I learned that the hard way, remember my house ? duh? I threw a party once and got maybe 50 people, if I had that house in LA I could have had 2000 people easy(yes it was that big-JCIN knows this), point is I thought having that house I could over come the strip and that didnt work. a $60,000,000 (cost) house that's 11 minutes from Mandalay bay and I couldnt get 100 people over with a open bar for free. wow. I only lost $20,000,000 on that idea, well $30,000,000 cause I had to earn 30 to get the 20 afer tax's to blow on it, nice huh? one of the most expensive lessons of my life.
Sounds like one hell of a party though, :) I love cooking and that kitchen was awesome.

Vegas......

no i made about 100,000,000 there and lost 80 something % of it when the realestate market crashed and moved out, havent looked back.I hate Vegas, never did like it, but I made it work for me and I used it for what it was good for. I got a PHD in Vegas culture, gambling, the good old days of Vegas , a R/E Brokers license (now expired). I learned everything i could about it, Had monster inside juice with the City govt paid bribe $$$ oh yeah i'll talk now its been long enough ago that its ok, wont name names. I left unscathed except the $80+ million that evaporated -casino's didnt get a dollar of my $$$, thats for suckers.

Yeah i'm proud of what I did, I did the shit most people see in movies, I lived it, while the rest trade hours for dollars. I didnt bang the whores myself, dont like them, dont do dope, never tried it, dont hardly drink, either. I just used a city for what it offered when it offered it to my advantage, thats Hustlin real Hustlin, big $$$, movie type shit. andI lived it for 20 years, and now i'm real real comfortable. Went to jail once for 3 hours on a computer bug, thats the only beef I caught, didnt lose my freedom or asset seizure to the govt or anyone else. Why? cause I played by the rules. Paid all my taxes didnt cheat the IRS, or any henkey jive biz like that. Suckers cheatthe IRS ask Westly Snipes how that worked out for him. LOL

Vegas is a disease, its a infection, and there was a time it was the best place there was to make $$, problem now is its lost its edge, there is gaming everywhere, so that diluted its edge. So I left. I straight pimped it out, WITHOUT falling for it and the tragedy it creates, i watched more people lose their marriages, homes, life savings, sanity there than I care to think about, all behind those pretty flashy lights. See I'm not the sucker, I'm the guy that played the suckers.

pimps up hoes down,

and no I didnt pimp girls, too much drama for me, LOL

Good for them. I have to admit that I have a renewed interest in hoping that all their hard work is rewarded.

I originally posted that I didn't understand the game. After studying it a bit from the free videos, I started liking it.

After all the controversy, I pretty much said screw it. I don't believe that all the public going back and forth helped their cause any.

But, there is obviously some very dedicated people involved that are not going to give up on it just yet so I feel that it is the least I can do is try and buy a few and support their efforts as much as I can.

I will be looking forward to watching a few when time permits.

Good luck guys.

Typically, these kinds of promotions, where a large investment pool is needed, are generally arranged by a good front man with a solid business model supported by talented people. It is easier to get the necessary investors in the beginning because your are selling a concept based on projections. My concern would be whether the contingency fund that was set aside to get over any unforeseen start up bumps was large enough to see this through the problems that they obviously have had. Is the money invested now or during the next rounds (if) needed patient money?

The next round of investment money, if needed, will not be as easy to come by. That business model will now have some actual results to compare to the projections. Initial investors will have to put in more money or else see their positions greatly reduced. New money always is worth more, dollar for dollar, than old.

As a format BB has already shown a positive evolution from being difficult to follow (even for a pool fan like me) to being much more spectator friendly. I quite enjoyed the matches that are currently available on the web site and assume they are indicative of the latest evolution or close to it; very entertaining.

However, I find myself with some questions, among them;

Will we tire of watching after a period of time from the point of view of the sheer volume of content packed into a relatively short time frame? As it stands now I would not be a season pass subscriber for that reason.

Will we lose enthusiasm for watching this if teams resort to their alternate players every time there is a major schedule conflict?

On a positive note, will we see an influx of new and exciting players fill the opportunity to be competitive in those tournaments where a talent void is initially created when many of the name players are occupied by BB and will these new tournament stars affect the pool of sponsorship money that has mostly went to the current name players?

There have been many fair comments and points already posted and there is speculation and questions that will be answered in time. In the end, event promoters, room owners, media, players, fans and sponsors, while we all have an interest in growing this great sport we also have our own self interests so in the end it will resolve itself and the sport will survive.

BB is making a mistake NOT going after the US Open, put the money in escrow call it the BB Open and see who shows up.
Where do you think the players would go? To a tournament with money in escrow or one where they may not get paid - this does two things, it gives them a lot more exposure to the public and it also creates a relationship with the rest of the pros and top amateurs.
Along with 4 or 5 other Major BB tournaments throughout the year, scheduled around the BB season it would solve the problem of the Pros having to choose.
At some point they're gonna have to say WE ARE POOL and step on a few toes

Nathan,
I am confused what you mean by "its local, so it unavoidable". I really would like to know which of the BB players are planning on attending our event. As you know we have firm deadlines for players to sign up (the late fees kick in on June 3rd).

