Build a champion in a month or 2. Is this possible?

I sent Zack down to the room. I got up kind of late. Needed to recover from the tournament and the smoke.

I have about 5 players to call and schedule times for a lesson. I think some of them left but I'll find out. They all live fairly close.

Thanks again Ken for your help. I should have gotten your number but I'm sure they have it down at the room.

If you see this give me a call. 715-563-8712.

Looks like it's going to be a fun day.

I think Gabe and Chip is going to happen around 7 or 8 at Chesters.

I can either watch some great action for awhile but I'm sure someone will step up to the plate and want to gamble a little.

Now we have an option. They can play the kid or the old man.

Equal opportunity pool players......

I will call after work.

I want another shot at the old man!! You didn't get my best Sunday morning and I am sure I didn't get your best either.

Ken

Saw that something special in this kid...........

I don't know if genuine worldbeaters can be built.

Whatever the component is that separates shortstops from pros, or pros from top pros...I think it's a psychological thing. Drive is probably the best word for it. And you'll probably see evidence of it at an early age.

You can love pool and you can care about pool, but you can't program someone to, say, practice breaking for 6 straight hours and be awake the entire time, or not leave the house before they run 100 in straight pool, or whatever. I think kind of obsessive quest for perfection has to do with someone's personality and how they grew up.

What you sound like you're doing is teaching him to handle pressure. But for some guys, that "middle of the field" level is all they'll ever achieve even if they figure out how to 100% control their nerves.

Months ago I saw this something special in this young kid that I saw in Jesse Engle 2 years ago.

Jesse had the advantage of being around some pretty special players in Minneapolis growing up in the world of pool.

Zack has this same something special..

I've been there so I can see this in a player. At least I think I can.

But you are right. I don't know if that part can be taught.

But however jesse engle got there, he got there.

Zack is there. he just needs that fine tuning.

When we are young you can get away with doing things not quite right as far as eating, sleeping right and managing your health.

But if you have this desire and can learn these other things you can turn your body and mind into a machine. A pool shooting machine.

We'll see in about a month or 2 and see how this pans out.

I like the odds here. I think I got a winner here.........

Second day kind of rough........

Zack hasn't been playing at all for awhile so it will take a few weeks to get him up to the speed he was at a 7 months ago when i was working with him in appleton, Wi.

He came out about $10 loser today after table time and eating at the poolhall.

This will get better real quick though.

Already started to point out things he isn't doing. But should with his routine.

We also got to the gym and worked out for about an hour.

A person needs a plan. Even a bad plan will work if you work hard at it.

A good plan works even better.

Easy does it.

You have a lot of heart, Gene, keep doing the "next right thing" and things will work out, they always do.

The key to being a Champion is the day you "Real Eyes" there's ALWAYS a "right shot", a "right way" and a "right attitude" that paves the way.

Help him find that "right" and put him in situations where he has to "fight".
This is the recipe that's always worked and I'm sure it can work for you guys too. 'Your Game is Your Teacher'

I enjoy hearing about your trip. If you get a chance to stop through here (Sioux Falls, SD) on the way back home for the holidays, that would be awesome!!!! I'd give it a go with a lesson for sure!

Good luck to both of you guys!

best,

Justin

Words of wisdom and how true.......

Right now he is fighting everyday. he is hungry and he can't wait to get down to the poolhall and try to build his bankroll. I woke up after sleeping 8 hours and he's gone to the poolhall.

We talked about what he could have done different the day before to maybe maximize his efforts. Kind of like pool school, the thinking and planning forum after hours. This is when you need to think when everything is fresh in your mind.

In the near future the mistakes in judgement can be covered up by his shooting ability. We used to call it shooting out of a trap. All of us old timers know what that is and have shot out of a trap or two.

The really cool thing is after I was done playing I looked over and Zack was helping one of the players that I gave a perfect Aim lesson to. He had been hitting some balls with james and noticed that he had already slipped back to not doing what he had learned from his lesson which is very easy to do.

I watched from a distance as Zack worked tirelessly to help James for about 45 minutes.

