Earl is a disgrace!

If it looks like a troll, waddles like a troll, and quacks like a troll, it's a troll.

That would be a duck bob. This is a troll.

Your basic problem may be that you just have an ego so big that you need a wheelbarrow to carry it around with you but, in any case, best of luck coping with your Bob Dixon condition.

Are you sure you "charge" people for your advice.
My Bob Dicksin condition.:rotflmao:

Earl has the flamboyance and charisma to draw people to pool. He's a total character, but that draws attention to the sport and gets people playing...... Earl may be in a funk, but I'll take him over any of the Europeans <--Earl has been in a 'funk for 30 yrs. !.. I am 100% pro-American, but I would gladly trade him for ANY European player to represent the U.S...He is the epitome of the 'Ugly American' !

If flamboyant means 'LOUD', and charismatic means 'OBNOXIOUS'..Yes, Earl is definitely our man !.. It is amazing that any sane person, would want Mr. Strickland to represent pool for our country !..He has probably 'turned off' more casual viewers, than all other players combined ! (on both sides of the pond)..Yes, lets keep putting him front and center...Its really worked well so far, hasn't it ? :sorry:

Bingo.

All this BS talk about how Earl is "mentally ill" (whatever that is) and can't help himself is laughable. If Earl's problems center around his meds and his DSM-V diagnosis, then how is it that he can turn it on and off like a switch when he wants to?

Who are the real psychiatrists on this forum anyway? Who knows beyond all doubt that he is actually bi-polar in the first place? That is a tough diagnosis even for a trained medical practitioner, never mind some keyboard shrink who think's every mood swing demands anti-psychotic drugs.

FWIW I'm married to a clinical psychologist with 15 years experience, including a stint at the Capital District Psychiatric Center in Albany, NY. She see nothing remotely like Bi-polar I, Bi-polar II, or the related diagnosis Cyclothymia that would be responsible for Earl's antics. Bi-polar swings are huge, long lasting (weeks at a time), and a patient cannot just pull their shit together and behave when it suits their needs.

Earl likely suffers from any of several personality disorders, lumped in together in the older DSM-IV as "Axis II" disorders. Most Axis II disorders are controlled poorly or not at all with medications, so there goes the old "Earl's off his meds and can't help it" excuse. Cognitive therapy is the best course of action with personality disorders, but the success rate is rather low. It has to start with the patient wanting to change. Typical for these disorders, Earl wants the world to change (even the game itself) to meet his needs, instead of adapting to the ever changing environment that is life.

bump.........

Does anyone on this board actually think Earl gives a flip if he is liked or not?

Me thinks not.

I wouldn't walk across the street to see him play, but I bet the promoters were glad he was there.

Being married to and being a clinical psychologist are not the same... Unless you wife wants to jump on here I would just as well have you say I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Or oooh look I googled....

Chris, why would you put the gentleman down, for making such an accurate observation ? ..Be it google, wife, or hearsay...he makes more sense than ANY 'Earl-Lover' ever did ! (this includes the 2 or 3 'Pearl Dangler's', who can actually form words and thoughts, and put them in a sentence :embarrassed2:)

Dick

PS..I am NOT an 'Earl-Lover', but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night ! (what does that count for ?)

I am not saying Earl is mentally ill but the notion that he can temporarilly control himself when threatened is proof that he can behave that way always is absurd. It is as absurd as if I were to look at the fact that I can hold my breath as proof that I don't have to breath.

I will say this for Earl, he's consistent, going off like a rocket wherever he plays. ;)
Sadly, as his game declines he is only getting worse. Earl lives, eats and breathes pool and it must be very frustrating for him to be on the downward spiral of his career. He will still play a beautiful rack from time to time, but his game is plagued by too many missed balls, something the old Earl rarely did - MISS!

He works out like a fool, running miles every day and is in great physical condition for a 52 year old man. Too bad he can't find a workout to cure his mental instability.

Meanwhile this is post #276, testament to his relevance in the pool world. I suspect all his meltdowns will get significant air time on Fox Sports. That's the nature of television today, to show the unglamorous side of all sports. And life in general for that matter. It was heartwarming for me to see all the coverage given to Nelson Mandela for a life well lived! Sadly there isn't much good news to report in the media, mostly we see only the ugly side of Man. :o

Really I'm the idiot because I expect our professional players to act like professionals? Showing class and respect is not too much to ask of someone who is getting paid to play win or lose. Shane and Johnny are the only 2 that showed pure class the entire event for the American team. It is hard to debate with someone who thinks ignorance is cool so no need for me to respond to you again.

