Frost vs Alex - 1 Pocket Match on Monday for $40,000

Exactly - I would say on this performance, you can drop Scott down to the fifth best one pocket player in the world.

iphones and the web have made it hard on road players but prior to those days Ronnie Allen had to travel across country dropping money everywhere he went to convince everyone he was washed up. Then on the trip home he collected all the "returns on his investment".

Now because of a Free Stream maybe all those "Pro's" that wanted 9/8 or 10/8 will get in the box, Even... I believe Ronnie's seed money was around $10,000 but that was almost 30 years ago so with inflation $20K is about right and it didn't take 6-months driving all over the place.

I think the nature of my work makes me suspicious

In most cases I agree with that. Not always though playing the pinoys as mentioned by JAM. They are so comfortable playing on very bad tables. IMO a better table would have improved Alex play maybe 10% but Scotts play maybe 25%.

I disagree, but that's what makes the world go round.

Freddie <~~~ thinks better equipment favors the better player linearly

I didn't see it but it just sounds like Scott had a bad set and got stuck early 4-0....sound about right?

Give credit to Alex, but judging from those who watched it the people who I believe know one pocket more on the forum (just an opinion) make it sound like it wasn't his best overall performance.

I agree Scott was off, for sure. He plays a really aggressive style, and when you don't have your top gear with that style a good player will punish you. That sums it up decently, but it doesn't tell the whole story.

Scott is still a fantastic one pocket player, however he was out shot, out moved, and out dressed last night:-) I'm sure they will play again and a different Scott will show up, but for now you gotta tip your hat off to Alex... he played great and deserved to win.

....on any given day?

..I watched the first 3 games when Alex went up 3-0, and then I went to sleep....After reading all the posts in this thread, I see a lot of people saying Scott didn't bring his "A" game......I have definitely seen him play better, but I observed a long time ago how, when 2 great players match up, or even 2 players of almost equal ability, when one starts out strong and wins a few games, the other seems to play weaker.....it's almost like a law of physics, or maybe just human nature....psychology is such a big part of it all.....I am very impressed by Alex's win; he must indeed be the all-around best player of pool in the world........I was surprised the other day to find that he has also been a snooker champion in Canadian and perhaps world competition...?

In the new modern era we don't say that the bet is 20k. In order to make it sound much bigger we say it's a $40,000 match because both side PUT UP 20k.

So like poker, it's a $40,000 pot, or in the middle.

I prefer to call it what it is, one pocket 8 ahead for 2.5k a game. But that doesn't sound as sexy as 8 ahead for $40,000.

Everything's marketing baby.

Perhaps. But in the early days of streaming matches, I recall matches being described as a two-player invitational winner-take-all tournament with a large entry fee. I think it was an effort to go more public with and legitimize what might otherwise have been characterized as a gambling match.

I dont want to go through all these posts but could somebody please fill me in.

Did alex finish it and win 8 ahead last night?

I haven't played Alex, but I have watched him play and I do know a little about one pocket. It's not like I haven't played top players to notice the difference. I've played Earl Strickland, Danny Smith, Jesse Boweman and Darren Appleton in tournament play. I've also gambled with Joey gray, David G, and Scott Frost and Chris Gentile. Scott is a different animal.

Believe me, it's not just Scott's firepower that makes him tough.

As for the time Scott got beat by Whitey in Des Moines, I give him a pass. He had just gotten demoralized by Shane on a bar table and wasn't in the right frame of mind to take down the cash.

It looked like Scott just played SVB on the bar table again!!! Just poking with you buddy I know you probably bet on the freezer.

Do you guys think the big bet may have effected Scotts game?

Scott has played for well over 6 figure$ before and won, Alex just out played him the bet had nothing to do with it.
