Drama in sues every where this guy goes. I personally don't like or dislike him. One thing is for sure it doesn't create the Type of drama you want to draw in a crowd. He brings no rivalry, no real help or direction to players, he doesn't really seem to bring much to the table to be honest. I know he has been around for years, but how does that qualify him to UNITE and COACH team USA to another level, to bring the cup home? I've never seen him as a coach for any one or any thing except last year's cup, and look at the results...

I think with all of the above weighing in, I cant in good faith recommend him, when there are other better options available.

just my $.02,

Justin

I don't think he's accomplished enough to be the captain.

As far as his work ethic, I saw him a few months back at amsterdam billiards in NYC hosting and playing in an exhibition with Efren Reyes. Charlie was a solid hour late. A good crowd was there on time waiting to watch Efren. I felt bad for Efren, (who's a friggin legend) who was just sitting there waiting. In my opinion Charlie shoulda cleared out his schedule, and made sure he got there well before.

Then he finally showed up, threw out some lame jokes, that went no where, played a half hearted match and tried to sell some cues. Efren then had a photo and signing session, where Cahrlie was also signing and giving colored glossy 8x10's out of himself. Efren had no 8x10 colored glossy photos which woulda been nice , but regardless who the hell wants a colored Glossy 8x10 of Charlie Williams??

Tony Robles or Mike Zugland would be my choices. Sure they are sketchy New Yorker's but their accomplishments, attitude and aptitude would make them a top flight choice....sorry if I offended any of the NY folks I am still recovering from the collapse of my Red Sox and still a little bitter.

Me too! Tony would be GREAT for the team!

Mark,

I agree 100% that Tony Robles would make a great choice.

I can't speak for Tony, but I can mention (this is more than hearsay) that Robles would be enthusiastic and thrilled to take on the role of captain. In addition, Tony has the experience, as a former Mosconi participant.

If there were a way to petition Matchroom Sports, I would be a part of it.

You mean like in those "darn Yankees"? :grin-square:

For sure, Mike Zuglan would be an excellent choice as Mosconi Cup captain. Not only is he a proficient professional player, but his contribution to American pool in general by keeping the longest running regional tour alive is phenomenal.

In fact, he's worthy of being inducted into the BCA's Hall of Fame, but I'm sure those BCA industry members wouldn't consider somebody as worthy as Mike Zuglan as they's rather induct somebody that puts money in their collective pockets. It's all about the almighty dollar when it comes to the BCA. They induct their own industry members and give themselves awards, and for what? What in the world are they doing for professional pool lately, these BCA members?

Here's a great shot of Mike taken at the 2002 U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship. I think it was the last one he attended, and he ain't been back. I have a lot of Mike Zuglan photos, but I was always fond of this one with Keith. They look happy.

Most on here know that a coach is not needed for just about any of the top American pros. Another $7,500 a man for the win will fire them up if left to play their own game. In fact IMO a coach only (no mater who) only hurts thier mental game. It's up to the other 4 players to lift one back up after a tough loss. It's called being a team, which is a bad format for most American players. Johnnyt

And I think that's the back of Joe Tuckers head, if I'm not mistaken,
Hi Joe.

Hi Everyone,

I would like to start out by saying that I am honored and humbled by all the positive comments on this thread.

Even though its been a couple of years since I last posted something in the AZBilliards forum, I had to thank each and everyone of you for your kind words and support in regards to the possibility of captaining the USA Mosconi Cup team this coming December.

Am I interested? YES! Would I be able to go if I got the opportunity? ABSOLUTELY!

I played in the 2003 (Las Vegas) & 2004 (Holland) Mosconi Cup which we won both years and I can honestly tell you that it was the most intense experience I've had as a professional but it was very rewarding and definitely the proudest moment of my career as an American.

Matchroom Sports has always been good to me and regardless of who they decide to pick, I believe in the US Team 100% and they definitely have my support.

I've always had the utmost respect for what Matchroom Sports does for our beautiful sport and this year will be no different as they always put on a fantastic show.

Once again I am humbled and really appreciate the support.

Thanks for your time and have a great day everyone!

Tony

I'm surprised AZ isn't noticing this illustrious new member.
Say hello to Tony Robles...:wave3::wave2::clapping:

I appreciate what CW has done keeping the world 14.1 tournament going but he is the wrong choice for the Mosconi Cup.

Ray Martin would be my choice. World champion who has written some of the best books on pool.

I do not think it brings it down. Could another person do a better job or have a more popular personality? Possibly. At the end of the day its up to the players to perform. In last years Mosconi cup it appeared to me that Charlie was pumped up and playing his part. As a disclaimer I only watched about the first half of it.

You know Ray Martin won his World Championships in 14.1.........