I would hate to see players missing the opportunity to play because there are no spots left - because they could not make up their minds to play or not.

It almost seems we are not getting 'fair' consideration because we are local - when in fact that should be the easiest for them to attend.

i strongly suggest the BB players let us know their intentions. We were planning on doing some 'special' things with some of the pro players and also getting them to support the juniors and their program.

It is getting harder and harder to plan with all of the unknowns out there.

But we will do what we have to do . . . . . . .

Mark Griffin

We asked the players which events they wished to attend, and scheduled around most of them (6 out of 10).

WEEK 8
Correct. It's local, so it's unavoidable.

WEEK 9
Correct. It's local, so it's unavoidable.

It's simple, leave them out if they don't sign up. Something like that needs to happen to them. I'm sure your field will field regardless. And then they will never let it happen again.

Actually I'd take 3/1 and wager right now with anyone that no one on the current bonus ball roster wins an event out of the 10 ball or one pocket at the July bcapl events. That is the current 48 players listed, you get em all.

They don't have the cream of the crop at BB, they got the tourney fillers. So don't sweat it Mr. Griffin, those guys need you more then you need them.

with all due respect to all pool industry "Biz men" I know from being a biz man myself in a number of industries(I have failed with more businesses than succeeded) pool appears to be about the toughest biz of them all. I was lucky and did Very good with a couple biz's that more than made up for multiple failures.

I hope and wish all of you the very best, its difficult. I know you guys personally and get along with you guys(to my knowledge). What ever the case I do respect the biz men in pool(who pay the players).

I'm sure it will work out in time, things tend to. the players will also have to make concessions and be flexible its just not on promoters. Like I said "A very difficult biz to be in". I gave it some thought and for now i'm passing. If I ever do decide to get into the "Pool Biz", I'm going to reach out to the industry guys and players before I'd make a move. I seen too many times problems like this and I believe a bit more communication between people is better. a ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure-if that exists in pool.

best of luck gentleman

Eric<-----not in the pool biz, now or for a VERY VERY long time.

If pool ever gets popular with the masses like video games, or Facebook I would love to have 20-30 "Fatboys" pool rooms scattered around LA, I'd have them standardized to a extent, but also customized to the local neighborhoods, the Latino rooms might have more 3C tables, the college area rooms-beer, big pockets on barbox's & cheap rates. etc. And then one or 2 players rooms for me and perhaps some Streaming like Hardtimes does. I'd be loving life with a chain of pool rooms, but i'm dreaming out loud. sorry

Back to BB and Co Nathan, Lenny etc I'm happy there is a plan and i'll be there in Vegas this July and fall(for some biz), so i will be supporting it.

ok i'm done rambling, bed time

If those guys are "tourney fillers" as you say - they would be crazy to risk losing their "guarantee" to play a tournament they have no chance of winning.
So why would they need him more than he needs them???

Nail. Head. You hit it. Margins suck in pool and rent is too damn high.

rents have caused pool time to go up to the point that pool aint a cheap date anymore. it used to be the least expensive entertainment, it was cheaper to go play for 3 hours than a movie when i was 18, i was broke-pool was the best fun for the least cash.

the reel estate boom has also harmed pool rooms, playing for the time nowadays you almost have to post the $ to play that game its so expensive.

pool in LA is $40-$60/session if your gambling for any length of time(you win $300 and $50 goes to time, thats a huge rake), do that 3-4 days a week and golf at Pebble Beach with Tiger looks like a bargain. in some markets this aint a issue, but LA it is and that's 20,000,000 people who get robbed everytime they play pool, and its the landlord not the room owner sticking up the players.

Your right they would be silly to give up the guarantee if its actually going. But they will. It's the same thing most of them do already, they have a regional tour event in their area, they are the favorite to win and make 800/1000 with no expenses. Or they could go to turning stone, SBE, or some other major and at best most of them have a shot at 5/6th maybe 7/8th with plenty of expenses. Bottom line they have never made wise decisions.

And when bonus ball folds, (if it ever gets going) Mark and the bcapl will still be standing strong, they will come crying back around the same way like they have for the past 20 years talking about I'm sorry we missed the event last time etc.

Or better yet they don't enter the event, then it fills up, then bonus ball does not start, it will be like turning stone, they will cry to get in, it's not fair, etc.

Just so everyone understands - I am not 'sweating it' as Jumping Joe says. I am just trying to get a feel for who is - or who isn't playing in our events.

We have told Junior players that they would be playing along side of the pro players. I dont want to mislead the junior players.