Here Zack was doing what I usually do when I'm around a student the next day or 2. Giving him a little tuneup. Especially if i see what Zack saw.

How exciting is this. At this young age that zack also can make such a difference on the road. He can teach this just as well as i can. And I can see the passion there to help someone learn. What a gift to pool being so young with something so powerful to teach. With the right things to teach.

After helping James, Zack came over to me and said. There are some things about this perfect Aim, especially how you measure those balls that I need to learn. I didn't really learn certain parts of Perfect aim.

What a gift it would be to pool to have 25 young guys like Zack teaching great things that would help players everywhere.

I can see already that this is going to be allot of fun. Not only seeing Zack grow as a player and competitor but to see him hone his teaching skills along the way.

And CJ, you are so right. Coming from someone that's walked the walk for many years, your words have a real truth to them.

Thanks for the input my friend...........

Roger:

First of all, it's too bad that Scott Lee deleted his post, because it would prove I'm not the only one "busting geno's chops" (as you put it). Which is not busting his chops, btw, but rather, setting the record straight as to some of the "claims."

I guess like many, I'm just tired of the "in yo' face" marketing that's going on, albeit I'm probably the most boisterous of any. I just don't pull any punches with this kind of stuff, because in a previous life (previous job), I myself have moderated Usenet news groups, BBSes, chat boards, and forums before, and spam was the biggest problem we (the mods) faced.

And geno's not the only one, btw. I'd gotten on Robin Dodson (robroy), John Barioni (Barioni Cues), JoeyA, Dr. Dave, and others (onesie-twosies, here and there). You just have a short memory, or are just engaging in a little "spin" yourself, Roger, to try to shore up your point.

It has nothing to do with respect "for one over the other" -- I actually respect Gene for his playing abilities and what he does "out there" on the road, furthering the sport. But there is a time and place for everything. The issue of unsolicited marketing is covered quite well in the Terms of Service that everyone who gets an account here has to acknowledge before their screenname is created. And, if there's a such thing as leniency, socking good will into the AZB bank in the form of contributing real usable information to the boards would have something to do with it.

As for what the AZB admins do, there's lots going on behind the scenes you don't know about, because it's hidden from you. Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Sean,
You incessantly whine about SOME members of this forum for marketing their products and services. As Roger suggested, if you're going to whine about marketing, whine about all of the people attempting to market themselves, their products and their services on the Main Forum.

It really gets old reading this claptrap about marketing but it would be fine with me if you just discontinued it altogether.

I personally like your in depth articles about the intricacies of stroke and other pocket billiard related posts.

Most of us are big boys and girls and we can decide what we want to read about and we don't need you or anyone else to point out what is marketing and what's not marketing.

SINCE THIS IS GENE'S THREAD:
How about giving Gene some additional tips on helping build a champion in a month or two? Ok, then how about giving Gene some tips on tweaking a good player's game. Ohhhh, forget that too. Gene wants to do this on his own.

I for one, am very interested in everything that Gene has to offer and the fact is that we are being privileged to seeing the world through the eyes of not just a very good player but someone who is trying to make it financially on the road. Gene's marketing is MINISCULE compared to the WINDOW that he is allowing us to look through in his posts and threads and it is an honor for me to take a peek each and every time Gene posts in this forum.

Joey:

Was this really necessary? I mean, Roger posted essentially the same thing you did, I'd already replied to that and explained myself to Roger, demonstrated that Geno wasn't the only one I'd "gotten on" about incessant parasitic marketing (even named other names as samples, which WASN'T a complete list, trust me), backed out of the thread, and formally apologized to geno and the readership.

But as expected, you couldn't resist piling on, could you? Another member of my "fan" club.

Joey, with the fact that I'd already backed out and apologized -- meaning your reply was needless -- you can take your blue-inked nun's ruler (that you're attempting to whack my knuckles with) and stick it where the sun don't shine. There, how's THAT for telling it like it is?

Don't get your panties in a bunch Sean. I can't say for sure but your mentioning of me as one of your targets may have played a part in me responding.

I am a fan of yours Sean. SERIOUSLY!

I just don't like your whining and your attempts to demonize pool people trying to make a living by marketing themselves in this pool forum.

