A message from Emily Duddy to all pool players

Mikey - if someone has to ask that question, then they are just feeding into what is one of the things wrong with pool today. Lack of a pro tour for both men and women.

You can ACT professional or unprofessional but you are still a pro based on your ability. Just ask Ron Artest, Lleyton Hewitt, AJ Pierzynski, Terrell Owens, or Ndamukong Suh as an example.

Most sponsors especially in pool get almost no ROI... So it becomes a matter of exposure... Based on exposure where is the ROI? The player who hits two events and actively promotes or the player who hits all ten? The 2/10er is 8 missed opportunities to promote to 8 new potential sales groups for the same $$$ or more than 10/10er is.

Would one hand out one $100 business card to one person or hand out 1,000 $ .10 cards to 1000 people to advertise and expect a ROI?

Great questions and responses BB... Thank you!

Why do you keep saying 10 events ......I know, I know you said it was just an example. But is a poor if not terrible example. There were 3 WPBA events in 2012 - or at least that is what their website shows. The last listed WPBA in 2013 was only $1,500 added.

And if you think Emily Duddy (only using her as an example since she is the subject of this thread) can give a sponsor more exposure by playing in 10 events than say Jeanette Lee who could play in ZERO events and spend two months over in Korea Danncing with the Stars, I wonder where you received your business degree or where your background is?

Interesting...

I see now why my opinion differs from a few of you... Strictly ABILITY is the measuring stick to be a pro... Is this only in pool or in all sports?

What of the players who never see the big shows? Minor league baseball? Sparring partners in contact sports? Players who play for a team and never see game time (practice players / bench warmers) but still draw the minimum team salary of $250,000 a year? Are these players any less professional than their high paid team mates? Do they still write professional athlete on there tax forms?

Most of the above players can not hold a candle to the elites in there field but are definitely still considered to be professionals.

I would not have thought to base professional status solely on ability alone. How about a golfer like Bobby Jones? He played w/ the best and beat many of them. Has his place in golf history as one of the best. But is considered to have only played the game as an amateur. But based on ability alone he would have to be a Pro... Correct?

Thank you all for your insight and opinions... Great conversation and banter.

this is still going on? I respond sparingly on this forum cause like Elton John:

I suggest you all listen to this song while reading this!

Emily travels halfway around the world on an invitation from a tournament that pays $34,000 for first. I think the fact she was invited to this tournament qualifies her to call herself a professional pool player. The person who beat her 7-0 is Chieh-Yu Chou. She won this tournament last year. Place 3rd this year. It was in a round robin and it seems Emily went 1-3 in that portion of the tournament. And after losing that match Emily still cashed. SHE GOT PAID $300! Even if the whole field got paid, i don't know, she still got paid to shoot against the world's best female players.

People always debate what a pool pro is? I know it used to be "if you collect more money then you pay to get in AN OPEN tournament...you are a pro." Did the expenses of that trip outweigh the $300 she collected. I do not know if you can say that. I know airfare, room and food cost more then $300....BUT what is exposure worth? Someone posted a picture of Emily on the cover of Inside Pool for April 2013. It seems Emily is marketing herself quite well.

All the critics should put yourself in Emily's position. Travel 9,000 miles to shoot in a tournament and you play on the main table vs SVB. When you play someone with way more experience then you sometimes the collar gets tight and you cannot function. Thinking is not clear and result is horrid play.

That is as much nice stuff as I can write on this abortion of a thread topic. The photographer who put the closeup of Emily's face on the other post that spawned this one should retire. He should smash all of his cameras. Just posting those pictures of Emily was pretty stupid....or was it? You could see the pores in her face. The foundation was caked on. Her eyebrows? He needs a new hobby. The makeup on her eye's? 2 of 10 for the face close up photo.