NO ONE WANTS TO SEE IT lol If you think people want to just watch balls go in a hole then yes ..your ignorant. They don't...your going to have to bring a different element to the show if you want people to watch it and the only way our pro players are going to make any money is if you can get it on tv and people turn it on. I love this game.. been playing it for 25 years and you are not going to get people to watch this game in large numbers if you don't add a lot of Earl strickland like players. btw how often are pool players played to win or lose? The mosconi cup is by far the exception rather then the rule. This isn't football , baseball or basketball where if you have a bad day you still get paid. In pool you have a bad day and you don't eat. As Earl said in pool your paid to perform not to just show up and play.

I agree with you.

However, if Tiger acted the way Earl just did, do you think Nike would stick around? Do you think the endorsements and clothing lines would be there if "the best players" in the game behaved the way Earl just did? I sure don't think so.

Tiger does act like that..he's always slamming his clubs down...cursing..having his caddy throw cameras in ponds lol His sponsors don't give a shit as long as the stuff his name on sells.

Idiot? Just because he has a differing opinion?

Roger

maybe idiot was a strong word... ignorant would fit for people who think this is the early 19th century where you can have guys in suits quietly playing pool and people will show up to watch. If that's what you want then you also want his game to continue to die. The fact that people think pool is some kind of noble honorable game while at the same time we celebrate the hustlers and low life gamblers of its history is a joke.

Regardless of his behavior, I've never seen Earl play so timid. He was not his usual Earl self on the table.

I agree..when he played a safe with ball in hand and the table open on the last day I was stunned.

Of course it's proof. There's more proof, too. Watch his eyes just as he's about to go off. There's a moment of absolute clarity there. His intent is clearly to shark his opponent. He's been doing it for decades. Another player who was a master at it was Jimmy Mataya. These guys missed their calling. They would have been great actors. Earl eventually started to believe his own line of crap. Now he's deluded.

Denver Open, early eighties on Gold Crowns, during Sigels hey day. I'm watching the Pearl play Chewy Rivera, at times one of the Great players outta Denver, and two time BCA 8 Ball singles winner. He's got Earl on the ropes and Earl is seated at the head of table cue in hand. Chewy is at the foot of the table eyeing' a long shot into the upper corner pocket at the head of the table. Earl is in direct line of the shot....as Chewy gets down to pull the trigger, Earl uncorks his cue, intentionally to distract Rivera, it worked. After that it became a Rule Nationwide, it means you conceded the game.

I played him four sets, in Long Beach Cal. late 70's, races to 11 rollout 9 ball, he was passing thru Los Angeles with Monroe Brock and another. Four sets later they left Paramount Billiards on Long Beach Blvd. Adam Brostoski's pool room. Adam is the father of current and beginning owner of Golden West Pool Tables. On Earls way out the door I said to him....if you ever learn to follow your ball you'll be a great player. He never said a negative word, acted like a gentleman. Fast forward to Denver not that many years later, and the uncorking was beginning to bubble out. He never got better with time after that. I look at his mentors....As a father, that speaks loudly, and SCREAMS ever louder these days in his public eye, something even FATS is his eighties would NEVER do he tho took it home, and caused the Evelyn/Rudolph inevitable split. This now may be the fracture of he/with the public, a divorce that will decimate him, we ALL need to tell em, STOP....it may save him, his decline is before us, pretty sad. We have ALLOT of collateral damage in our sport.

I think Earl is finished as a Mosconi cup player...

Ya think? Have you met him in person? He is a crazy has been. Classic example of what happens to folks why rely on this _game_ as their sole source of income. I used to hate him, but believe it or not he isn't a difficult person to get to know and like away from the table. He's a lot of fun. Too bad he has nothing outside of pool. It's a shame. I won't hold it against him, he just so desperately wants to win that it negatively effects him when he doesn't. Welcome to the game of "Professional Pool".

Reality bites...

I wouldn't label this as reality at all. Nope.

Does Earl warrant this kind of criticism? In some respects, yes. He did have poor behavior at this year's Mosconi Cup, and he does have a track record of tableside antics, but a lot of these hate-filled words I am currently seeing on this thread read vindictiveness and jealousy to my eyes.

When "The Strickland Story" came out, there was nothing but flowers and buttleflies floating around on these forum threads, but the haters have come out and want to pummel Earl Strickland to death with words laden with vicious verbal attacks.

How far will can it go? What else can be said?