Zack got some good work. .....

he won $90 playing small sets with everyone and got some good practice. He started at about 10:00am and played until 2:00am in the next morning.

He'll be playing pretty good in a couple of weeks. then I will let him play bigger sets. for now it's getting the stroke back and getting used to making the money balls.

Off to Olathe in the morning.

Hey Geno,
That is what my Starting the Lock Society was about. A society of good pool players and teachers of pool to people that want to improve their pool game. But people bite into me with hands and feet about it.
Geno I love what you are doing for pool and pool players all over the USA.
Please keep up the good work as long as you can.

I like to help pool players to improve their pool game if they want to learn and will listen to me. If they start out with I know that, when I am trying to help them then that is a sign that they do not appreciate my help. So I move on. I do not charge them a nickle either.
Many Regards,
Lock N Load.

thanks there Lock,,,,,

I really appreciate the input I get from players like yourself. it's hard out here to keep going and going. Encouragement is like gold and you and all the other AZers that comment on the thread make me work harder than ever.

I did 3 free lessons tonight. Just had to see some smiles. And yes there were three great big smiles when it was over.

Thanks again geno......

Another Fan of Perfect Aim

You are a positive for pool Geno. I follow your posts too. Although we only talked for a minute as I was leaving Tunica, I could see that you are happy doing what you are doing. I seem to run into a lot of people in the pool world that could use a trip to their doctor to get a script for an antidepressant. I recently have made a promise to myself to stay away from negetive influences, and it has really helped with my pool playing, and my life in general. I am even sleeping better. Please don't let the nay sayers get in the way of your goals. There a lot of us out there that are cheering you on. Hope to see you at the Derby.

It was nice to meet you Gene. I wish we could have gotten together again last night but we just ran out of time.

I have seen were you mention free lessons in the past, and I always assumed they were more like a teaser lesson. I want everyone to know Gene spent at least an hour on one free lesson and over an hour on the other. Gene was teaching for the GAME not the cash!

Well done Gene!

If you are still in Olathe the weekend after Thanksgiving I will see you up there!

Ken

I love the updates Geno, every one else needs to keep it shut unless they are adding something to the thread.

I'm VERY interested to see if a player can make it on the road. in today's age where info travels now, the hustles of yester-year won't work. So the question in my mind, is can a guy make it, making honest games, and working at it.

best, and good luck to Zach and Gene.

Well it was fun in Oklahoma and Ken you showed us plenty of Oklahoma hospitality. They're luck they have you around there to help add the the aura of the pool world there.

It's off to Olathe to seek our fortune:rolleyes:

New adventure is waiting in the state of Kansas.

Off to see the wizard.

Two men a van and the road.....

Thanks

Hi Gene,

just wanted you to know you are very much appreciated here to. Your info has tuned up my game and understanding for it a lot, one of those tweaks you really liked to know several years ago:rolleyes:.

I do recall that we also had a conversation about ld shafts on pm also, that was when you first tried the ...... out, I also think I told you that it would probably miss out in something that you was used to and liked...........

Anyway, please keep posting because I truly enjoy it, my best of hopes to both of you on "the road". Do please have him fight for it, took so long for most of us....:embarrassed2:

Take care from Sweden

There are many players here on AZ that have been through many different situations over the years.

I'm taking a player that I worked with about 2 1/2 years ago and having him come on the road with me. He's taken some road trips himself but I don't think they were very successful.

His game jumped allot from AA player to Master player shortly after I worked with him. But since then he just stayed at kind of the same level. Not a top master player but about the middle of the field.

I'm going to teach him how to eat, sleep, exercise and survive on the road. Share every aspect of my road experience 24/7. On the job training.
And work some more to refine his pool skills so he can compete with anyone. Capable of beating anyone in the world in a race to 9 to 15.

I think this can be done. He has the desire, now I will see if he has the drive.

I'm looking for input from players that have been through this before.

Do you think this can be done. Why or why not? :idea2:

I think what your doing will give you the answer you seek....let us know how it went in sixty....give us various outcomes and we'll all vote.
