Random Philippine musings

ROTATION is the main game, but most of the good players will play 9-Ball, Ten Ball or Eight Ball as well.

Hi jay,

I don't understand why you say the Diamonds plays differently than other pool tables. If you same rails was installed to any other table, would not it play the same? I keep hearing you say it in the telecast.

Philippines B loss was a shock. You predicted a Filipino team in the finals. I predicted both Filipino teams in the finals. Switzerland and Thailand are dark horses in this competition.

How about trying pool underwater in Boracay?

Senator Sotto weeps in Congress because the Country is trying to implement the RH bill "Reproductive Health"

He asks if the RP is over populated???

Of course it is..you dumb ass. You're an elected official? It's common place for nearly ill literate people to reproduce like mice. 10 kids..cant afford one. It's a viscous cycle.

Most societies...have seen the light.

Despite what the Catholic Church preaches, Birth Control is not a bad thing. Is the Church going to pay for your child's health care, books, school clothes etc... No... All the Church is concerned with is how much money are you going to tithe? The fact remains the biggest chunk of the RP's GNP is Overseas remittance. Something isn't working...let's face it.

What's the old saying? "Most people get the sort of government they deserve."

http://ph.news.yahoo.com/ph-not-overpopulated--claims-sotto.html?page=all

"Is the Philippines overpopulated?" Senator Vicente "Tito" Sotto asked, as he scoffed at the need for a Reproductive Health (RH) Bill which he claimed was at population control measure.

The National Statistics Office pegged the Philippine population at 92.34 million in 2010, up from 88.57 million in in 2007.

In a privilege speech Wednesday, however, Sotto said RH advocates' claims that the Philippines needs an RH bill to control the booming population "lack bases and are weakly founded."

Sotto pointed to data which show a drop in fertility rates to 3.19 births per woman in 2011 from 3.48 in 2000.

"Napakalaki ng ibinaba nito mula sa 7 noong 1960 (This is a significant decline from 7 in 1960)," Sotto said.

He added that population growth decreased to 1.9 percent in 2010, adding that this is lower than 1948's 2.07 percent.

Experts have also said that areas in the Philippines remain thinly populated, even as the number of persons in urban areas grow, Sotto said.

"Wala po itong kinalaman sa pagtaas o pagbaba ng fertility rate sa bansa (This is not related to the rise or fall in the country's fertility rates)," he added.

Quoting economist Bernardo Villegas, Sotto instead attributed the problem of overly populated areas in the country to "at least three decades of erroneous policy of utterly neglecting countryside and rural development."

Sotto went on to say that controlling the Philippine population may even be detrimental as it may weaken the country's workforce.

He urged the government "learn from the mistakes of other countries" which he claimed now experience the negative effects of an "aging population."

This is due to these countries' "aggressive campaign to control the population and their support for contraceptive use," he said.

As for the RH bill in the Philippines, Sotto said: "[A]ng kalalabasan ay ang paggamit ng birth control bilang instrumento para paliitin ang populasyon (The outcome will be the use of birth control as an instrument to lower the population)."

"[H]indi tayo makabubuo ng ang isang situwasyon kung saan tatapyasin ang laki ng mga pamilya nang hindi pinaliliit ang populasyon ng bansa (We cannot create a situation where the size of the family is reduced without reducing the country's population)," Sotto added.

A group advocating the RH bill, however, noted that the controversial measure is not put forward as a population control measure.

"Kung liliit man po ang populasyon, ito po ay epekto lamang ng kagustuhan ng bawat pamilya na magpasyang maliit lamang ang gusto nilang pamilya (Any decrease in population will be due to individual families' choice to limit their family size)," Ernesto Almocera, Jr., director for Advocacy and Policy Development at the Philippine Legislators' Committee for Population and Development, Inc., said.

"What the bill aims to address is the unmet need for contraceptives and family planning supply," he added.

