Traveling pool players need Class C Motorhome.

Man, anyone ever hear of a truck stop??

Places, like a Flying J, etc have showers for rent. Food, overnite parking, some have laundries...

Eric >work smart, not hard

HA! No, never knew the truck stops had showers and food??? How the hell did i drive 10 round trips in the US, and never know that?

Joking of Coors!

I was in a truck stop at the beginning of a 40+ hour trip, dreading the ride.
I was trying to figure out something other then the radio to help kill the time.

Then it came to me, a CB! :D So standing in the truck stop, i was browsing something, i never in a million years thought i would buy.

I saw a long haul guy looking at CB stuff and decided to ask him what i should buy. To my shock, he told me what to buy, took me out in the parking lot, installed the whole system, and gave me some pointers how to use. Man, some truckers are just world class!

No doubt in my mind, i pissed allot of cb'ers off with my clueless proper use if the thing, but it sure did make the trip go by fast. That was around 94 or so....

My handle for that trip was,

"Who the ()K is this guy on a CB. That's what they were calling me anyway!" :D:D:D

Just out of curiosity, why didn't you make money? I was no champion but I always made plenty of money. I was on the east coast and ran around mostly in the south. I was always under the impression that the West coast was like a Garden of Eden back then)70's) for a pool player. Were you pretty much vacationing and just playing a little pool along the way, not really trying to make money?

Jim Matz had I think an Open Road camper. He showed me his set up and I loved it. He was a money making machine when he was no the road with that camper. He also sold cues along the way. I viewed it as a job and treated it that way. It was fun but making money was the real object.

Yep Mac I enjoyed the scenery along the way. The West Coast of the U.S. is gorgeous country and I explored everywhere I went. I would go off for a day or two into the parks and campgrounds and just hike around. When I got to a town I would look for the poolroom. That was my M.O. I probably played a couple of times a week. I don't remember losing too often, only Mike Zimmerman beat me on an 8' bar table in Washington.

a few years back

we did the math and after initial cost, up keep, gas miliage, and insurance, we found it cheaper to buy a 10 year old porsche, with 25 mpg, and stay in nicer motels !!!!!

Eric, you should see some of the really big truck stops in the USA.

They cater to the drivers and not a joke like the truck stops in Canada.

Anything from laundry to free movie theaters. And the food doesn't suck.

.

Terry,

I haven't been to a ton of em, but I've hit a few. The big chains like Flying J and T/A are pretty good. Pretty much everything that someone on the road needs. I've also been to big independent stops like one in Columbia, MO. Those could qualify as a blue collar resort! No chit.

I had a few road trips on bikes. We would hit truck stops for the major maintenance and use baby wipes+ soap at gas station bathrooms for the in-between cleanings. You can do a fair job with baby wipes+soap+toothbrush+deodorant.

Is pulling a pop-up worthy of consideration? Cheap, low maintenance, easier on gas, and you can unhitch and roll.

Cons: safety and having to set up each stop.

Thats what I was wondering.

I hate camping but always said if I ever did want to go that way I would check out the pop-up with an air conditioner on top.

Tough tho, to parallel park or get around in the city. Van is the most cost effective of all. If ya want a real good current cost vs the nut, call Dr. Cue, he finally went from a Chevy Asto van to a Hyundai Elantra. He and Marty travel probably the most miles per year by car on average than Any other pool player on the Planet. Massey was in the air Allot, and in his Bounder with Francinne for years, now he's into Enterprise rent a car. He came thru and visited this spring, then left to MS TN KS TX and back, In three months he'd put 21,000 miles on the Toyota, and had gotten new tires during that time. Mike tho sings and wears out the CD player on the road. I know he's headed to Argentina this coming Oct. for a show. He also saved someone a couple weeks back, he was excited.

I used to have one, would strap a Coleman fiberglass little bass boat on top. It was a blast. 2 people could pop it up in minutes. My barely used Palmino was @ $3500, had a bed on each end and the dining table turned into a third bed.