Emily has a very nice body. She dresses confidently and wears 6 inch heels!!! While shooting pool. I would rather watch Emily shoot and take 12 ball in hands to run a rack of 9 ball then watch Archer take 6 hours to run a 3 pack and vacumn the whole TAR studio in the process. On her hands and knees on a pool table? This is an awesome photo. But when I see this photo the last thing I was thinking of is "i wonder what speed she is?" What i was thinking when I saw this photo was "i wish i was racking right now"! Mission accomplished on that one. But you posted those pictures on the same forum that argued for 50 pages on what it takes to be a world champion WITH a world champion. How could you not expect crap? Lets all get together and sing koon-beye-yaaa...not happening here. I think you expected attention and that is why you posted them. Someone stated earlier any press is good press.

Emily seems to have been shooting competitively for 6 years. Her game has not caught up to her angry eyebrow focused face. I think her game has peaked but her career is just starting and I wish her the best!!!

Is John Schmidt, USA, a pro? He won the US Open and the 14.1 world championship. He is young and don't shoot in pro tournaments. He is one of the greatest players alive and he rides dirtbikes instead of shooting in tournaments. What does this say about the state of pro pool, when one of the greatest pool players living, USA, does not compete.

So if Emily wants to be marketed to society as a pool pro...and the masses will follow it who cares? More power to her. Sell that snake oil Emily and get em all healed stat!!!

I post on here today cause this place is awesome for stream info, tourney results and a non stop avalanche of foolishness.

So here is to April Fool's Day aka AZ Billiards Forum Day.

Except for a small % of pool players no one follows pool. NO ONE!!! Accept this fact. 500,000 people minimum shoot in pool leagues. They spend thousands of dollars a year on this game. And you cannot get 1,500 of them to watch pro's shoot on the internet for FREE!!!!! All the successful people in pool have developed amateur ponzi sceme leagues. The APA 9 ball vegas match was won by a team that substituted players on their team for the Vegas match. And people are pissed at Emily posting photo's on here and referring to herself as a pro?

The photo's were a leader to exposure leading up to her magazine cover and everyone ate it up. All 20 of you.

I would like to end this by stating there is a man. A man with love in his heart. As difficult as love is to prove to the earth he has been proving this love for 38 years. His name is Barry Behrman. His love is manifested through a pool Tournament called the US Open. The AZ community has seemed to bail on this man. Let us all embrace the love that Barry is sharing with the pool world. Support the US Open. I know with people like Charlie Williams behind Barry B. the sky is the limit for the love that is being created for us all.

Pro pool players...ask yourself a question...Is getting paid immediately more important then love.

i am sure all the pro's will prove to all 90 of your fans around the world that MONEY gets the 6 ball and two on the wire from LOVE and will all support Barry B and his quest to fuse Pool and Love into one harmonious feeling of peacefulness

God Bless Emily, Barry, Charlie and all the other people who show that love conquers all!!!

A Jeanette Lee is an elite and is not even in the same market as a lower tier player. An elite is going to cost you 10 or 20 times what the lower level players would cost you... Therefore the ROI would have to be a minimum of 10 or 20 times that of the lower level player just to produce an equal ROI.

Do you think JL is advertising for her spool sponsors on DWTS? Will anyone who watches the show learn of a cue company, table company, etc. because JL was on the show? JL is marketing JL as she should. But her pool sponsors will only gain the power of saying that she performed on DWTS Korea to help increase her celebrity appeal to their potential market.

I do not claim to have a degree and be the end all... Just a guy on a keyboard trying to see every ones opinions and using them to modify my one. Unlike many I realize that thinking I know and truly knowing are two very different things.

Great points Watchez and thanks for the input.

I see the point about being a pro and still acting unprofessionally and agree 100%. But it is my opinion that these players are still pros based on the fact that they are paid to play or trying to earn an income from playing not on there ability. But I do see your point of view and it is definitely another way to look at it.

Thanks for giving me another view point.

I will never get back these wasted 2 minutes of my life. Next time respond even more sparingly....

The other day I was driving off road looking for this pride. I’d just spotted them in a tree not far away, but to get to them, I had to cross a dry creek with very tall grasses and scrub.

I wasn’t sure how deep the creek was, so I had to get out of the car and investigate. I walked to the front of the car and a bit ahead of it to make sure I wouldn’t get stuck if I drove further. It seemed fine. and I got into the car again.