Almocera also hit Sotto's statement that the RH Bill is unnecessary since current laws do not rob families of "freedom of choice" when it comes to family planning.

"Women and families may have the freedom to choose but their choice may not be informed," Almocera said.

"Ang pinakamahihirap na kababaihan po ay hindi naaabot ng kasalukuyang programa sa family planning (The poorest women are not reached by current government family planning programs)," he added.

Commenting on Sotto's claims that the RH bill will encourage abortion, Almocera said: "The RH bill will effectively inhibit the prevalence of abortion by reducing the number of unplanned pregnancies."

This, as Almocera addmitted that the Rh bill has provisions on abortion, noting however that there are "only to manage the complications resulting from abortion."

"Besides, the bill clearly states that abortion will remain illegal and punishable by law," Almocera said.

well ... another pathetic, sad and lonely being added to my ignore list. Seen too many like him living (stuck) in 3rd world countries.

ok, that went from interesting "random musings" to angry full page political soapboxing real fast. I take it back, pangit's kinda tanking this thread >_<

I am very sorry that this person is so unhappy, but why is he allowed to keep stinking up someone else's thread?

I enjoy Jay's upbeat and informative post ( Keep it up Jay ).

Remove the thing that stinks and the smell will go away! :frown:

Well, this is just me... my experience has been that nobody is black and white, where they make either 100% good posts or 100% bad posts. So I don't use the ignore feature, I just skim the first few lines and decide if the post is worth continuing with or not. I actually found some of his earlier posts interesting. But as soon as it strays to politics I get sleepy.

I just watched two games, Canada vs Philippines....
Then we lost the stream.
..strangest thing,:confused:one of the commentators sounded American...
..I detected a California influence to his speech pattern, but the man has
to be originally from Ohio.

And Pangit's posts seem to be random musings....
...wait a minute, that's in the thread title.
..as far as I'm concerned, he can carry on....one man's view....
..if we all looked at things the same way, we would have no need
to share view points.

At least pangit has been useful in updating the world cup thread. I'll give him that much...

Actually, 'gitty's posts are pretty few and far between. He doesn't overbearingly argue his point, like other people do - such as me, for instance. :embarrassed2:

Personally, I find the lack of detail irritating. Others find all his posts annoying. But he doesn't derail anything IMO.

Decent hotel room, anywhere from 1,500-2,000p a day. You can eat well on 500p a day, so there you go. About $50 in US terms. Of course if you are staying longer, one week or one month rents can be arranged in apartelles for quite a bit less and if you eat on the street (great fresh fruit and drinks, plus sate style chicken, beef and pork) you can get by on half that or less. Many ex-pats are living well here with $1,000+ pensions. Outside Manila all the prices go down as well. Angeles City is very popular with ex-pats and a nice apartment can be had for $200-250 a month.

I won't deny that corruption is rampart here on all levels, but tourists like me are good for the economy and provide employment for millions of filipinos who would otherwise be starving. Just by coming here and spending money you are helping many people to survive. Foreign tourists (especially Americans) are welcome everywhere, except in the more dangerous areas of Mindanao. I still like being greeted everywhere I go with a smiling face and "Hello sir." Sorry but that's just me. I'm NEVER treated that well in the good ole USA. Yes, I've had problems too, but nothing I can't handle.

Thanks for the info Jay. I have been considering different places to retire to when the time comes. (it's almost 25 years away for me but its never too soon to plan) I like to visit the potential area a few times first by way of vacations. The PI has been on my list for awhile now as well as certain parts of Mexico. I appreciate your posts on the subject, keep em coming!

Commentator was fellow AZer Bob Guerrero, also a very avid pool fan and a good player too. The other one is an american. I think his name is James? Jake? but I'm sure his surname is Helfert :D

This thread is right on time. I walk into my regular haunt, http://www.barrettobars.com/barrio-barretto-bars/midnight-rambler/

Midnight Rambler in Barrio Barreto. It's a big place...right on the beach...Steve from London who owns the fish chips shop as a sub-let within in the "business" comes up to me and says, "I've Closed the Chippy Shop". He looked like he was ready to chew his arm off. All I said was "Why"?

