a karma like that :rotflmao1:

That's just one reason I don't live in Manila...it's far safer to live in the Provence..."normally".

On the other hand...there are lots of monster pool players in Manila? I wouldn't recommend a "newbie" coming here right now.

The U.S. Embassy sent out an emergency message Friday to inform American citizens in Manila of a possible threat against them.

"The U.S. Embassy advises American citizens in the Philippines that a threat against American citizens in metropolitan Manila, specifically the Pasay City neighborhood, has been detected by reliable security forces. This threat remains in effect until October 10, 2012," the message said.

The advisory however did not specify the nature of the threat.

Tina Malone, U.S. Embassy information officer, told Yahoo! Southeast Asia that the message was sent out to inform the American community of a "possible threat" but that the source of the threat is "not known at this time."

U.S. Ambassador Harry Thomas Jr. has ordered heightened security in U.S. government facilities in Manila, she said.

Meanwhile, American citizens in Manila have been advised to "exercise extreme caution in their daily routine and to maintain extra awareness regarding their own security" and to maintain a low profile.

The U.S. Embassy also advised citizens to vary their travel routes and schedules, and to "consider cancelling any American gatherings, celebrations or observations that could be construed as American events."

Perceived security concerns should be reported to Philippine authorities, the U.S. Embassy said.

But Colonel Arnulfo Burgos Jr, Armed Forces of the Philippines spokesman, said the military has "not monitored any specific threat."

He added the AFP will coordinate with the Philippine National Police and other law enforcement agencies "and further intensify our intelligence collection and monitoring efforts."

U.S. embassies and consulates have seen protests and attacks in recent weeks over an “anti-Islamic” video clip uploaded on YouTube. The alleged filmmaker has been detained.

Nothing about the Hairy Highway To Hell?

Disappointing.

An American was killed during a robbery at a 7/11 while I was there. That may be what brought about this warning. It was a random act of violence that could have happened anywhere. Rather than comply with the robbers request for money, he made a run for it and got shot. Terrible to be sure, but that is one of the rare times I've heard of a foreigner being hurt or killed during years of visiting. By the way I was walking the streets of Pasay every day when I was there! No one gave me a second look. I contend that the streets of Manila remain safer than the streets of any city in the USA.

The warning came about after the muslim community in manila started protesting at the us embassy following that muhammad video. Just this evening they storm the embassy and promised violence if the Philippines government didnt block the video in the Philippines.

You may have gotten a knockoff... the chinese have made very extensive copies of iphones and nokias before, even going as far as to match the box and install a fake OS.

You can have a wide selection of "replicas" - http://www.mymobiles.com.pk/nokia_replica-in-pakistan-c24-cs25-1

The RP department of tourism would be well advised to adopt "kabet" as it's tourism flagship video? It's in Tagalog. EVERYONE in the PI sing's it.

Let's be honest....most guys come here for the "nookie". I really don't want to say it's like reading a menu?????? The Pool, beaches, and Diving are the icing on the cake.

On the down side...you have to deal with all these Pulubies, "Beggars" and their parents, they send their children out like whore's...not really shocking... "teach" them this stuff?

I care for my 92 year old mother. As long as she keeps going I won't be moving anywhere. My plan ultimately is to have two homes, one in California and one in the Philippines, maybe spending about six months a year in each location. I am constantly looking for the ideal location to relocate to over here. There are so many nice places to choose from, some of them being: Boracay, a very popular island resort area one hour by plane from Manila; Baguio, a beautiful city four hours north of Manila (by car) at a high enough altitude that the weather is more mild, a popular vacation spot for filipinos; Subic, closer to Manila (two hours by car) with nice beaches and pleasant weather (also close to Angeles); Bohol, one of the more beautiful islands, less populated, clean, inexpensive, also a popular tourist destination; Palawan, maybe the most primitive island in the chain with some totally undeveloped and pristine beaches, for the traveler who wants to get away from it all; Taygaytay, a modern city close to Manila (maybe one hour by car) that has become a popular place for wealthier filipinos to have a second home. And there's more!

Palawan's definitely a good choice, Jay! Why don't you come over for a visit (or two, or three) some time. I can show you around and introduce you to some of the expats. Robinson's just opened so it doesn't seem too primitive now (whether that's good or bad, we still have to find out). I manage the local Microtel here and it's right on the beach.:)