As soon as I shut the door, a lion shot out of the grass near the car and ran away. It came from very near the car, and I must have been close to stepping on it on my little walk.

The lion had probably been lying there surprised, and probably a bit scared, as I got out, just next to it. When I closed the door, it took the chance to escape.

The best time to spot a pride is in the late summer....

Isn't 2 minutes worth making the world a better place through love?

Ill tell you what love doesn't do.... Pay bills!!!

I don't know Barry but he dropped the ball for, oh i dont know... The last 3 years with this owing players money BS!! Maybe he should sell 5 or 6 of his high end Mercedes and make sure there is money in the prize fund. That or take money from certain parts of his 70+ table poolhall. Its bad enough that he reneged on his promise to have all past winners free entry. I understand it but it doesn't look good on him.

what is time

i guarantee all the won prize money is spent. But in 1,000 years people will still be talking of the selfless demonstrations of the purest emotion ever exhibited by a human on earth...Barry Behrman and his love for pool, people and the US Open.

Barry is selfless..We should all follow his lead. Pool would be popular again. And I know with people like Barry and Charlie involved in pool it is heading in the right direction.

This is another way pool and golf are different but also somewhat alike. In golf if you play in a tournament and accept prize money instead of a trophy you are technically considered a pro.
I know many players that took prize money in a smaller tournament and then tried to play in a big amatuer event and couldn`t play because they were reported by either the tournament people or someone else.It happened in highschool to a friend of mine and a good friend a few years ago.
It used to take 5-6 years to regain your ametuer status back I`m not sure how long it takes now.

The alike part would be that there are 1000`s of golfers that take prize money in tournaments every year and they couldn`t even come close to making a living playing golf but by the rules of golf they are pro`s,even if they don`t play like the top pro`s.

So why is it that in golf you are a pro (as long as you take a cash prize)no matter what level you play but in pool you are only a pro if you play good enough to make a living doing it or can beat a male pro player.

In golf you have the pga tour, .com tour and several smaller tours that all have pros but they may not play good enough for the pga tour.By most peoples standards on here that would mean that the lower tour players are not pro`s. Correct?
I know a few players on the lower tours and they work another job also besides the tour so they are not making their living off the tour.
Just making a point.

Most sponsors especially in pool get almost no ROI... So it becomes a matter of exposure... Based on exposure where is the ROI? Great questions and responses BB... Thank you!
They arent pieces of paper that are handed out, they are executors of success: the winner won as a result of the sponsors' contribution.

the winner has a winner photograph that will last forever. The also ran...not so much.

Keeping it real..... Good post! WPBA "pro's" can do all the photo shoots they like, I'll be impressed when, and if, they play like Karen Corr. Karen isn't doing any photo shoots but she runs out like a beast.

We had a WPBA pro here in the early-mid 90's that was consistently ranked #6-8 in the WPBA, she quit pool after a 19-20 year old Bartram gave her the 6 ball and beat her out of like 20 games.

A MESSAGE TO THOSE THAT LOVE POOL, EQUALITY, ENCOURAGEMENT & SUPPORT AND THOSE THAT HATE JUDGES, CRITICS, RAILBIRDS, HATERS, & COWARDS:

I'M SO GRATEFUL TO HAVE MANY FAMILY, FRIENDS AND FANS THAT SUPPORT ME IN MY POOL ENDEAVORS, BUT THERE HAS BEEN A GROUP OF HATERS ON WOMEN POOL PLAYERS THAT HAS NEVER BEEN CALLED OUT. WELL IT'S TIME FOR ME TO CALL OUT THESE NASTY PEOPLE AND ANYONE ELSE THAT WANTS TO BRING PEOPLE DOWN!

OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS THERE HAS BEEN A PATHETIC GROUP OF HATERS & CRITICS ATTACKING WOMEN POOL PLAYERS ON PUBLIC POOL FORUMS, IT IS DISRESPECTFUL AND PATHETIC, IT IS IN POOR TASTE AND IT SYMBOLIZES THE WORST EGO IN THE POOL WORLD. IT TRULY EMBODIES ONE OF THE BIGGEST REASON'S OUR SPORT IS NOT MORE SUCCESSFUL.

