The document of our pool related road trip across the U.S. updated daily

Rhea, you'd be wise to take some of this advice. That is...unless you and Gene are just creating drama for business purposes for Gene. If so, you're in the right place, good luck.

Rayjay is telling it like it is.

Roger

She should do what she wants to do. My advice about getting better was because she has a coach. That's all about playing.

Also I don't care about yours or others advice. Most of what I saw was along the lines of give it up, you suck, will never succeed.... Etc...that sort of advice isn't very useful as far as I see it. Let's just chalk it up to different views on life. I have mine you have yours and life goes on despite us not having the same outlook.

So unless we are telling her to go for it, we are giving negative advice. What dream is she following ? The one where a part time McDonald's employee makes more then Earl a year. You seem to be the only one who thinks they're giving her good advice. How long ago was it John that you went on the road ? I have a feeling you have no idea what it's like out there now.

This isn't 25 years ago where people of all speeds gamble all the time. No this is the era of out running the nuts just to make a little change.
You have to make 200 a day minimum just to cover the nut. Do you think her races to 5 for 10 $ is gonna cut it ? You act like we're debbie downers cause we give her advice on reality. And as a father of a daughter I will encourage her to follow her dreams but I would kick her a$$ if she ever tried to be a road player.

Oh, you're bringing logic and experience into this....? That sort of grounded advice has no place in Candy Land where every crap C player should go hit the road with no car, phone, skill, and little money. If you don't believe that, then you're a negative debbie downer

Time

I watched Rhea play at Black Bear Casino, she has some skills but needs more table time. If Gene is taking a break its the perfect time for Rhea to put 10 hours a day in and play play on the 9ft Gene set up. Playing on a 9ft an all tournaments in the strong pool player region of WI and MN will help her game more than trying to drive the van by herself.
I watched SVB game skyrocket but he put in his time practicing 8 to 12 hours a day to make him the player he is today. Its tough to put in that practice time on the road, seems like a perfect time for Gene to rest and get his drive back and for his student to put in her time on the table.
Good luck to both of you and it was good seeing you again Gene.

Once again the "road" some of you think you're talking about is not the one Rhea is on. Not even close. Rhea won't get far on the one you are thinking of because reality prevents it. But if she wants to chase her dream in a way that is way tougher then let her.

But honestly I doubt very few here have been on the one she is on.

Not a do as I say not as I did kind of person. Forge your own path get your own experiences. You might end up someplace completely different than where you wanted to go and better off for it.

Probably not and most of us can see the error that is about to be committed.

I didn't gamble on the pool table, I gambled with my life 40 times a day.

When you got hurt, the show left you in the hospital in a strange city to fend for yourself.

The Show Must Go On. Thats the Showman's Creed.

And I owned a home, someone was always living there and I sent the mortgage and bill money home every month.

My security was no further than the cost of a Grey Hound bus ticket.

Why don't you lot use the term "mate"? It's great, can be used for anyone - friend or foe alike - and you never have to learn anyone's name.

Here in Los Angeles the word is primarily used to describe a spouse, whether you or they are a he or she.

Rhea, if you get some extra time, could you tell us a little of your past life? Where were you raised and by whom? About your interest in pool and the experiences that shaped you.

Chris, where I grew up, Mate was something that was constantly on your mind, 24/7 starting at about the age of 18 and up.

Its kind of like an addiction also. One of those extra curricular activities that occupied your mind over work, sports etc. Then, one would get married, the addiction would continue, but your Mate, would gently wean you off of the addiction.

This would last until the age of approx 50, when you decided to take up pool again full time.

So, when I hear English males refer to each other as Blokes, thats fine but when they refer to each other as Mates, it can make ones sphincter muscle buckle a bit.

Chris,

She went into pretty good detail in one of the two threads two, maybe three, weeks ago..... I'll let you have fun searching for it. Lol

we're not stopping her, and you don't know the roads any of us have been on to be perfectly honest....we all forged our own path at some time, and during those times, good advice went a long way.

So warn her. That's the whole point of experience. You use yours the way you want to and I use mine the way I want to.

Rhea does not have a home though according to her. There is no nest to fly back to. Which means she has to make her way wherever she goes. That's a far different path than some one who goes out with a place to come back to.

So I stand by my statement that very few on this forum have been there.

And you're correct because 99% of us would allow common sense to dictate that this is not a good move.

and Rhea admitted to being a very bad addict. I would say that a large percentage of addicts eventually fall of the wagon at least once or twice before they finally recover.

Rhea used the analogy of getting herself to the point of only gambling at pool and nothing else.

Thats like me saying that I don't smoke cocaine any longer, just blow it up my nose.

Rhea seems like a nice girl. Shes never lashed back at any of us for our supposed negative comments made. Maybe that is why we are trying to continue
to get her to change her mind.

Of the many nice presents I got back from my wife's journey to the outer limits of a Black Friday sale in Minneapolis, one is a can of Easy Cheese. Cheese in a spray can. I'm sitting here making little designs on small crackers and washing them down with ice cold beer.

As with many of us, when Rhea walks out the door of Gene's Mother's home to start her journey, we will be onto something else on the board within 15 minutes. Rhea will be a distant memory and I will be still sitting here making little cheese designs on crackers and drinking beer.

Life goes on, with or without ya.

When I was 15 I got into it with my dad and ran away from home. I had $12. I went into an open garage and took a sleeping bag, snuck into a boat and spent the night there, hitch hiked 80 miles to Santa Barbara and was building a fire on a beach to cook some hot dogs. It was a tourist area and a man in his 20's came up and struck up a conversation with me. He wanted to know why I was cooking food on the beach. I told him what happened. We talked for a good 20 minutes and he finally talked me, in a very nice way, into going home. I don't think he intended on leaving me until I agreed to go home.

To this day I think of this young guy and wonder why he came up to me and why he cared if I went home. I still consider it some of the best advice I have ever had. He was a complete stranger but it was obvious he cared about doing the right thing. I am extremely grateful to this day that he did talk me into it. I would love to find him and let him know that, but I know it will never happen. Thanks to his advice, I returned home and all was well.

Rhea, you may not have this option, but you definitely have marketable skills. Make the right decision so that you may look back and thank yourself one day.

The funny thing is I have been exactly where she is I just played better. I had no home to go to or anyone to take care of me and I thought the road was the answer. So my advice is based on the fact that I know this 50k a year job is way better then the other path I was on.

Be careful acting like you know what people have been through. Most people wouldn't of made it a week in my shoes at the time.

Oh does she have a 50k job now? Forgive me I missed that.

The road was the answer for you at that time. You did what you wanted until you decided to go another direction and are here to tell us about it.

See it all worked out.
