What is the greatest compliment someone has given you?

Greenbelt, '92?

I think mine was from Johnny Archer in 1992. He said "nice shot" when I was playing him. That isn't much but considering he was the world champion at the time it meant a lot to me.

Back around '92, I heard about a guy who liked to gamble a bit in a bar in Greenbelt (I think) Maryland.
I had a good description of him and when I walked in there was no mistaking who the fella was.
He was playing $10 8-ball and there were five quarters ahead of me on the rail of the coin-op. I added mine as he broke and ran out, and then ran five more for six in a row. When my turn came, he came up dry on the break and I proceeded to run five racks against him (the other players quit immediately).
After shooting in my fifth 8-ball, he began to take down his cue.
"Givin' up already?" I asked. "I just watched you run six racks!"
"Yeah," he responded, "but not the way you run them, - you're too damn good for me!"

My greatest compliment was about the style and refinement with which I play and approach the table. It was regarding good taste and sportsmanship from treating others to taking the shot and approaching the game.

I have always appreciated the beauty of life and much of it has to do with taste. The game can always be refined and improved, but the sensibility of good taste must be already there and constant self awareness and personal standard are key to keeping it.

I have had many different compliments about my game, but the one that meant the most was this.

When I was 20 years old and I finally got to the point where John Dudley said "No more weight for you!"

I have 3:

1.) After my round one match with Danny Harriman at the Derby City 9 ball about 5 years ago Danny told me, "you have the talent to be a pro and if you work at your game a little more, you could be in a year or 2"

2.) When people in my league know they have to play me and say things such as "ohh crap (and every other variation of that)", "ohhhh great" and other such things.

3.) When people come up to me during the league and say that they learned some things after watching me play or stick around to watch me play another good player.

You are a shot-maker.
Now if you could get some Ball Control, you would be unstoppable.

At first, I didn't appreciate what he said, it was so back-handed.
Eventually I realized he was right, and the second sentence was actually more helpful......

I was at a bar with Keith M. and I matched up with some guy playing 8-ball. The guy runs the first two racks, so I turn to Keith and ask him what I should do. Without hesitation he says "double the bet"..

When I was about 19 Bill Cress asked me to play some with just the 8 ball, I declined. He laughed and said "You're a cautious young man, you would probably do good on the road.. you look like a college kid". I said "I am Bill.. just don't go to class very much"..

On the other hand, I once lucked out and beat Leil Gay in a tournament. He said "I hope you feel good.. you played like sh*t and still won". I said, thanks, I did play pretty good for me :-)

I stopped playing for 10 years after that so it didn't really hurt my "action" LoL

CJ, one of the best compliments came from you to me. During one of the Miller LIte tournaments you and I played eight ball on the bar table one morning before the tournament started. I don't remember what the game was for. Maybe $20 a game. After a couple of hours of playing you said to me " I gotta quit you, you never get out of line"

Then you went on to win the tournament. At the time it didn't mean much but after you winning the tournament it meant a lot and more so in later years.

a chick told me it felt like it was in her stomach once.

as far as pool someone told me i had good fundamentals. it meant a lot to me

I went on a 6 week road trip with Buddy Hall( not gambling, just a trip).I was just banging balls and Buddy was watching,He told me my stroke was good enough that I could do anything with the cueball.I took that as a real compliment comming from someone who has one of the best strokes ever.

This seems like a repeat thread but...

I'm not sure this is a compliment but I liked this one so much I put it in WONDERBOYS just as it happened...

I beat Shorty the first time I played him in a tournament...straight pool...he packed up his cue and walked over to the tournament chart area where a bunch of spectators gave him the business about how could he lose to me...

Shorty said, "Hey these guys ain't helpless you know...they got pool cues in their hands."

JA hasn't changed much in 20 years. When he and Nick Varner were here for a clinic this year he told me "man you look good" about my stroke. A while later when were playing a game he said "That there was a nice break and run".

The guy really knows how to make you feel good!