The player's that have been attacked the most in these forums are Myself (Emily Duddy), Borana Andoni, and Jennifer Barretta. The 3 of us are great players, we continue to put in the time in on our game, we compete non-stop putting in our own $, and give back to other players, leagues, and charities as much as possible. We also put ourselves out there to further pool. We are not at the top of the ranking's yet, but every great player has a journey to the top. I think we are being scrutinized because we have been business savvy and taken opportunities made possible by our marketability. Well we are in America and that is how it works. The 3 of us are great people, with big hearts, who are generous and kind. We have talent, passion, and a determination to succeed. Yes we have gotten press, but that is because of who we are and what we stand for.

The list of our current titles, rankings, or stats is completely irrelevant. At the moment the pool world is working on becoming consistent, but up until now there is no good system for ranking players that are professional, men or women. The tours are inconsistent and struggling. The only way to help make that happen in the future is by sticking together!!!!

WHAT THEY CRITICIZE IS OUT OF IGNORANCE, JEALOUS, AND SPITE:

1.) They degrade the level of our play when most of them have no idea how we can play or what we are capable of. Maybe they saw a youtube video, maybe they saw one match, maybe they are going based off rankings or stats, maybe they saw one tournament. Whatever the case may be, no one knows the level of someone's game accept the player themselves. I'm so sick of all these critics and commentator's trying to sum up a player's skill level after watching them play one time. Maybe they had a bad or good match or tournament. It's so easy to sit on the sidelines, behind a computer screen or a television and judge. It is true ignorance. JEN, BORANA AND MYSELF HAVE PLAYED HUNDREDS OF TOURNAMENTS, PUT IN THOUSANDS OF PRACTICE HOURS, AND HAVE BEEN PLAYING/COMPETING FOR YEARS AND DECADES. HOW MUCH OF THAT DID YOU HATERS WATCH US PLAY? PROBABLY NONE!

2.) They bash the way we dress, promotional photos, and projects. We don't care if people don't like us or find us attractive. The truth is we are trying to add a new level of marketability to the world of pool. We are trying to push boundaries. We are doing our best to start new projects and to help the pool world grow stronger. But most importantly we are being ourselves and showing the world who we are. Maybe you should try it sometime and come out from behind your keyboard.

AS A POOL PLAYER OR A FAN OF POOL, IF YOU ARE CONNECTED TO THE POOL WORLD PLEASE HELP SILENCE THESE DISRESPECTFUL PEOPLE TOGETHER. THEY ARE HURTING THE SUCCESS OF OUR SPORT. IF YOU ARE HATER WILL JUST PLEASE STOP!

I AM A FAN OF FREE SPEECH AND IF YOU WANT TO START A FORUM ON ANY TOPIC OF YOUR CHOOSING THEN BY ALL MEANS, BUT WHY ARE YOU SO MISERABLE THAT YOU ARE ATTACKING PLAYERS BY NAME AND DEGRADING THEIR REPUTATIONS WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW THEM OR ANYTHING ABOUT THEM. WHATEVER YOU THINK YOU KNOW IS HEARSAY OR YOUR DISTORTED VIEW OF REALITY. WHY DON'T YOU TRY TO GET TO KNOW US FIRST. WE ARE VERY DOWN-TO-EARTH PEOPLE.

BOTTOM LINE IS THE WHOLE WORLD NEEDS TO SUPPORT OTHER PEOPLE RIGHT NOW IN ORDER TO CAUSE POSITIVE CHANGE. THE POOL WORLD WILL NEVER GROW AND BECOME SUCCESSFUL IF WE ARE FIGHTING AMONGST OURSELVES.

Emily :
to be fair, I looked as far back as a year and a half and didn't see where anyone had attacked you.

Lend me a hand here and help me understand where all this is coming from.
Post up a link to some of these attacks you're saying happen.

Two of the three you show don't mention her. One that does, he "takes it back" FWIW.

I'm still listening though.