We had some special things planned for the junior and pro players.
What I hate to see is a golden opportunity squandered because of territorial crap. The BB players know they can play in our events and I hope they do. But our events have deadlines that will not be changed for players.

All of this conflict is BAD for pool. But there needs to be some respect shown. Lack of respect could cause some very long lasting problems for the professional level in this country.

This is not about someone needing the players or the players needing the event. This is about pool. As of right now, I do not know who is or who is not going to be playing in our events. We will be having the events and go about our business of providing the best product we can.

Does anyone remember the baseball players strike? Rash decisions can cause a LOT of backlash. The pool industry cannot afford that - but in all honesty, I can only react to what the players decide to do.

So - it is in their hands and I will react accordingly.
I am hoping that Nathan will respond as to who might be planning on attending our events. I am putting this in a public forum because I think others might also want to know.

With all due respect Mark, aren't pool players notorious for signing up for an event at the last possible minute, or even in person? Of course you know this, probably better than anyone in all of AZ.

You list your late fee date as June 3rd. I did not see your absolute cutoff date after that. Today its April 29th. You really expect all the players to be registered as of now, ESPECIALLY when they are all waiting to see how BB will pan out?

I think you are pissing into the wind here. None of the pros read AZ and are going to answer your question. Why don't you contact them and ask them if they are playing in your events?

I personally don't think the BB roster will affect major pro events much anyway. Some of the top top guys aren't in BB. The guys in BB except for Darren don't travel to international events (I might have missed a couple others). Some of the guys in it rarely travel to any tournament.

Iusedtoberich-

This is what Nathan posted in #143.

"Players have already told us which events they wish to attend, so we scheduled their teams off during most of those weeks. As such, very few of them will need to miss any matches."
If that is true, then I was asking him to provide that info to me

We try to plan ahead and all the additional info we can get helps us make a better event.

I do not expect players to sign up this early - but I am really trying to let them understand they are welcome, but our rules are for everyone. There will only be last minute sign-ups if the field has openings. I will do my best to fill the field.

I promote pool because I love the game.

We are about the only entity that does 'all skill level' events. I want the players to be successful and I want to have a good event.

It probably will not affect me that much. If the event goes real bad, I may have to discontinue having the events. Who knows? But this is a small industry. If someone sneezes, we all know it!

Mark Griffin

This should help.

Mark,

I am in charge of making the schedule for the WPBL. We are doing our best to work with the players wishes as far as scheduling around tournaments. We have even moved some days around and made some changes since the schedule was posted in this very thread by user "Bogus Ball" with their first post. Funny thing that the file was only given to yourself and the bonus ball players currently under contract.

It is simply not feasible to take complete weeks off during the season as we are already scheduled to finish the playoffs at the end of November. We plan to start season 2 in January so we are back onto a schedule with less conflicts with current events (as originally planned before the delays).

Team and CSI event(s) with no scheduling conflict

Atlanta- One Pocket and 10 ball
New York - 8 Ball
Chicago- one pocket, 10 ball and 8 ball
Houston- one pocket and 10 ball
Philadelphia- one pocket and 10 ball
Pittsburgh- one pocket 10 ball and 8 ball
Los Angeles- 8 Ball
Las Vegas- 8 Ball
Minnesota- 8 Ball
Miami- 8 Ball
Phoenix- one pocket and 10 ball
Toronto- 8 Ball

Here are the player rosters:

SOUTH DIVISION

Atlanta Scorpions: Johnny Archer, Dennis Hatch, Shannon Daulton
Miami Cruise: Corey Deuel, Hunter Lombardo, Jose Parica
Las Vegas Dice: John Schmidt, Charlie Williams, Mike Davis
Los Angeles Wave: Oscar Dominguez, Ernesto Dominguez, Louis Ulrich
Phoenix Fire: Scott Frost, Tommy Kennedy, Manny Chau
Houston Hustlers: Jeremy Jones, Chip Compton, Justin Hall

NORTH DIVISION

Toronto Blue Sharks: Jason Klatt, John Morra, Erik Hjorleifson
Philadelphia Aces: Darren Appleton, Stevie Moore, Brandon Shuff
Minnesota Outlawas: Thorsten Hohmann, Ralf Souquet, Jesse Engel
Chicago Rockets: Rodney Morris, Raj Hundal, Mika Immonen
Pittsburgh Poison: Shawn Putnam, Adam Smith, Sylver Ochoa
New York Pride: Earl Strickland, Larry Nevel, Warren Kiamco

This information should give you a pretty good idea of who will be attending which events.... however the players with conflicts will have the opportunity to use a spare. We will be collecting that information in the coming weeks.

Hope this helps.

I count 28 bonafide Champions here out of 36 players listed. And the other names are not that far under the rest.

Say whatever you want but when this thing kicks off then there will be real champions battling it out here. I think that this game is the real deal even if it looks goofy. I think what it comes down to is we will see some great play and some patterns and strategies that we haven't seen in other games. Should be interesting.