I suppose you can get a generator for a pop-up so you don't need a power hookup.

1000 mile trip RV Vs car

Car 25MPG 40 gallons @ 4.00 per gallon 160 to arrive

To stay 7 days in one location 45.00 (Generous) X7 nights 315.00

Food (cheap, bad for you in the LONG RUN) 20.00 a day x 7 140.00

Round it up to 620.00 a week

RV

1000 miles @ 10MPG 100 gallons 400.00
NO hotel fees
Food 40 a week (for one if you can shop) Eat 20 times better....

RV:

Room! Wanna add one more, for a month? No Prob. sleep in the convertible dinette.

Other driver can sleep GOOD, when his shift is over.

Watch TV, walk around to stretch legs. Spur of the moment change in plans, No prob. Just change directions.....
No need to worry about finding motels. No cheap motel riff raff!!!! <HUGE, if your staying in places around 40.00 a night!

Dog: Get a dog to guard the RV when your out. Car/motel Plus Dog.... forget it.
Party: Part of traveling is meeting people, place to invite folks to have a beer, etc etc....

Place to fix your own GOOD FOOD. Make pasta and sauce in bulk, freeze, eat a week on 15.00.....If money is low....
No bed bugs
No crack whores
No maids!
Played pool until 5 am? No jerk calling your phone every 10 mins telling you to check out.
I could go on and on...........

My math reads, over a one year period, it's about a push money wise......So why not have your own space, your own bathroom, your own bed, and space to move when your driving, etc etc

RV all the way IMHO...Only if its a extended trip. Only if the RV you buy is reliable. That's why in a big fan of Air streams and vintage diesel bus conversions. Once you put the upfront money into sorting them RIGHT, they will go for EVER, if you understand basic maintenance. Some will argue the gas engine/car is cheaper.....
Ask yourself how much work your going to do, to drive a gas engine non stop for 500,000?????

A vintage diesel with a major (done right) will take you down the road with very few issues, 300,000-500,000 miles.... that is a lot of towns.

Were you a traveling pool player/hustler? I have to tell you, you may roll into a town and not even know if you even want to stay there. You stick you head in a pool room at like 2 pm and find yourself still there at 2 am. All you want to do is hit a pillow for a few hours. The last thing you want is searching for a motel at 2 in the morning after leaving the pool room in a strange town with a check out time of 10 am. Playing pool on the road with an RV is the nuts.

Again, I am talking about a time when playing pool on the road was a pretty good job. I can't speak for today though, in fact, I could not imagine trying to do it today. Not as much about the expenses as times have just changed. Add to that the internet that is a knockers paradise. Heck someone would take your picture and post it on a forum like this, in fact I have seen them. Back then you could drive 20 miles and have a whole new crop of people to play. Not people with your picture on their cell phones who may look straight at you the moment you walk in.

Basic cheap pop ups can't hold the ceiling weight, and the integrity of the roof is easily compromised with all the bouncing on the freeway. The Heavier Duty ones work, but they cost more, and its nice to have power lifts, they can be a pain to crank up/down. The van tho, you can hide park between two other vehicles and no one notices or really cares as you blend in better.

Beside your Cue and Cue Case ... Just view a list of possible accessories you might be carrying or buying first time around just to go RVing. each person RVing List will be different as will the cost

http://www.marxrv.com/load.htm

How long will it take to recoup your money/investment on the RV.

Island Drive right about the Van.

Also some State Rest Stop allow overnight parking for RV , but 2hrs limit on car. Some Rest Stop have Dump site

Didn't Female Player Tammie Wesly [Sp?] and husand travel for a while in a class C?

Tam,
She was double smart, and could play....at times, like an Allison Fisher ''of the bar table''. Picked her spots ''always good''. In a large tournament, No Woman, enjoyed playing her in the early rounds.
She always showed up when ya least expected it, and same is true as the other way around.

Rest stops are a scary place to be unless you have some protection.

I would feel safer in a Wal Mart lot.