His long reply..."I can't work with Filipino's anymore". It's sooo funny...only because I feel his pain. Basically, he had 15,000 Peso's worth of meat delivered to the shop...they sell way more than fish and chips... He tell's his "Main Man" to put the meat in the freezer 4 times.

Next morning...it's still on the floor. Obviously this was the straw that broke the Camel's Back. He went on and on about emptying ash-trays when he told his employees. The guy has lived here for nearly twenty years. He's also a manager at http://www.harleyspub.com/ on Baloy Beach.

Now there are about 10 employees that are Kawaw because they don't have a job anymore.

Do what I did. Put him on "ignore" and you wont see his posts.
I did the same quite a while ago. Not much comes out of his mouth worth reading.

AZ ough to publish the top ten "ignored" posters just to recognize their efforts :)

It's not only the rails that make a Diamond play differently, but that's a big part of it. They happen to be excellent tables that take a little adjusting too, especially the angle of deflection off the rails and the bank angles (they play shorter than a Gold crown for instance). The pros who are here that have more time on the Diamonds are at a definite advantage.

I will not be playing any underwater pool now or in the future, quite happy to hit balls on dry land.

You really seem to enjoy your time there. Have you ever considered moving there permanently? Just curious if this something you've considered. What would stop you from doing so?

I care for my 92 year old mother. As long as she keeps going I won't be moving anywhere. My plan ultimately is to have two homes, one in California and one in the Philippines, maybe spending about six months a year in each location. I am constantly looking for the ideal location to relocate to over here. There are so many nice places to choose from, some of them being: Boracay, a very popular island resort area one hour by plane from Manila; Baguio, a beautiful city four hours north of Manila (by car) at a high enough altitude that the weather is more mild, a popular vacation spot for filipinos; Subic, closer to Manila (two hours by car) with nice beaches and pleasant weather (also close to Angeles); Bohol, one of the more beautiful islands, less populated, clean, inexpensive, also a popular tourist destination; Palawan, maybe the most primitive island in the chain with some totally undeveloped and pristine beaches, for the traveler who wants to get away from it all; Taygaytay, a modern city close to Manila (maybe one hour by car) that has become a popular place for wealthier filipinos to have a second home. And there's more!

A little update on the action scene the last few days. One Side is only a few blocks from Robinsons Place mall where the tournament is taking place, so many of the pros have been going there to play in their free time. The big action has all revolved around Shane (what else is new). In order he has played Jeff De Luna (he of the monster break) 9-Ball and lost, Dennis Orcollo One Pocket and lost, De Luna Ten Ball - win, Roberto Gomez Ten Ball - win, and last night Carlo Biado Ten Ball - win. Shane has been in action every night this week! The sets have ranged from 40 to 60K in pesos (you figure it out). Serious games over here.

They LOVE Shane here, he isn't afraid to get in the box with anyone, maybe the only foreign player other than Darren Appleton who will. Shane is followed everywhere he goes and the filipinos turn out to watch his matches. He is probably the most popular foreign player in the P.I. I watched his match with Biado last night (a very dangerous player) and let me tell you Shane flat BROUGHT IT! It was a Race to 21 for over a G note and deep in the match Shane trailed 15-12. That's when he reached down and played some awesome pool, running out one difficult rack after another. I think he ran the last four racks from 17-17 to close it out! When Shane lowers the boom you can forget about it. This young man who happens to be America's best tournament player, also is one helluva money player. A rare combination, something he has in common with Buddy Hall and Johnny Archer, who were his predecessors.

P.S. He doesn't have (or need) a backer for these sets either. Shane is his own man, in control of his own destiny.
