Crazy Infuriating Experience

So last night I joined a new team full of people I have been friendly with for a while but don't really know all that well. I joined the team hoping to get to know these people better because I figured they were all good people.

I went up against another 5 and lost because I was having a bad night. It was one of those nights when you just can't make a ball no matter how hard you try.

To make matters worse I have struggled with a diagnosed case of severe ADD my whole life and some nights it rears its ugly head and I just can't play pool to save my life. We all know you need your full concentration to play well in pool and when my condition strikes that is just not possible.

After having lost I went and hit around some balls on a practice table until the captain of the team walked up to me with this look on his face like he was going to deliver bad news.

He told me that the team had asked him to lie to me and say they didn't want me on the team because they had already promised the slot to someone else. He didn't feel comfortable with this and told me the real reason was that they thought I had sandbagged the match but he did not agree with the rest of the team.

For obvious reasons this infuriated me but since I could tell the captain was not involved and he has been a long time friend and clearly wanted me to stay on the team I didnt get mad at him.

I did however blow up at the others on the team when I went to put my sticks away. I think I made them all feel like shit but at this point I could care less if they reverse their decision to let me back on the team. I wouldn't care about this whole experience if I didn't respect the people on the team and consider them all good people. It hurts more than a little to have your opinions of some people reverse so totally in one instant.

Sorry for rambling but the whole point of this post is to make people think twice before accusing someone of sandbagging especially in a league like NAPA where sandbagging makes no sense and the loser loses 2-4.

Life can be frustrating, especially when those pesky humans start making think.

Fukc 'em! Be glad that you got out so quickly and that you can go/ not go to the pool room whenever the F you want to.

I agree with the folks that said best to get out quick. The ones that really hurt your feeling are when people lie to you a long time...then you find out they are trash......

Good riddance..

Very Lucky

Consider yourself very fortunate. You only wasted one night with a team that ultimately would not of been worth your time and effort.

I hope you shrug it off quickly and find people you can enjoy the game with.

Looks like there isn't a match.

Pool teams and friendships get confused sometimes. Find a game you are comfortable with and just have fun. Don't let it get you down.

100% true...have had many friendships tested after APA handicap went up, and they didnt want the high number on the team anymore.

Only 11 posts, and already made a golden one here. This is the most true thing about league play. If you're there to win instead of have fun, it's gonna be a bad time!

Actually the "concerned with numbers" comment is off the mark.

The team didn't want him because they thought HE was too concerned with numbers. like he took numbers so seriously that he'd sandbag just to keep a low rating.

Their concern is that they're playing with someone dishonest who is more interested in gaming the system than just shooting real pool. That's a completely valid concern.

Sounds like they misjudged him, but probably they need a warning if a new teammate has a medical condition that might render him useless on any given night.

Not just any leagues either. i play BCA ACS, and APA...its the APA league that forces the changing of players that causes the most problems. I have watched as player after player gets the boot cause they went up omne handicap number. Team captian wants the best baggers possible, and when you rise too hi, your gone. Takes the fun out of it big time.

I disagree with this post. It is no ones business whether I have a medical condition or not unless I decide to tell them. The point of the post was for people to not judge anyone too quickly because in general they don't know the whole story.

I was thinking along these same lines.

If they truly were concerned that you were sandbagging and they wouldn't want you on their team if that was the case. That would be something for AZ to celebrate for once.

To the OP:
If this happened to me, I'm sure I would have been a bit ticked off at the time too. However, after reflecting on it I would probably want to have a discussion with those team members about what happened (at least some of them). I would want to let them know that you weren't throwing the match and you're the kind of guy that gives it his all but you just had a bad night.

It's quite possible that your first impression of these guys as being good people was actually accurate and they just handled this situation very poorly. In the long run, this may have been the exact sort of team that you would want to be on.

It sucks when crap like this happens.

but who with the least bit of common sense would accuse someone of sandbagging after 1 match? Maybe if it was the fourth match of the season and there was a pattern sure. I guess they had the expectation that he'd win every game? Seriously, he was against someone of the same skill level and they went to 2-4. That sounds totally normal to me, people have good days and bad and it wasn't a shutout.

To be perfectly honest and blunt...the team probably has too many players on it already. They thought your game sucks and you probably couldn't help the team win when needed.

Any other excuses are just excuses.

You should stay friendly with them and respect them for telling you after just one match. They could of kept you on the team and coming every week and you'd be sitting the bench.

Hopefully you have time to get on another team that needs you.

Did you tell them before hand about your severe ADD which hinders your game some nights? If so, then what they did was uncalled for. If not, next time you might want to do that.

I disagree. If someone is counting on you to be somewhere, and you can't guarantee it because of a medical condition, then I think it IS their business. To what extent you tell them is up to you, but they do have a right to know.
