US 9 Ball Open

The US Open has gone through some difficult, F'd up times, often via the ownership's demise.

I hope they can mend some fences (Jay includued :) ).

When a top pro says they are back to back US Open Champions (Nick, Mika, Darren. Or Earl X's 5! How many times have we heard that?)... That carries weight. Inarguable.

Is the Open done and gone? That's to each his own to speculate IMO.

I'm going. Again. Many years running. It's close to me (5 hour drive). It's my annual 4/5 day mecca vacation that has always yielded top pro's globally, great commaraderie, coverage, commentary, hotel access (without hoofing it) and icing on the cake at Q-Maters. ;)

As much as I DO care @ how pool players are treated... as a spectator, I spectate. The US Open has always provided front row.

I do hate the drama of money shortage, BUT... if you go to Va Beach and watch without predisposition of the behind the scenes struggle??? If you're an enthusiast? It's enthralling. It's amazing.

I am not a nuthugger for anyone. Just saying - the US Open, front row, and in the hallways, in Q, and wherever it leads you - IS FRONT ROW FOR 36 YEARS NOW.

JMHO. I have limited opportunities to be up close to the BEST. That's where they have been to date.

Roberta, your intentions I do not question. Your objectivity however is something that is highly questionable.

I never said I was objective, all I have done is state my opinion. Since I'm not involved in the running of it I have no need to be objective. I do fully understand some of the players are upset. I also fully support the ones I'm friends with as well.

Huh?

I just cant believe that piece of sh*t behrman gets to keep running the tournament. Every year theres more problems and the first place money gets smaller. Absolutely pathetic! If his goal is to ruin pool he sure is a success. Lol

:scratchhead:

And why would you worry about first place money?

Are you that good?:woot:

No need to be objective? You have your own agenda apparently. You never answered my question of how you would feel if you had been stiffed/slow paid by team Behrman after going into your own kick for entry fee/traveling expenses, food & lodging etc. Barry wants the entry fees as soon as he can get them but pays the players/staff etc. whenever he feels like it. Good work if you can get it. Yet you continue to support his business practices. Your nothing if not loyal but you missed the course on objectivity.

I hope most of the top pros show up...I scheduled my vacation this year to coincide with the Open. Not going...but definitely going to be tuning in net-wise.

I will once again say I have no need to be objective. Yes I would be upset if I was late being paid. Why is what I think so important to you? What I think has no impact on you or your life & I don't understand why you would use all this energy to search my past posts to question my thoughts but if that is how you want to spend your time then I'm certainly not going to try to tell you how to live your life. . Just because I'm friends with someone & like them doesn't mean I agree with everything they do, you can like someone but not like their actions. Anyway, I think I'm done trying to explain myself to you. Have a nice evening.

Last I checked, this was a pool "forum" and, as such, is made up of people posting their opinions. By nature, opinions may be devoid of facts and contain individual biases.

While I have read some very well written, objective missives on here, the vast majority are not. That doesn't preclude me from reading them. It also doesn't preclude one from going somewhere else if one doesn't like the lack of objectivity. Calling someone out for post non-objective opinions on a forum is ludicrous in my view. Heck, spelling and grammar don't even count here.

If you want objective reading material, try the dictionary. (I was about to say a newsfeed but even those lack objectivity.)

Just my opinion, of course. Your mileage may vary.

I will say this, Roberta. You are very supportive of your friends and you are a better person than I. After what Team Behrman and Co. have done, I couldn't see myself remaining friends with them.

Did I read the press release correctly?

A total of 9 tables?
How do you run a large tournament with 9 tables?

But they are saying they will add $50- $72,000 based on the field.

Perhaps they need to look at the dynamics of running an event.
I am just guessing - but the largest field they can comfortabley do on 9 tables is about 128.

(Just wish people would do their homework before making press releases.
Wishing the event all the best - I would hate to see the US OPen go away).

Thanks, I'm not blind to any of my friends faults but I also don't judge anyone & I never will.

I for one will keep this option in mind per my reading material. I will do the same per my option to stick my head in the sand and mutter incoherently, "hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil/I see nothing." "Nothing to see here folks move along now", lol.

So said many of Bernard Madoff's friends. The pool players and staffers who depend on prompt payments to support their families and keep them going to the next events may tell a different tale.

Roberta, can you tell me who wrote this?

"I've written checks in felt tip before & there was never any problem. I know I'm one of Barry's biggest defenders although I do know the things he's done, I really hope there's some other explanation...."

or this

"I have always been & always will continue to be a friend of Barry Berhman. I'm not saying he's done no wrong because he has; he fully realizes that & takes full responsibility for it. It's just my opinion but I really don't feel that anyone has the right to judge or complain about the way he does business unless it DIRECTLY affects them, which would the players & others involved in the tournament; not that that's going to stop anyone from doing it I know.

I'm sure I'll catch plenty of flack for stating this as I already have in the short time I've been posting here, which doesn't bother me in the least. I will continue to respectfully agree to disagree with people who have opinions different than mine because everyone is entitled to think whatever they want.

I have no doubt that there will be a US Open 9 Ball Championship next October, he will find a way."

or this one

"This is in no way comparable to rape or any other violent crime, you're comparing apples to oranges. Unless you're one of the people that's owed money then it doesn't affect you & is frankly not your business. You want to judge Barry for what he's done so I'm sure you must be perfect & have never done anything wrong. It's not stopping the players from coming nor is it stopping the fans (of which I'm one) from coming. All I did was state what I thought, if you don't agree that's fine."

Roberta, your objectivity on this matter leaves quite a bit to be desired. At a certain point an individual goes from being a defender to an apologist. Roberta, sadly you have crossed that line.

There is no need to attack Roberta. You are way out of line. She is entitled to be supportive of Barry, as you are entitled to not be. You have already stated your opinion and you should leave it at that. !!!

It's clear the players want a U.S. Open, the fans want it and the Berhman's want to do it.

In my opinion, the ONLY way it's viable is to implement the financial safeguards they've outlined. If Shannon carries through with the money management as proposed, it will go light years toward restoring credibility to the event.

The concern is whether the event is financially viable at all. If the players get paid and the vendors don't, the issues are still alive. An escrow account for entry fees, a trust account for added monies and vendor payments and a publicly published bank credit line would go a long way toward restoring the event.

I have nothing but respect for Roberta

Press release on AZ homepage say it will be at the Marriott this year and all added money will be placed in escrow and entry fees as they come in I guess as a lot of players don't pay until close to tournament day. Full field entries comes to $128,000. Min. $50,000 added...max $72,000 depending on how many entries there are. Does it matter who hold the escrow? Sounds good on paper. Johnnyt

Is this the same place the 2012 US Open was held? If so, this place SUCKED. Beggars can't be choosers i guess.

No... this is the hotel next to the Convention Center (were it was for several years through 2011). Prior to the Convention Center it was held in this hotel before... I am pretty sure it was there in 92 or 93 timeframe..

Nice hotel... stayed there every year the Open was at the convention center..

I cant imagine that release would reassure anyone that the money will be there. One year he promised to have the money in cash on display behind glass with an armed guard. It never happened or anything close. I dont think he ever paid first place right away in the last 9-10 years. The winners have gotten installments but were always paid by the next event as far as i know.
