You are right that this isn't really constructive. But that's probably the ONLY part that you're right about.
Emily didn't start that thread because she feels women pool players aren't given much respect. She started that thread because a select few of her friends aren't given much respect. And its true. They aren't. I'm not going to name names, but it seems there are a handful of NY female players who are very hellbent on having the world perceive and actually call them "pros" and, as such, give them the same respect that they would Allison Fisher, Kelly Fisher, Karen Corr, Jasmin Ouschan, etc., etc.. The grand irony here being that these NY females very clearly do NOT play at that level yet. Granted, the names I just listed are the cream of the crop. Still, there are about 10-15 others I could mention who may not play at Karen's level per se, but still play MUCH stronger than some of these ladies who are determined to be given that same respect.
The three names attached to the other thread (and it should be noted were attached by Emily herself) were Emily Duddy, Borana Andoni, and Jennifer Baretta. It should be noted that Jennifer had no place being brought up at all because she is a much stronger player than Emily is and has earned her title as a 'pro'. Borana also plays fairly well from what I've seen. Is she a 'pro' level player? I don't know. I don't really know her. But I also don't see her setting up websites claiming such. They may exist. I don't really know. But it seems like Borana is determined to get to that level of play by putting in the hard work and the time it takes to get there.
Some of these other ladies just seem to think that having a sponsor makes them a 'pro'. And while technically, that may be true to a degree, it doesn't mean you deserve to be categorized with some of the best players in your field. It doesn't mean you deserve to be afforded the same level of respect.
Make no mistake. This had NOTHING to do with hating women players or women pros. It had nothing to do with 'hating' at all. It was more about someone who wants to be a pro so badly that she seems to be skipping the 'get your game to that level first' step.
