WTB Black Boar shaft.Must have proof it's a BB

Looking for an authentic BB shaft.Lets see if there are any out there. Please PM here or,
Ibuycueas@ gmail.com Thanks.
Marc

Well, i have a bunch of Black Boars.
Just a thought though.

NONE of the shafts have any identifying markers on them that prove they are black boar shafts. So i'm sure a lot of people will be wondering exactly what type of proof you are looking for.

I know that none of my black boar cues came with any type of letter of authenticity either as i got them before they became collectors items.

Good luck with your search.

Fyi

There is a way to look and tell , ask Tony he will tell ya one way to spot a real one cause of the way he makes them everytime

Shadowmoss has 10 and they are numbered.

I forget maybe $600 each? PM him. He was thinking of keeping a the shafts with his favorite numbers. They are also signed if memory serves.
Good luck,
Nick :)

So, can someone explain what would make a BB shaft so special? Are they made out of some unobtainium maple that only grows in a specific region?

In a nut-shell, demand vs availability.

As in all cues, particularly BB cues, people are looking for the quality of build, playability, etc. Tony is extremely selective of his shaft wood and very, very meticulous in his production techniques. It is easy to tell when you are looking at an intricate cue butt, but much harder when examining a shaft, but it is there. The quality of the wood, the precision of the construction, the way the shaft snugs up to the BB butt, etc.

Why does a Szamboti, Searing, Hercek, etc cost what they do? Quality is always in demand, and it always costs.

Well Joe

They are just that good. It is as simple as that. If it is signed Tony made it. And he isn't making any more. He needs every one for the Cues he builds.
Nick :)

I spoke to Tony today and he will sell you a shaft if you have other work done, such as re-finish and re-wrap.This may be the only way:(
Marc

let me test it and i will tell you if it is real BB shaft and i will look at the specs of it
This is the only way ....Taper, Insert, compression on Joint>>>>many more places to look and compare .....
Chris

black boar shafts

I would check with some of the highend cue dealers for an extra boar shaft. Cornerstone, highendcues ken, scott murphy etc

I bought a ferrule-less shaft recently and the cost direct from Tony was $500 and $450 for the normal ferrule shaft. THEY DON'T HAVE ANY MAKERS MARKINGS which doesn't help. Possibly if you buy a signed custom or request marking you will get them but in general NO.

I have had quite a few earlier black boars and you can normally tell by the joint on the shaft if it is a Black Boar as he uses a particular rounded brass joint which has wood over the top for the compression fit. I have had friends who own them and we have laid out of 10 or so shafts within our combined collections and they are all pretty much identical.

However, here is a message that I received from Donnie at Black Boar when I purchased my shaft without sending him the butt of my AS8 "A quick warning, those older AS-8 cues occasionally had a slightly larger pin than the other 4-pointers of the era. If you have feel a lot of friction and/or hear squeaking when screwing the shaft onto the cue, let us know and we will arrange to adjust the shaft's interior to better fit your cue. Unfortunately there is no way for us to know beforehand whether or not you had one of these pins"

I also spoke to Tony and he said the only way he could identify one of his positively would be to cut it in half. I suspect to check the wood rings etc. So that is not a lot of good to anybody looking to buy one and ensure it is original unless you are looking for a 3 piece cue.

This is all of my knowledge on Black Boar shafts and I hope that it helps you in some way.

Whilst on the subject of quality shafts the best shaft wood that I have seen on a cue is from Tad. The Black Boars are incredible and brilliant hitters. However Tads are just as good if not better and they are a fraction of the price. From what I have owned the Tad shafts were better than any of the 10 Black Boar shafts that I inspected previously including my new ferrule-less shaft. Apart from the ones mentioned in the quote, Tascarella also make excellent shafts. Disclaimer: this is only my humble opinion as a cue collector and from my preference as a player - the bottom line is 'whatever floats your boat'.

However, you are not going to find a a huge margin of difference in the playablity of the top cue makers shafts...and considering that the older Black Boars only came with one shaft finding someone willing to part with an extra shaft that they purchased separately may be difficult. Moreover, anyone who bought a newer model with 2 shafts may be unwilling to let go as it would significantly decrease the sale-ability of their cues should they wish to re-sell. Moreover, people with 3 or more shafts with a cue that is a different topic altogether...<add the first line of my disclaimer here>

Lastly, even if you buy a shaft that has been certified as a Black Boar by another owner lets say by the joint (which is what I would look for) how do you know if the taper is original? as many that I have seen have a differing tapers which is is difficult to know whether another cuemaker has had his hands on them. In general when a BB cue comes with 2 shafts they tend to be different specifications eg, one fat at say 13mm the other skinnier at 12.5mm from what I have seen anyway.. Also the tips that he uses compliment the shafts etc and a replacement tip or ferrule will also impact upon the original construction of the shafts and intended hit and pitch. lots of variables here.

I don't think I have anymore to say ....hang-on wait a minute pick up the phone and go to Tony direct on 301-277-3236 or email blackboarcues@gmail.com . This is what I did after weighing it all up and these guys REALLY know what they are talking about and for the sake of saving a couple of hundred this is the only way to go...

cheers

He won't sell separate

I spoke to Tony yesterday and he won't do it:)
Thanks for all the help.Have. Great day.

Send the Butt to Dennis Searing and get him to make you a shaft for it! It will be better for sure! Tony will not make one for you? Odd these cuemakers won't do work on their cues....Kinda takes away the desire to own one of their cues! Barry Szamboti,Pete Tascarella, Joel Herseck, Murray Tucker and John Showman will repair and make shafts for their cues I will stick with them! I don't own a Black Boar or Sugartree and have no desire to own one as the cuemakers mentioned above play better and they care about their customers and cues! Bobco729 had some extra BB Shafts at one time you may check with him....Good Luck, Ron

That stinks...

It's hard to own a cue made by someone who doesn't want to work on it for you. I wish you luck in whatever you decide.

Good luck in your search.
